Recently, I read a Twitter post from a woman who wasn’t sure if it was acceptable for a woman over a certain age (30) to wear shorts.

Where do we get these ideas?

You tell me & I’ll tell you where to get great shorts.

We’re moving past the obvious (although a great denim short is a key piece, imo), & introducing lengths, cuts, & patterns that make all sorts of statements.

None of which are “you’ve aged out of shorts”.

SUMMER SPORT

With the Paris Olympics under way (a full fashion showcase in & of itself) & the US Open around the corner - it’s hard not to have athletic wear on the brain.

I don’t mean jerseys or tracksuits by the way, I mean summer sports. I mean vintage men’s tops like Kramer wears. I mean convertible shirt dresses, & swimwear as clothing, & tennis inspired pieces like the shorts you see pictured here.

Pieces that work for a run on the beach & drinks after. For surf lessons preceding a long lunch. For the cardio, ceremony, & stress relief that is dancing at a day or night summer beach party.

This is set to be a three part post. As I’m taking my summer shop keeping seriously - it feels necessary to source & style looks from various retailers & designers for the most well rounded selection of summer sports style.

Social media or shop?

I’m being a little meta & doing it out-loud. Because I’m using this space now to document inspiration. To speak to people who may or may not speak back. &, of course, to pull some pieces together that might turn into a look.

Your look.

Everything here is pulled from Fleur du Mal. The New York location houses not only an impeccable collection of lingerie, but a small gallery as well. Recently I came across a price list for the photographic fine art of Abbey Drucker - discovered no place else but that very gallery inside of the lingerie boutique.

Abbey Drucker, fine-art photographer, studied at SVA - & then in the studio of German model & photographer Ellen Von Unwerth.

Unwerth, if you didn’t know, is also the living vision board for Schitt’s Creek character Moira Rose.

Drucker has worked for Condé Nast in commercial photography for years now. Her work has appeared in publications including, but not limited to W, & Vogue Italia.

On Dec 12th of last year, an exhibition of Drucker’s fine art - a photographic series titled Night Sessions - opened at Peep Show Gallery inside of Fleur du Mal.

A seamless merging… that particular space, these particular photographs, comes from a core focus on “…illuminating the fluidity of womanhood & human connection” in the artist’s practice.

Where better to exhibit the art of a woman capturing women in a way that explores psychological states through physicality?

Where better than a gallery that takes the form of a back room in a lingerie boutique?

Inspired by An American Icon: the Collection of Joan Didion (pt. 1)

Joan Didion loved Tulum, & her Celine sunglasses, & good times with good people.

Months ago I visited the land she loved. I discovered independent brands like Umbral. I ate, & danced, & felt, & wrote.

Months later, eager estate-sale goers purchased an array of Didion's personal items at STAIR Galleries. Auctioned to benefit the funding of girls’ scholarships. Some perhaps sourced in the city housed in the state the writer would name her daughter after & make (one of) her homes in.

The items below are inspired by STAIR’s listings of items such as
carved mahogany ladderback armchairs, an unattributed painting titled Persian School: Woman With a Fan, decanters, a simple Baccarat ice bucket, assorted colored glass articles, & Robert Grahm’s ‘moca torso’ sculpture.

Discovered at Saatchi’s The Other Art Fair, Bailey Consta’s works of watercolor on paper are a deeply saturated, varied landscape of figurative paintings, abstractions that are sometimes landscapes, & the occasional photograph.

There is a sense of cohesion in the variety. A signature aesthetic present in these works that are, for the artist, a way of healing self & land.

Excellent additions to existing collections as well as perfect gifts for him, her, & you, the Saatchi sourced works featured here, including ‘transport’, pictured as the cover photo, are personal favorites.

Works that you can purchase directly from the artist, & that stand out to me as truly evocative - include Two Souls at Sunset, Wanderer, Becoming More Like the Land, Oceanic Lift, & Vague.

Consta’s pieces are viewable at galleries in both NYC & Pakistan. Private collectors live in places like Berlin, Albuquerque, Colorado, & maybe sometime soon,

your city.

Christy Powers’ portraiture stood out at my last visit to the Other Art Fair in Brooklyn - which I approximate happened in 2021.

Her works are impressionist, documentarian, & contemporary. They echo the inspiration of a NY born artist & are an extension of a practice honed at Sarah Lawrence & the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Whales - exhibited in spaces including the Queen Victoria Museum, Kudos Gallery, & the Bronx Museum.

The selection of one of a kind works below, created with acrylic, ink, & gauche on wood mounted Yupo paper, were painted during the earliest days of the pandemic for the Artist Support Pledge.

They are “Icon” paintings. & I too have felt inspired by the portrayed figures.

Stabilization of physiological processes & promotion of homeostasis are the proposed benefits of adaptogens - the herbal complex found in various mushrooms that is a current fascination in health, beauty, & wellness spaces (according to the Annual Review of Pharmacology.)

While this trend is running concurrently with renewed interest & study of psychedelic plant medicines including psilocybin - it is important to differentiate the benefits & uses of each type of mushroom instead of trying to capitalize on a craze.
