A DIY paint job can look just as good as a professional one... the difference is usually just the tools.

I’ve been painting for over 20 years (my college job was painting the exterior of condos!) and in my current house I’ve tackled walls, trim, ceilings, cabinets, you name it. The number one thing I see people get wrong isn’t their technique, it’s that they’re doing every single job with the same basic brush.

Here’s my roster and what I use each tool for:

A paint edger for crisp lines with no tape. I find these best for vertical surfaces...ceilings were a little tough to get the pressure right.

A sprayer for that ultra smooth, professional finish. I used mine for my kitchen cabinets as well as my dentil crown molding which was very detailed.

A lidded paint cup so you can pick up where you left off without cleaning everything out. Usually most projects require 2 coats and a days worth of drying time. These have been so handy!

And paint pens for the touch-ups that would otherwise require breaking out the whole setup again.

These aren’t fancy, they’re just the right tools for the right job.

This transformation is going to be 🔥

This laundry room has made my skin crawl for 8 years. My peel & stick tiles and popcorn ceiling removal were basically putting lipstick on a pig, and I’ve been living with it half finished for years.

Now it’s finally getting what it deserves.

I’m adding the appliance of my dreams: an at-home dry cleaning machine. But I couldn’t put baby in the corner, so I thought “let’s build floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and really blow this out!” Fun fact: I’ve never built anything 3D in my life before.

The goal is a laundry room that feels warm, elevated, and in sync with the rest of the house. Not just a place to do laundry but a command center designed for how I actually live.

He quoted me $670 to fix a drawer. Over the phone. From a photo. Without measurements. Without ever seeing it in person.

That was the moment something snapped. I’d been handed ridiculous quotes by people who took one look at me and decided I didn’t know any better and for a long time, I let it happen because I didn’t think I had any other option. Not this time.

Instead of fixing the drawer, I renovated the whole kitchen.

Painted the cabinets. Ripped out the glass tile backsplash and put in paneling. Painted my dark granite counters to look like faux marble. Swapped every hinge to soft close. New light fixture. Island back in.

I didn’t know how to do most of it when I started. I started anyway.

I thought the home office was done… until I actually tried working in it.

Raise your hand if you accidentally turned your house into a white box 🙋‍♀️

When I bought this place, it was chaos. I didn’t have a vision yet but I knew I had to undo everything before I could think clearly.

So I did what a lot of us do… I painted everything white.

And honestly? I followed a trend.
It wasn’t me.

But that phase taught me something I couldn’t have skipped: what doesn’t feel right is just as important as what does.

So now I’m going back room by room with a 2.0 mindset:
→ more color
→ more contrast
→ more personality
→ more me

Less “is this in style?”
More “does this feel right?”

I’m starting my first white box flip of 2026—and it’s going to be a good one.
