A room can be completely pretty and still feel like it’s missing a little something. The first version is a good example. Nothing is really wrong with it. The colors coordinate, the furniture works together, and everything feels cohesive. But so many of the choices are similar that your eye doesn’t have many places to go. Different wood tones, more variation in the pillows, mixed artwork and frames, different pottery finishes, and colors that repeat in smaller ways throughout the room give it so much more depth. That’s the difference between matching and relating. You can bring in an olive chair, an old wood table, a patterned pillow or a darker vase without finding an exact match somewhere else. Sometimes the hardest part of decorating a room is simply knowing where to start.

For this one, I started with the rug.
Its faded blues, warm browns, parchment tones and tiny touches of muted color gave me a direction for everything that came next.

Instead of trying to find pieces that matched it exactly, I pulled from different parts of the rug—the smoky blue for the sofa, warm brown for the leather, aged brass and gold, a little burgundy, and softer neutrals to give everything somewhere to rest.

For this one, I used a small vintage-inspired cabinet to give the corner some weight, then layered in a mirror, lamp, oversized vase, a few books, candle, stool and basket to make it feel collected without filling every inch.

The best part is that this little formula can work in so many places—a living room corner, entryway, wide hallway, or that random stretch of wall that has never felt quite finished.

Bringing back one of my most-loved fall pillow guides because these combinations still feel just as good. 🤎

I wanted to show what happens when you take both sets and spread them across one big sectional—and I love how well they play together. There’s quite a bit of pattern here, but it doesn’t feel chaotic because the colors keep repeating from pillow to pillow.

The rust and olive bring in that warmer fall feeling, while the cream, chocolate brown, checks, florals, and different textures keep it from feeling overly seasonal.

It’s really just a warmer, moodier version of an everyday living room—which is my favorite way to decorate for fall.

This one is such a good example of why proportion can completely change how a room feels—even when you barely touch the furniture.

The room itself was already pretty.

The bigger issue was the fireplace wall and how the different pieces related to the height of the space. Adjusting the scale of the surround and mantel and taking the charcoal shiplap all the way up gives that tall wall a much stronger sense of balance.

The window treatments make a difference here too. Taking the curtains high draws your eye up, gives those tall windows more presence, and helps frame the fireplace instead of leaving all of that vertical space feeling empty.

I only brought a little more charcoal into the room through the pillows so the fireplace didn’t feel like a dark island in an otherwise light space.

I love when a kids room can feel unmistakably like a kids room without every piece needing to be overly themed. This little girl’s bedroom has plenty of sweetness, but the warm wood, soft sage, woven textures and vintage-inspired details give it a more collected feel that can grow with her.

The goal with fall decorating this year isn’t to make the whole house suddenly look fall. I’d rather take what already works and make it feel a little warmer for the season.

So instead of changing the room, I pulled together a few pieces that shift the color and texture just enough—deeper burgundy, warm brown, aged finishes, patterned textiles and branches that feel a little moodier than the greenery I’d use the rest of the year.

This little bedside moment is exactly why I love putting together curated shopping guides. None of these pieces are especially loud on their own, but together they give a simple nightstand so much more character.

An entryway doesn’t need a lot of furniture or decor to make a good first impression—it just needs the right mix of pieces.

For this one, I started with a warm wood console and layered in pieces that bring in different tones, textures and ages. The faded rug adds some soft pattern and color, the woven baskets make the open shelf feel useful, and the lighter ceramic lamp keeps all of that warm wood and aged pottery from becoming too heavy. I also love the mix of the larger landscape with the smaller framed prints because it gives the wall that collected-over-time feeling without filling every inch of it.

This is also a good example of why I like mixing light and dark, polished and weathered, and old with new. You can stay within a warm, fairly neutral palette and still have plenty of contrast and personality.

Your home doesn’t need to fit neatly into one design style to feel pulled together.

Actually, some of the rooms that feel the most personal are the ones where you can’t quite give them a single label.

I put these rooms together to show a few different ways that can look.
English cottage mixed with something cleaner and more contemporary. Vintage pieces alongside newer upholstery. Rustic wood with more refined finishes. Coastal blues and woven textures paired with pieces that feel older and collected. None of the rooms are about mixing things just for the sake of mixing them—the pieces still have to make sense together.

That’s really where cohesion comes in.

Instead of asking whether every piece belongs to the same “style,” look for the things that connect them. Repeating wood tones. A color that appears in a rug and again in a pillow or piece of art. Similar shapes. Materials that relate to one another. Even just a consistent feeling throughout the room.

That gives you so much more freedom to choose things because you genuinely love them instead of wondering whether they technically fit the label you’ve given your home.

And over time, I think that’s what makes a home start to feel like you.

A coffee table is one of those places where a few small styling decisions can completely change how the whole living room feels.

For this guide, I focused less on filling the surface and more on creating layers with different heights, shapes and materials. The taller vase and stems give the arrangement some height, the tray grounds the smaller pieces, and the books create another level for styling without adding another large object. Then the smaller details—the carved wood box, aged brass candle and decorative bowl with beads—bring in the texture that keeps a neutral palette from falling flat.

And I think that last part makes such a difference. When most of your colors are warm and neutral, you don’t necessarily need more decor—you need enough variation between wood, stone, metal, glass, greenery and textiles to make those neutrals feel collected.

You also don’t have to keep every piece contained inside one tray. I like letting the books sit separately so the styling stretches across the table while still leaving open space between the groupings. It feels a little more natural and less like one perfectly arranged centerpiece.

Apparently painting the office brown was all it took to give the whole room a personality.

I’ve been wanting to play with a home office that feels a little different from some of the others I’ve designed, and this warmer, more collected direction was such a fun one.

The brown walls set the tone, but I didn’t want everything else in the room to fall into the same warm neutral palette. That soft denim blue was exactly what it needed. I repeated it just a few times—in the chair, rug, pottery and books—so it feels connected without making blue a major part of the room.

I also mixed some more traditional details with cleaner pieces rather than committing to one specific style. The molding, landscape art, vintage-inspired rug and cane chair add character, while the simpler desk and styling keep everything feeling current and approachable.

It’s warm, collected, a little unexpected…and proof that brown can be a really beautiful neutral.🤎

This boys’ room started with a pretty specific goal: make it feel like a kid’s room now, without designing something he’ll completely outgrow in a few years.

The blue plaid wallpaper gives the room plenty of personality, but pairing it with the deeper blue wainscoting, ceiling trim and floor trim makes the pattern feel more architectural and grounded. Then I brought in all of that warm wood through the bed, dresser and desk to keep the blues from feeling too cool.

For the decor, I went with things that feel distinctly him without turning the entire room into one big theme. Football details, the little pennant, mountain and baseball artwork all give you those boyhood references, but mixing them with landscapes and more vintage-inspired pieces keeps the room feeling collected rather than matchy.

And I think that’s what makes a kids’ room easier to grow with. The foundation can stay—the wallpaper, millwork, furniture and classic bedding—and the smaller pieces can change as his interests do.

This bedroom was already perfectly nice. It just needed a little more personality to make it feel like a room you’d actually remember.

And I think that’s an important distinction when you’re looking around your own home and feeling like something isn’t quite working. You don’t necessarily need to start over—or start renovating. Sometimes the bones of the room are completely fine and it’s everything layered into it that needs more intention.

I did warm up the room with a slightly deeper and warmer toned paint color and new warm wood floors, but beyond those two updates, the transformation comes almost entirely from lighting, furniture, textiles and decor.

The warmer wood tone furniture immediately gave the room more depth, while the vintage-inspired rug brought in pattern and softened all of that open floor space. I kept the bedding mostly creamy and neutral, then used the patterned pillows, striped bolster and deep brown throw to bring in contrast without making the bed feel busy. The darker wood bench at the foot of the bed adds another old-world element without taking up much visual space.

Then there’s the lighting. Swapping the ceiling fan for a chandelier makes a surprisingly big difference because it changes what you notice the second you walk into the room.

None of these changes are particularly drastic on their own. Together, they take the room from “this is nice” to a bedroom that feels warm, layered and much more special.

Bookshelves can hold quite a bit without feeling cluttered when there’s enough variation—and enough empty space—between everything.

For this shelf, I mixed old books with artwork, pottery, wood, greenery and a few smaller decorative pieces, changing the height and scale from shelf to shelf instead of trying to make each one perfectly symmetrical. I also like letting some pieces stand on their own rather than filling every open spot. That little bit of breathing room is what keeps a collected bookshelf from starting to feel busy.

And you definitely don’t need these exact pieces to get the same look. I curated similar artwork, pottery, bowls, books and vintage-inspired decor that would give you the same warm, collected feeling. Everything I found is linked here to shop.

This room had all the basics. A sofa, chairs, a rug, window treatments, lighting, art and decor were already there. But even with all of those pieces, it still felt a little unfinished.

What it was missing was character.

And character usually isn’t one thing you can point to. It’s the way the architectural details, scale, textures, patterns and collected pieces all work together to make a room feel like someone actually thought about it.

Here, adding simple vertical trim and carrying it around the room gave those plain walls something to contribute to the design.

A larger rug gave the seating area better scale, while hanging the curtains higher and wider and adding a woven shade made the window feel more substantial and brought in another natural texture.

Then I could build on that foundation with the details—the patterned pillows, throw, greenery, pottery and collected pieces that give the room warmth and personality.

I think that’s an important distinction when you have a room that technically has everything it “needs,” but still doesn’t feel finished. Before buying another random piece to fill an empty spot, look at what the room might be missing as a whole.

Sometimes it needs more architectural interest. Sometimes the scale is off. Sometimes everything is so similar that it needs contrast, pattern or texture.
And sometimes it’s a combination of all of those things.

These pieces are from one of my best-selling mantel decor shopping guides, and I think part of what has made this collection so popular is how easily it can work in different styles of homes.

In this modern organic living room, the pieces take on a completely different feel. The warm landscape, earthy pottery and darker metal accents add just enough age and character against the cleaner plaster fireplace, light wood built-ins and all of those organic textures.

Because the fireplace is such a substantial focal point, I started with the oversized landscape to give the mantel enough visual weight. Layering the smaller framed art in front adds depth without filling every bit of empty space, while the tall pottery and candlesticks balance each other through height rather than perfect symmetry. The smaller books, bowl and sculptural accents finish the layers without making the mantel feel cluttered.

I think that mix is also why these pieces are so versatile. Nothing is so specific to one design style that it dictates the rest of the room.

Instead, the artwork, pottery, metal and sculptural pieces can take on a slightly different personality depending on what you pair them with.

It’s something I try to be really intentional about when creating my shopping guides. I want the pieces to look beautiful together, but I also want you to be able to pull out the ones you love and mix them with what you already own.

A kitchen can feel completely different without changing its entire footprint, and this design board is a good example of where I’d put the investment to make that happen.

I started with a pretty standard builder-grade honey oak kitchen and built a warmer, more timeless palette around it. Instead of replacing all of the cabinets, I kept the existing cabinetry and added a second row above it, finishing everything with crown molding to create the illusion of custom cabinetry that extends all the way to the ceiling. Painting it all in a warm taupe gives the cabinetry a completely different presence without starting over.

I also removed the microwave and cabinets over the stove and replaced them with a customized vent hood to bring some architectural character into that wall.

The existing island gets additional trim work before being stained a deeper wood tone, making it feel more like a substantial piece of furniture than a standard builder-grade island.

And I love the idea of replacing the basic pantry door with that warm wood-and-glass version—it has a slightly vintage quality that makes the space feel so much more special.

Creamy Taj Mahal quartzite keeps the perimeter counters light, while the darker soapstone on the island breaks up all of those warm neutrals and gives the wood island a little more weight.

The patterned backsplash is subtle from a distance but adds exactly the kind of variation and age I’d want in a kitchen like this.

Then medium-light white oak floors, aged brass hardware, a vintage-inspired faucet and classic pendant lighting keep the whole palette feeling layered rather than overly coordinated.

These are the kinds of details I look at together when I’m designing a room because no finish really exists on its own. The undertones, contrast, texture and materials all need to make sense next to one another before you ever start ordering anything.

This builder-grade living room had plenty of potential—it just needed some of the details that make a room feel finished and intentional.

I started with the room itself, replacing the carpet with warm wood flooring, adding box trim for architectural character, and layering bamboo shades with full-length curtains to soften the windows. From there, I brought in a mix of warm wood, olive upholstery, vintage-inspired patterns and collected details to give the room more depth without making it feel overly decorated.

And then there was the TV. Because as much as I love a beautiful living room, it still has to work for the people who actually live there. Instead of trying to hide it or pretend it wasn’t needed, I incorporated it into the design with an open console underneath so the trim work can still be seen.

It’s a good reminder that builder-grade doesn’t have to stay builder-grade—and practical doesn’t have to mean sacrificing pretty.

The same pillows can look completely different depending on the room you put them in, which is exactly what I wanted to show with these fall combinations.

I curated two sets of five pillows with colors, patterns and textures that all work together, but you definitely don’t need all five. The homes and design styles change, but the pillows still work because the colors and patterns were chosen to complement one another without feeling too matched.

And that’s really my favorite way to decorate for fall. A little more texture, earthier colors and a few thoughtful layers can shift the feeling of a room without filling it with things that only make sense for one season.

Here’s the second fall throw pillow combination from my latest curated shopping guide styled in a room, and this one is a really good example of how much pattern and texture you can layer while still keeping a space soft and neutral.

This is a 3D rendering showing how the pillows could look styled together on a larger sectional. I chose five that all work with one another, but I intentionally didn’t make them match too closely. The mix of plaid, smaller-scale prints, vintage-inspired pattern and texture is what keeps a neutral combination from falling flat, while the warm cream, taupe and brown tones tie everything back together.

You also don’t need a sectional—or all five pillows—to use the combination. Pick two or three for a smaller sofa, use one with a solid pillow on a chair, or layer the full set if you have more space to fill. They were curated so you can choose what works for your home without having to figure out which pillows will coordinate.

Every pillow within each set was chosen to coordinate, which means you can use all five on a larger sectional or pull two or three for a smaller sofa or chair without having to figure out the combination yourself.

I kept the colors warm and earthy and mixed in vintage-inspired florals, stripes, plaids and plenty of texture so they feel like fall without relying on anything overly seasonal.

A builder-grade kitchen doesn’t always need to be completely gutted to feel like a different space.

For this design, I started with a pretty typical honey oak kitchen and looked at what could be changed while still working with the existing footprint. Instead of replacing all of the cabinetry, I kept the existing cabinets and added a second row of cabinets above them, finished with crown molding to create the look of custom cabinetry that extends all the way to the ceiling. Then a warmer taupe cabinet color completely changes the way they read.

Over the stove, I removed the microwave and cabinets and replaced them with a customized vent hood to bring in some of the architectural character the original kitchen was missing. I also widened the island and added some really pretty trim work before staining it a deeper wood tone and topping it with soapstone, and swapped the basic pantry door for a warm wood-and-glass door that feels a little vintage and special.

New countertops and backsplash, wide plank oak flooring, aged brass finishes and vintage-inspired lighting bring the rest of the design together without reinventing the entire layout.

And then comes the part that really makes it feel finished—the styling. A vintage-inspired runner, woven counter stools, aged pottery, warm wood cutting boards and simple everyday pieces layered onto the counters soften all of those new finishes and make the kitchen feel collected rather than newly renovated.

It’s a good reminder that making a builder-grade home feel custom isn’t always about changing everything. Sometimes it’s knowing which things are worth changing and which ones you can work with.

Fall decorating doesn’t have to mean filling your home with things that only make sense for a few weeks out of the year. I’m much more drawn to pieces that bring in the feeling of fall through warm earth tones, aged finishes, beautiful texture, and those slightly moodier colors that make a room feel instantly cozier.

That was really the idea behind this vintage-inspired fall decor guide. Everything has that collected, found-over-time look I love, but none of it feels so seasonal that you couldn’t keep using it well beyond fall. And when those warmer tones are layered into an otherwise neutral room, they add so much depth without needing to completely redecorate.

I think fall decorating gets a lot more interesting when the pieces you’re bringing in don’t actually have to be “fall decor.”

That was really the idea behind this guide. I pulled together pieces with the colors, textures and warmth of fall, but chose things that could easily stay in your home long after the season changes.

A faded landscape, an aged vessel, warm wood, brass, block-print fabric and a few deeper earthy tones can shift a room toward fall without needing to completely redecorate it.

I also love how much character these pieces have. They’re new finds with the kind of variation, patina and detail that can make a room feel like it came together over time rather than all at once. Mixing the two different art styles and frames, pairing the floral pillow with that dusty rose velvet, and bringing in those darker vessels keeps everything from feeling too coordinated.

And then you really only need something as simple as a branch of changing leaves or a few rust-colored stems to make the whole combination feel appropriate for the season.

This is a 3D rendering of one of my kitchen design boards, and I think what makes this kitchen work so well is the way all of the warmer materials build on one another without everything needing to match.

The creamy cabinetry gives the room a soft, neutral foundation, while the terracotta backsplash brings in just enough variation and texture to keep all of that neutral from falling flat. Then there’s the furniture-style wood island, which adds a completely different finish and makes the kitchen feel a little more collected—as though pieces were chosen over time rather than everything being ordered as one matching set.

I especially love the marble here because it gives the room some contrast without cooling it down. Using it on the countertops and carrying it up the wall behind the range makes that whole area feel more intentional, while the aged brass, warm wood floors, ceiling beams, vintage-inspired lighting, artwork, pottery, and greenery fill in the smaller layers.

If you’re working with a mostly neutral kitchen, this is such a good example of how texture, material variation, and a few aged finishes can add character without relying on a lot of color.

This mantel decor guide has become my most-shopped mantel collection, and I think this is a good example of why these pieces are so easy to use together.

There’s plenty happening here, but no single piece is trying to do all of the work. The larger landscape gives the mantel a focal point, while the smaller framed art overlaps it just enough to make the arrangement feel a little more relaxed and collected. From there, I used the tall candlesticks and oversized pottery to give the ends some height, then filled in with books, a small candle, the sculptural knot, and that fluted bowl.

I especially like the mix of finishes. The warm wood, aged brass, creamy pottery, black metal, greenery, and muted artwork all sit within the same earthy palette, but the different materials keep a neutral mantel from falling flat.

It’s also a combination you can easily pull apart and use throughout your home. The artwork could move to a shelf, the pottery works on a console or dining table, and those candlesticks are the kind of pieces you can restyle again and again.
