I have a question for my American friends… 👀

I have transformed multiple pieces of furniture that people have wanted rid of and I’m always happy they were saved and didn’t end up in a landfill.

BUT…

I am way too much of a scaredy cat to pull up to somebody’s house if I see a piece at the end of their driveway because it feels so odd to me 😅

Like… what if thy still want it? Or thy wonder who is parking up outside their house looking at their trash at night? 😂 Is this like an unwritten code among Americans that if it’s at the bottom of the drive it’s fair game? You don’t knock and double check?? 😶

Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough but for now I’ll stick to scrolling Facebook marketplace for my curb alerts.

Either way, I’ll forever be the girl who finds treasure in the trash ✨💗

I’m not sure this plan is going to work 🫠

Step one: flip furniture
Step two: don’t fall in love with it
Step three: I’ve already failed at step two 😅🥲

It was so hard to part with this coffee table after many, many days of sanding… but the lady who bought it loved it, and that definitely made it a little easier 🥹🫶

If you’re new to this series, the goal is to see if I can take a bit of pressure off our mortgage by refinishing old, secondhand furniture and selling it on.

This isn’t about making the most profit as quickly as possible. I’m definitely not a “flip fast, paint everything” kind of girl, I’m more of a take way too long picking wood stain girly 😅
But if I can bring these pieces back to life and make a bit of money along the way, I’ll take that as a win 🙌

So here’s the cost breakdown 👇

Cost: $0
Materials: $59
Sold: $520
Profit: $461

What I bought:
– Wood butter: $40
– New hardware: $19

What I already had:
– Wood stain
– Pre-stain
– Poly topcoat

I’m going to include everything I use in these breakdowns, but a lot of these materials will last across multiple projects, so hopefully the next few flips will cost even less 🤞

I’m realising very quickly that using what you already have makes the biggest difference… but I can’t help it, the hardware really makes the piece ok! 😶🫶

I don’t think people talk enough about this part…

When you buy an older home, there’s always something that needs doing and it’s ALWAYS expensive 🥴

We’ve got a list longer than I’d like to admit, and while I DIY as much as I can, even the cost of materials adds up so quickly.

Big projects cost big money, and I’ve definitely been feeling a little house broke lately… so I wanted to see if I could start creating a bit of that back instead of just spending it.

The plan is to find old pieces people don’t want anymore and try turning them into something worth selling.

The problem is, I don’t really do quick flips 🫠 I get attached, I spend a whole week sanding, and then not want to sell it when I’m finished 😶🥲

So whether this plan actually works? Your guess is as good as mine 😅 But this isn’t about making a quick buck, it’s about putting my creativity to use and hopefully taking a little pressure off along the way.

She’s finished! Can you believe this used to be bright orange with animal stickers and baby safety equipment? 😅

I stripped the entire piece, spent days sanding everything smooth,then stained it in my favorite color, topped it with three layers of poly and finished it with some wood butter and new hardware! You can watch the full process in my coffee table highlight.

It’s not you 👀
It’s your prep work.

Most people know they need to remove the old finish, sand, and clean off all the dust… but then they go straight in with stain and end up with a blotchy mess 😬

You’re skipping a vital step!

Wood conditioner (aka pre-stain).

This magical product does exactly what it sounds like, it conditions the wood so the stain absorbs evenly instead of soaking in too fast in some spots and not enough in others (which is what causes most blotchy finishes).

⚠️ Not ALL wood needs it.
Some woods really benefit from it (like pine, maple, and birch)
while others like oak are more forgiving and don’t always require it (and can even look a little less rich if you use it).

Not sure what wood you have? That’s ok! You don’t need to know the type just whether it will stain evenly

Here are two easy ways to tell:

💧The water test:
Lightly wipe the surface with a damp cloth
→ If it darkens quickly and looks patchy = use pre-stain
→ If it darkens evenly = you can usually skip it

🖌️ The safe test:
Try a patch test, staining with and without conditioner, somewhere hidden like inside a drawer, underneath or on a scrap piece.
This way you can see how the stain reacts before committing (especially important if you’re working with veneer where you don’t have a lot of thickness to sand)

This one step can completely change your results

It took a whole year of work to enjoy this glow 🥹☀️

This is the most magical DIY project I’ve ever taken on aaand undoubtedly the longest and hardest too 😅

When we moved into our house this was an old slab of concrete that served zero purpose but I always dreamt of it as an old world European garden bursting with veggies.

I finished just in time for the end of the growing season so now I’m patiently waiting for spring to see what I can grow. If you have any gardening tips for me, please share the because I am very much new to this! 🌱

This is my first time winter sowing and I have absolutely no idea if it will work but I’m really hopeful!

Below is a detailed breakdown of everything I used, plus all the ways I saved money, so you can calculate your own costs if you choose to make your own ☺️

(I waited all year for the @loweshomeimprovement spring sale to get this price!)

(You can find these on fb marketplace if you don’t need many)
Mortar x2 $ 7.47 total: $14.94
Landscape adhesive x5 $10.98 total: $54.9
Stucco scratch and brown 6x $9.65 total: $57.9
Stucco white topcoat finish coat 4x $25.44 total: $101.76

Whilst this is still a lot of money to spend on a garden, and everyone has different budgets, the beds averaged at around $170 each and will hopefully last a lifetime since they will never rot. I think that’s pretty impressive! 😅

Put your hand up if you’ve ever been personally victimized by paint stripper 🙋‍♀️

I don’t know if it’s user error but I never get the satisfying scrape like the furniture flippers do, just a sticky gooey mess 🫠

My scraper however never lets me down 😏

If it’s a flat surface I’m stripping, I will always reach for this guy first because it saves me so much time and messy clean up.

My husband could NOT see the vision with this one 😂 but I could and it was a FREE FB marketplace find so it came home and now it’s my new project 💁‍♀️

It’s solid wood so I’m envisioning a dark stain but all those little intricate details are going to be a painnnn to sand 🥲 painting would be so much easier!

🤯 @bonesandbuilds reminded me of my first proper DIY project I the other day and I realized that only 1% you were actually here to see it! 🤯

My entryway transformation was controversial for a few reasons, I had never picked up a saw before but I wanted to build a custom closet, I painted over my old slate tile floors andddd I drenched the entire room in black. 👀

Sure some of my decisions may be seen as unusual but every risk I took in this space was worth it imo! I started this room knowing nothing about DIY and came out the other end not only with a space that’s beautiful but that reminds me every day that I am more capable than I know.

Now I have a whole page dedicated to that exact message! I want other beginners to trust in their creativity and try something new. You never know what it will unlock! ✨

I made these terracotta plant tags for my biggest DIY project yet, a Mediterranean garden made from concrete blocks - haven’t seen it? Check out my page, it’s pinned to the top! ☺️🌿🌸

I wanted a simple way to keep track of all my little seedlings this spring, but I also had a couple of requirements: they needed to feel as elegant as the rest of my garden, and I needed something I could make quickly and affordably. These clay tags ticked all the boxes!

Once sealed, the clay is durable and weather-resistant, so they won’t rot like wooden tags and I love that I can keep adding to my collection as my garden grows.
