And now it’s time to kiss the holidays goodbye! 😘💕👋🏻 Ames and Joules did SUCH a great job hanging in there while we spent the past 2 days visiting both sides of our families (including grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, great uncles, cousin, etc). It was definitely the first Christmas that the twins seemed to really understand what was happening—which made it so enjoyable for all of us! When they opened up gifts, their smiles, squeals, and constant requests to “Open! Open!” each toy’s packaging let us know they were excited and having fun. ☺️ Now that these two have a new treasure chest of toys to go through, we plan to spend the day relaxing and playing at home today! Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday with loved ones. 🥰

This room has always been a happy room to me. When we found out we were pregnant with twins, I knew exactly which room in our house would be theirs—the one with all the airy light! ✨☀️This room faces the West so in the afternoons the sun shines in there and brightens it up. I sat in this room in this chair when I was very pregnant with back pain. I rocked the twins in this chair when they were newborns. And as they’ve grown, Ames and Joules like to sit in this chair together. These are the simple things that make me happy! My favorite people in my favorite chair in my favorite room. It’s finally time to share this post! When the pediatrician told me in February that Joules was farsighted in her right eye and that she would need to be seen by an ophthalmologist, I was in complete denial. I remember telling myself that the doctor’s assessment was probably just off and that the eye doctor would tell us that everything was okay. Joules had always acted like she could see perfectly! Well, I was wrong.

We took Joules to the ophthalmologist where they confirmed something was wrong with her right eye. We then took her to get a second opinion where they again confirmed something was wrong. She is farsighted with accommodative esotropia in her right eye. This essentially means that she has trouble seeing close up and her right eye is slightly misaligned inward sometimes.

The good news is that we caught this extremely early! The earlier you catch something like this, the better the outcome. The other news is that she has to patch her good eye for 2 hours daily (to strengthen her weak eye) and wear glasses the rest of the time each day. Let me tell you how “fun” it is trying to get a 1.5-year-old to stop ripping off her eye patch and glasses every 5 seconds. 🤪 She will likely have to wear glasses for the next 7 years – until she’s old enough to wear contacts.

Let me be clear that there is NOTHING wrong with wearing glasses! I actually wear contacts/glasses myself! The apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree.🍎 And I think Joules looks just as beautiful with her new accessory!! I think I was just in denial because, as parents, we never wish for our kids to have ANY hurdles in life. In the end, though, this won’t really matter and I love her JUST the same. 💜

I’m sharing this now because this past week was the FIRST time we could get Joules to wear her glasses for more than a few seconds! 🎉

When Ames first saw Joules in her glasses, he ran into the playroom, grabbed a pair of sunglasses, put them on, and ran back to her. In essence, Joules has support from her twin, the rest of her family, and hopefully you!

Do you ever worry about your baby’s head shape? I did. When the twins were ~4 months old, I was concerned about the back of Ames’s head being flat.

Plagiocephaly is what we call it in the medical world. Basically, it’s a flat spot on the skull that develops in nearly 50% of infants. Babies skulls are soft, and normal surfaces they rest on can be just firm enough to lead to some misshaping.

The good news is that it’s preventable and reversible if caught early. Ames’s head is now perfectly round and we were able to reverse his issue in a matter of just a few weeks!

A few reasons why we see plagiocephaly a good bit in multiples:
1)Lack of womb space can lead to distortion of the head.
2)It can be hard to keep twins constantly repositioned, especially when they’re newborns or young infants that can’t crawl/walk yet.
3)The “Back is Best” sleep campaign to reduce SIDS we’ve all heard about from our pediatricians encourages parents to keep infants sleeping on their backs. While I fully support the idea, it inevitably forces babies to spend more time pressing their skulls against surfaces.

So...keep them moving when they’re awake! Reposition those babies as often as you can, such as supervised tummy time!! But also remember: if it does happen, it’s not your fault. I was incredibly diligent with my twins, but it still happened.

In my son’s case, we also bought a special head-shaping memory foam pillow that Ames slept on every day. Within 3-4 weeks of consistent use (from 4-5 months old), his head was 100% back to normal. Had it been worse, the next step would have been to put him in a shaping helmet. Luckily, we were able to avoid that completely.

I just wanted to share this post to spread some awareness to the issue as it’s fairly common in twins and multiples. I would love to hear if anyone else went through a similar experience. Did your babies ever have flat spots?

How are Ames and Joules already 13 months old today?! While there are so many awesome perks to them getting older, it makes getting out of the house a LOT easier. I am so happy to be back with these twins today!! After being with their Dad while I worked this past weekend, the FIRST thing they both showed me this morning was how they learned to give high fives while I was away! So that they have another new trick to show their Dad when he gets home tonight, I then taught Joules and Ames how to use a straw for the first time...but it wasn’t the normal kind! 🙌🏻 After the whole “banning plastic straws” movement, we recently added some @healthyhumanlife stainless steel straws and water bottles to our kitchen collection. Most pediatric experts recommend that parents start sleep training their kids (or in our case, twins) at 4-6 months of age. But do you know WHY they say to wait until then to sleep train? By 4-6 months, infants have probably reached a few important milestones including:
1) they can self-soothe
2) they’ve developed some sort of regular sleep-wake cycle
3) they’ve probably dropped most if not all of their night feedings
4) they likely weigh enough to go all night without feeds (i.e. at least 12-13 pounds). Yesterday, I took a poll about what twin parents wanted to hear about and several people responded with sleep training.
