Last summer was our first summer where we were really active with Brooks and needed “stuff” while out and about! There were many times where the items that I carry in my diaper bag all the time weren’t what we needed for having water fun! This summer, I wanted to create an easy to grab ‘summer fun bag’ that can stay in the car and be grabbed anytime we need it. An impromptu visit to the splash pad, swinging by the pool because it ended up being a beautiful day, an invitation to run through a sprinkler at a friends house, or to throw on the boat for an afternoon out on the water! I thought about all the things that I always wished that I had on me but never seemed to remember to pack in my diaper bag. Every item is a live and learn need and I hope it’s a helpful list for you to create your own summer fun bags!

Twin nursery reveal! This was such a fun project for my hasband and I making a special room that felt classic yet precious for baby boys. While they’ll be in the Snoos in our room for a while, we love letting them spend time lounging in here in the sunshine! Just like with everything else in our home, I love the blend of vintage finds and contemporary finishes. The hand-sewn bed skirts for our Wave cribs lovingly made by my mom totally make the room. We swapped out our jute kitchen rugs for runners from Ruggable! While I absolutely loved the look at the jute runners, after four years they began to break down and shed. Really bad. And the shedding was not working for me trying to keep my kitchen clean all the time! I wanted something great for high traffic but also able to be cleaned. This was the best of both worlds and I am so happy with the pattern I picked. Notice anything different? We painted the front of our island! This was literally a project that I woke up one day and decided to tackle. I already had a paint color in mind (thanks Pinterest!) and made a quick trip to our local hardware store and then an hour later after only one coat we had a showstopper in our kitchen! It’s amazing how just a little pop of color can change the whole look of the space. We opted for Benjamin Moore‘s Pike’s Peak Gray but as you can see it’s definitely a blue gray color. In certain lights it looks more gray and in others more blue. Our entryway has been a labor of love lately. I’ve had it decorated since we first moved in, but it has never felt like it fit the house. It didn’t feel cohesive or match my ideas for this space. I think we’ve all had to learn in this season of life we’re in to just let things go. Let go of the ideas we’ve had of what this year was supposed to look like. Celebrations that were supposed to be had, vacations we were supposed to take, and life milestones that looked very different than we envisioned them. There’s been a lot of ‘breathe and let it go’ this year for my household (my sons first year of life has looked very different than I ever thought) and I’m sure it’s been the same for you. When babies reach an age where they can start solid foods (for our family this is six months old and we stay hardfast to this milestone), taking the plunge into the world of solids can be very intimidating! I don’t know why I had so much anxiety about him starting food, but I wanted to make sure I did it right and started him with a strong foundation. We personally chose the path of baby led weaning instead of traditional weaning. Basically what that means is you let baby take the lead! From the very first introduction you give them whole foods cooked, cut, and served to them in ways that they can immediately start feeding themselves. They eat what you eat! There are some accommodations you have to make for added sugars, sodium, and choking hazards, but for the most part it is the easiest way to get your baby eating at the dinner table right along side the family!

I’ve included all of my favorite bowls, spoons, cutting utensils, and diaper bag essentials for eating on-the-go. My biggest must have would have to be the Baby Danza 8-1 has been an absolute lifesaver for our baby led weaning journey! It does everything from defrost, steam, warm, juice, chop, purée, and even sterilize! For all those pacifiers, bottles, and pump parts, man I wish that I had this months longer than I have! I’ve also used it to make a few purées to have on hand in the freezer when we need to eat something but we’re not really feeling doing it ourselves. Babies, amiright? Ask me about the happy belly smoothie recipe for those occasional constipation days- it really works! 😆

I’ve also linked a couple cookbooks and how-to books that easily explain what baby led weaning is, how to start, and how to progress as they get older. Anyone else stubborn like me where if someone tells you what you will or won’t do, it only makes you more motivated to prove them wrong? 💁🏼‍♀️ I’ve always pushed back against generalizations from others about what kind of woman, employee, wife, and mother I will end up being. “You better enjoy decorating your house like this now, because once you have a child, your whole house is going to be covered in toys and won’t look like this!” “good luck ever having a beautiful home again!” and while it has been a little more work to maintain my home like I’m used to since having Brooks, I don’t feel like I’ve had to give it up. Besides, it’s kind of what I do for a living so it’s not like I can just say sorry, I’m a mother now, home decor be gone! 😆

I don’t believe that motherhood (or fatherhood) has to be an either or situation. Where you have to somehow lose yourself and give up everything that you find enjoyment in just because you become a parent. Just because you share your home with your children. I think you can do both if it’s something that you care about; if it’s something that you value. The example I always like to use when talking about priorities is dusting your blinds. Do you make dusting your blinds daily a priority? Probably not. I mean honestly, who has the time for that?! But, what if somebody offered you $500 a day to dust your blinds. Do you think you would find the time for it? You bet! Because you’ve assigned VALUE to it. That priority has value for you. That goes for anything in your life that you enjoy. Assign it value. Make time for hobbies or decorating and doing things that you enjoy. Whether that is reading a book, baking, getting in an exercise class, or binge watching your favorite TV show before bed. Don’t forget you are an individual too! And if putting out throw pillows and pumpkins makes your heart happy, you go on and do it girlfriend! Don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise!

The best offense is a good defense and being prepared for all the what-ifs and potential nursing needs will only help you be that much more successful. I’ve linked products to help with positioning, boob-friendly clothing, healing and protecting your nipples, and all things pumping and storing milk. I can attest I’ve used every single product here in my nursing journey and we’re not stopping anytime soon! One key piece of advice mama, if you run into ANY roadblocks on your nursing path don’t be afraid to seek out supportive professionals. Almost anything you come up against can be addressed with a little troubleshooting and support. Find a registered IBCLC in your area and be honest with your goals and concerns. You are NOT alone and there are people you can put in your corner that can help you reach your breastfeeding goal whether that’s 1 week or 2+ years! Knowledge and support for all mothers is best!

I get it, hospital bag packing lists are a dime a dozen! But what about the things you packed and didn’t use? Or more like, things you WISH you had packed and didn’t know you needed?! I’ve tagged some of my favorite products that helped make my labor and recovery experience as comfortable as possible. Things I didn’t readily see on a packing list but were total life-savers! Items such as: giant water bottle with straw (not every hospital provides one! Mine didn’t!), tap nightlight for nursing without having to use the overhead lights, sound machine for baby, your own Depends for better leak control, and laboring essential oils. Lavender for a calming effect during contractions and clary sage to help stimulate contractions. Clary sage has a sedating effect which potentially has a positive impact on reducing adrenaline and aids in oxytocin production! A few drops on a cotton ball (which can be easily removed if not feeling it and thrown away) during labor made a big difference in my experience. And lets not forget a cuteeee #momlife bag that can be used long after birth- now taking preorders! You’re going to rock this birth mama!

As a mom of loss I know just how special and miraculous pregnancy is. It is a blessing start to finish. But, that doesn’t mean that its easy or without its pains and ailments! No one warned me about those obscure pregnancy symptoms like carpal tunnel, insomnia, round ligament pain, and hemorrhoids (just keepin’ it real y’all!). I’ve got you mama! These are some of the must haves that made growing a tiny human more bearable! Pantry overhaul! When you have a smaller pantry closet like we do, organization is key! Keeping everything in it’s appropriate place not only helps keep things tidy, but helps you see what you have! We had many duplicates because we couldn’t see what was hidden in the chaos! I love all theses pantry baskets and racks from the Container Store! Not only are they functional, but beautiful as well.
