You know all those novelty mugs in your cabinet collecting dust? Why not give them new life by drilling a drainage hole in the bottom and slipping a potted plant inside? I guarantee, they’ll get much more use than they’re currently getting, and you can switch them out as soon as the season ends.

For this task, I used a 5/16” diamond drill bit to create a single drainage hole in the bottom of this ceramic mug. This mug getting more use now than it ever has before!

In need of a nice (and inexpensive) pot for your indoor plants? Look for a plastic tumbler in a color and style you like. I used a pointed, metal skewer to burn a drainage hole into the bottom of the cup and popped my plant right in. DIY can be fun! Give it a go.

Think of all those mugs sitting in your cabinet, never getting any use. How about turning them into planters for your house plants? With the right tools and technique, you can turn almost anything into a planter.

Drainage holes are absolutely necessary for a plant to thrive. If water can’t escape the pot, the plant will likely rot. Luckily, a drill with a diamond bit can make the perfect hole. The key is to start drilling at an angle, keep the bit and surface wet, and BE PATIENT. Let the drill do the work (don’t add any force or you could break the mug). This hole took about 10 minutes of careful drilling, so patience is key. You can do this! Think of the possibilities!

I received a beautiful orchid as a gift last summer. It had lovely white blooms, which have long since faded. Over time, the leaves yellowed and lost their strength. I thought it might be time to repot. I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer. The soil was incredibly compact and the roots were struggling. I don’t think the plant would have lasted much longer!

The whole process took about 10-15 minutes, and was relatively simple. I hope the plant is happy in its new pot and soil. I’m looking forward to seeing blooms again in the future.

Note: be sure to keep the crown of the orchid dry for optimal plant health!

Next time you need a drip tray for your potted plants, consider using something non conventional that reflects your style. Dip dishes, trinket trays, and even candy bowls work perfectly. Just be sure they’re wide enough to sit your plants comfortably inside, and have a lip to hold a bit of water.

I’ve linked some lovely options here.

Talk about a quick fix! My orchid tipped over and its vase cracked. Now what? Where could I find a vase the size of a Dixie cup? Target to the rescue! This 3 oz espresso mug offered the perfect fit. It’s adorable and suits the plant beautifully. Problem solved!

Part 3 of maintaining my indoor plant shelf: My polka dot plants were looking leggy and sparse. So I’m starting fresh by taking a few cuttings and seeing if they can become healthy, independent plants.

My trusty propagation station has helped me root hundreds of cuttings, which have been planted outside in my garden or kept on my plant shelf inside. Taking cuttings is an interesting process and can help you save money if you’re looking to increase your plant supply. Some cuttings will eagerly root, while others won’t, so it’s best to take a few more than you need. If roots grow, you’ll see them in about 2 weeks.

How cute is this?!? I LOVE growing plants from seed, and as someone who’s trying to build up their indoor plant collection, this is a fun and inexpensive way to do so. I nearly walked out of the store with this one, but a quick google search informed me that philodendrons are toxic to cats and dogs. Now, I love plants, but I love my furry family members more, so back on the shelf this went. But, if you’re in a pet free home, this would be a fun activity. There are also coleus and eucalyptus varieties (which are best for pet free homes, as well).

This is my favorite indoor corner of the house. It holds cuttings from my garden, books, knick-knacks, and indoor plants. It’s a lovely living space that is especially nice during the colder months.

Now that summer is starting to wind down, I’ll be sprucing it up, potting up cuttings, rearranging, and trying new pots and plant finds. Stay tuned to see how it progresses, and shop your favorite items below.

Having an indoor plant corner has been so lovely and soothing. Here, I’m potting up my son’s baby spider plant. It certainly got a fabulous upgrade with this bubble planter from Target
