Southern Buttermilk Pie 🥧

Southern Soul Food Series | Part 4 🤍

One of the most underrated Southern desserts there is. With a rich, buttery custard filling and a flaky pie crust, this old-fashioned recipe has been passed down for generations for good reason.

What You Need:

3 large eggs
½ cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup butter, melted and cooled
1 cup sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch
½ tsp salt
1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

To Make:

Preheat your oven to 350°.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth.

Next, whisk in the sugar, melted butter, cornstarch, and salt until completely combined.

Pour the filling into the unbaked pie crust.

Bake for 55 minutes, or until the center is just set and the top is lightly golden.

Let the pie cool completely before slicing. I like to serve chilled!! SO decadent! Enjoy! 😋

Southern Slow-cooked Butter Beans

🤍 Southern Soul Food Series | Part 1

I love serving this as the main dish, but it’s just as good as a Southern side alongside catfish, fried chicken or pork chops! ✨ Follow along for more in this series!

What You Need:

* 1 (16 oz) bag frozen butter beans
* 4 oz torn prosciutto or chopped bacon
* 1 small onion, diced
* 1/2 cup brown sugar
* 6 cups chicken stock
* 4 tablespoons butter
* Salt & Pepper to taste

To Make:

1. In a large Dutch oven, cook the chopped prosciutto and diced onion over medium heat until the onion is soft.
2. Stir in the brown sugar and cook until it has dissolved.
3. Add the frozen butter beans and pour in 6 cups of chicken stock. Bring everything to a boil.
4. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the butter beans are tender and the broth has thickened.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in 4 tablespoons of butter and let it simmer for another 5–10 minutes.
6. Ladle over basmati rice, crack a little more fresh black pepper over the top and serve with a side of warm cornbread.
