More photos on IG! My friend and her family have been through more than I can imagine the past four years. They just moved into this very special family home, but it needed some work. It is perfectly fitting that the first room done in the house is for their daughter! I love that we were able to help her feel settled after the move with a beautiful room with special things and toys just for her. The floral and gingham curtains are so fun and pretty and girly, and super functional too. Corner windows are tricky… We didn’t block much of this one and gave both walls symmetrical curtains! And the curtain on the closet is so much easier for the 5-year-old to open than the doors were! We did an affordable 100% cotton scalloped quilt set, and solid wood nightstands that are great storage and have USB charging. We mixed in quite a few heirlooms and vintage pieces, perfect for this home that’s been in my friend’s family for years. Plus, added a bulletin board for new treasures and photos! My wonderful friend and her family have been through more than I can imagine the past several years and have recently moved into what was her grandparents’ home. She’s doing an amazing job creating a beautiful, comfortable home for her family but I wanted to help with her daughter’s room. This sweet and very spunky five-year-old girl has been through months of the most intensive chemo, radiation, and two bone marrow transplants and is now healthy and vibrant.

I knew the perfect source for curtains for her room: @threegirlscurtains has so many pretty florals and patterned fabric options for their curtains, and we were able to customize the size and header style, etc. Corner windows like this are often funky to dress, and you typically don’t want to cover any of the window with the curtains are open, but it was unavoidable here… But I think it turned out great! (These are the Lily Vine Floral curtain.) We also tied in the pink with an adorable gingham curtain (the Scottish Gingham) also from @threegirlscurtains on the closet. Their curtains come pre-washed and I chose trained for the pleated ones!

We found these cute solid wood nightstands in a great narrow size from @stosense_home. They have USB plugs and came fully assembled, huge plus!!

My friend’s home is full of vintage pieces and family heirlooms and this room is no different, like this painted box that was her grandma’s and this wool rug that was in her grandma’s attic bedroom when she was a little girl in Idaho. I love how we mixed girly touches, vintage, and clean, fresh modern sensibility in here.

It is perfect that this is the first room in the house to be finished, this little girl deserves her own space that’s ready for her so much!

Last week I finally got the blog post up with all the basement sources. It’s a little more comprehensive than this, but here’s a cheat sheet!

When it’s not mentioned, you guessed it… Vintage or thrifted. Some of the art I painted myself and the frames around the TV are my dad‘s Intel awards and Air Force certificate that used to hang in his basement before he passed. There’s sentimentality all over this basement actually. I love that it’s a fabulous play place for my kids, as well as a workspace and peaceful hangout for us.

Been a long time coming… Not only is the basement renovation completely done, now I’ve styled it too 😂 We now have two guestroom spaces, a TV room/workout area that we use multiple times a week, the land of Barbie houses, Christmas and future baby storage, tools and overflow paper towels, etc., plus, of course the laundry room and full bathroom. And just this week, we added an extra fun function to the TV room: a beverage fridge and wine storage!

I just shared a blog post with all the details of the basement reno, including cost of the full renovation, and all the sources.

I am shocked at what we were able to do in this playroom! My friend and I have been making over her playroom with new rug and furniture, etc. We swapped out the boob light fixture, hung a gallery wall including some kid art… but the room was feeling bare until we hung the right window coverings. We swapped out the builder basic blinds with some bamboo Roman shades and added these really cool embroidered curtains from Twopages. (Don't forget the little metal hooks that go on the ends of pleated curtains.)

Super cool feature of the Roman shades: this window is so tall we definitely needed motorized in here because it's hard to reach! The remote control makes them go up and down easily.

I’m helping my friend turn this extra room into a playroom/reading room, and the new Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines x Loloi collection of rugs and throw pillows has some amazing pieces that are perfect for a cozy mom- and kid-friendly space.

I love that this striped and floral rug is a long lasting premium 100% wool, and the pillows are such beautiful blue colors. The rest of the collection has some great fall colors, too!

We have great plans for the rest of the room, including some window treatments and a gallery wall featuring some kid art, should be very fun and playful, but still beautiful and cozy.

Actually can’t believe how excited I am about these Halloween decorations! I don’t normally do much for Halloween because I don’t like anything gross or scary, or too heavy on the orange… Really rules out a lot of the options. But the kids love it! I think my favorites are the mini ghost string lights in front of the house! I found all of these non-tacky pieces at @birchlane.

Also, please don’t tell me it’s too early for Halloween decorations… I’m just proud. I’m doing them this year!

Earlier this year I started setting the table with a pretty table setting, even just for a Friday afternoon snack or Saturday lunch with the kids. It was for me really, trying to make everyday life prettier, but it turns out the kids love it! “Fancy lunch,” Lucy calls it.

I haven’t had any tablecloths for this table yet, but I found this beautiful imported cotton block print seller that makes them in every size and shape, isn’t this one perfect in here?!

P.S. Have you tried drying your hydrangeas yet? My favorite method is to put them in a vase with 1 to 2 inches of water and just wait till it evaporates. You can honestly keep dried hydrangeas for years, although I tend to replace them every year at this time!

It was so bad for years!! I had given up until I realized 1) we were getting married here and inviting tens of friends and family to potentially walk through the garage and 2) it’s ok to spend some money when you don’t have time (or health/energy) for the hard DIY stuff right now.

We had it painted the same white as the rest of the white spaces in the house (Sherwin Williams Alabaster), made a huge difference right away. Then we had the floor epoxied, which was a slow multi-step process involving a lot of buffing, but it turned out amazing! Then we put back the essentials and one shelf instead of the mess of plastic ones from before (we moved most of the tools to the basement).

Finally, I hung the simplest hooks ever to organize some of our tools and suddenly, we have a clean, fresh, relatively organized garage of practical tools, kids' toys, bikes, gardening stuff, and even room to park my car (although just barely).

I'm so happy we finally did this project, spent some money, and made a big difference! Let me know your questions about this project below and maybe I'll do another post or a blog post answering them!

Been loving a fancy lunch lately, but I still like to keep things simple. These three tips will elevate even a super simple table setting!
1. Tablecloth! I love slightly relaxed 100% cotton ones, they look good even without attention on the ironing board. This one is an Indian import from a very affordable shop!
2. Use multiple dish sets—mismatch the salad plate and the dinner plate. Here I used my everyday white plates plus some antique salad plates from a partial set I have.
3. Add interest and asymmetry with two vases instead of just one in the middle! Works great on a rectangular table, also adds drama here on round table.

I’m pretty sure my mom never mastered cutting watermelon because she always said it was a pain and we didn’t have it much. But I’ve always loved it! Everything changed for me when I learned this method. 😂 The kids still want to eat it off the rind so I cut the other half in slices for them, but this is how I like it! So easy too.

I had to buy this $12 knife for a project earlier this year and Micah and I were both completely floored by it… He has a really fancy one, but this one is still better. I cannot believe what Quince charges for this luggage. This is a large hard shell bag for $220 (!). It expands, it has built-in TSA lock, and the inside has nice organization. I've also been using their packing cubes because I like one big bag for everybody's stuff and this way I can keep it organized.

My living room is my favorite room in my home! I recently did a blog post with sources for every single thing and my house, all the rooms, and since I get the most questions about my living room, thought I would share these here.

Where there’s no label, it’s probably vintage! I have several vintage Ethan Allen lamps and other things in here, some art I had inherited from my grandma, and gold frame vintage mirrors, of course. Plus, lots of silver frames of family photos.

I’ve decided I want to start entertaining more, but it turns out it’s inspired the kids too enjoy fancier meals at home too. Lucy asked for a “tea party lunch” the other day and I knew it would take a little extra set up so I got things ready early. The kids loved it. I was never sure about that saying that you dress the way you shop for your closet… But I figure out it’s true for the principles, if not the colors. I always want high-quality natural materials as the foundation, some layering, and fun accent pieces… For an outfit it’s a necklace or earrings, for my home it’s the vintage 1960s fruit sculpture lamp I recently found in an antique store…

I had basically given up on finding a rug that was the right size for this room, but there are great custom options now! A rug that’s the right size, filling the room under at least the front legs of all the furniture, especially in a high-quality natural fiber like wool, makes a space feel so much more comfortable and luxurious.

Lucy’s room was already adorable but the new rug, a more functional and pink-trimmed Roman shade, and some art updates made it feel even nicer. And some additional toys and dolls made it feel more like hers. 💕

Still not over this 90s nostalgia tea party I threw with my friends and our daughters. I found this farm tea set I evidently got for Christmas in 1994 and my parents had held on to… what a great way to enjoy it! Chatting with my girlfriends while our daughters played happily in their dresses and helped pick out their bow colors… What a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
