Okay, can we talk about burgundy for a second?

If you want a color that feels rich without trying too hard, this is the one to build a palette around. Deep wine tones do all the work for you — warm, a little elegant, and honestly flattering on everyone.

So don't grab a burgundy dress and call it done. Start with burgundy as your anchor, then pull in the soft neutrals and warm tones that live next to it — creams, camels, a muted olive, a dusty blush. That's how the whole family ends up looking pulled together instead of matchy.

Perfect for fall portraits, holiday photos, vineyard sessions, that golden sunset light. One of those palettes you'll reach for year after year. 🍷

You can't go wrong with light blue outfits for little boys. Soft blue feels fresh, classic, and playful, making it one of the easiest colors to style for family photo outfits, beach sessions, spring portraits, and first birthday photos. Mix stripes, linen, and textured knits for a coordinated look that still feels relaxed and natural.

Soft mauve and lavender dresses bring a romantic touch to family photo outfits. These muted shades are flattering on every skin tone and photograph beautifully during golden hour, making them perfect for spring family photos, summer sessions, maternity pictures, and garden portraits. Feminine, timeless, and easy to coordinate with the whole family.

Dad is usually the last person we think about when planning family photo outfits.

Mom’s dress gets picked first, the kids get coordinated, and dad kind of fills in the gap at the end.

But his color matters more than you’d think.

He’s often the one holding a little one, so he becomes the backdrop for their outfit. And he’s standing right next to mom, so his color either complements her dress or quietly competes with it.

That’s a lot of the frame to leave up to whatever’s clean in the closet.

The easiest fix is rich earth tones — think mocha, olive, chocolate.

They add depth without pulling focus, they photograph beautifully in any season, and they sit nicely next to a neutral dress or a soft floral instead of fighting it.

Give dad a color that’s actually working with everyone else, and the whole family looks more put-together.

I pulled together some of my favorite earth-tone pieces for dad so you can shop for him easily. 🤎

Warm neutrals just feel good in family photos. 🙌

These rich taupes and mochas give off that snuggly, grounded vibe — the kind that makes everyone look connected and glowy.

Perfect for autumn shoots, wooded backdrops, and that soft, sun-drenched look.

Neutral dresses do the heavy lifting for you. 🙌

These warm creams and soft ivories pair with denim, greens, terracotta — basically anything the rest of the family wears.

One easy piece, zero morning-of stress.

7 things every family photo outfit needs

I've styled a lot of family shoots, and the outfits that photograph beautifully almost always have these 7 things:

1. Soft colors that photograph well. Anything too bright or saturated bounces color onto skin and pulls the eye away from faces. Soft, muted tones keep the focus where it belongs.

2. Texture. Knit, lace, gauze, corduroy, linen. Texture is what makes a simple palette look rich instead of flat.

3. Movement. Flowy skirts, dresses, anything with a little drape. Movement is what makes candid photos feel alive instead of stiff.

4. The correct fit. Not too tight, not swimming in it. Fit is the fastest thing the camera picks up on — and the easiest to get right.

5. No branding. Logos and graphics date a photo instantly and pull attention straight to the chest.

6. Unique details. A ruffle, a button, an interesting sleeve, a hem detail. Little moments that make an outfit feel considered.

7. Layering. A cardigan, a jacket, a vest. Layers add depth and give you options if the weather turns.

Everything linked here checks these boxes 🤍

Neutral family photos are beautiful 🤍 The creams, the soft browns, that calm dreamy feel — if that's where you are, you're doing it right.

But here's the next step once you've mastered the neutral look: soft, dreamy color. Not loud, not matchy — just enough to give your photos a little life, while still feeling like *you*.

I know color feels risky. That's the whole reason families stay in all-neutrals — it's safe. So I want to make the leap feel easy: there are specific soft shades that photograph beautifully and won't overwhelm the neutrals you already love. The only catch is that coordinating more than one color needs a plan, or it goes off the rails fast.

That's exactly what the guide is for. Comment FAM and I'll send you the free Family Photo Outfit Style Guide with some of my tested favorite colors to start with.

Jeans aren't the problem.

Jeans every single session? That's what's limiting you.

Because when you default to the same safe outfits every time,

you get the same photos every time.

And picking outfits starts to feel like a chore instead of the fun part.

Here's what your photographer is secretly wishing you knew:

family photos are your excuse to play dress up.

The flowy dress you'd never get to wear anywhere else.

The outfits that actually feel like an occasion.

And when you get this right, your whole family feels it.

My kids literally ask "when's our next photoshoot?"

And my hubby stopped complaining about pictures altogether —

because now he feels like he looks good in them. ☺️

That's when booking the next session becomes something you look forward to

instead of something you dread because of the outfit scramble.

Comment FAM and I'll send you the guide with everything your photographer is secretly wishing your family would show up in! 💛
Stop picking the dress first. It doesn't help coordinate the whole family. Start with this instead 👇

Here's the mistake almost everyone makes: you find one outfit you love (usually mom's dress), buy it, and then try to build everyone else's outfits around it. By the time you get to the kids and dad, nothing quite works.

The right order:
1. Build your palette first — based on your location, your photographer's editing style, and the colors that look best on your people
2. Choose your palette style — soft colors, a pattern anchor, or universal colors
3. Then shop — only pieces that live inside that palette, head to toe
4. Add texture and layers so your photos have depth

Here’s the mistake almost everyone makes: you find one outfit you love (usually mom’s dress), buy it, and then try to build everyone else’s outfits around it. By the time you get to the kids and dad, nothing quite works, the colors fight each other, and you end up with a cart full of returns and a family that looks thrown together instead of pulled together.

The fix is to flip the order.

Start with a color palette, not a single piece. Choose 4-5 colors that work together (some of those are neutral), that suit your family, and that fit the location and your photographer’s editing style. THEN shop within that palette for each person.

When you start with the palette instead of the dress, everything coordinates without being matchy. Everyone looks like they belong in the same photo. And you stop wasting money on pieces that don’t end up working.

It’s one small change in order, and it makes all the difference.

Okay I didn’t realize how much I needed a true seamless bra until this one…

It’s become my go-to for t-shirts because it just disappears under everything. No lines, no bulk, nothing showing through—just smooth and comfy all day.

It’s comfy, no underwire, and completely seamless 🤍 I got this soft purple color but I may have to go back and grab a few more so I always have one ready.

Linked it if you want it!

Lately I’ve been in my *simplify everything* era… and that includes how we watch TV.

I almost always have Gilmore Girls playing in the background while I work (tell me I’m not the only one rewatching it for the 100th time 😅☕️). Watching it feels like it's Autumn year round to me.

But, spending a ton of money on cable just to rewatch shows seems silly to me. So we made the switch to @frndlytv because it just made more sense.

All the channels I love to rewatch (hi Hallmark + Lifetime), without paying for a bunch of extras I don’t need.

It’s only $6.99/month with their annual plan, no contracts, and unlimited DVR—which is perfect because I *never* watch anything live anyway.

It just feels easier, more intentional, and it's way more affordable. 🤍

If you’ve been wanting to cut back on subscriptions or ditch cable, this is definitely one to look into.

I think all photographers should be sharing outfit links via platforms like LTK to help their clients out. 😍

Outfit stress shouldn’t be the thing that keeps people from booking, or causes them to show up to their sessions frazzled. Also, bad outfits shouldn’t be what’s keeping clients from loving the art you create.

It took me forever to make a talking video, lol. But I ripped the bandaid off so now I’m ready to start the conversation. 😉

I’ll be coming back on to talk about all the ways you can help your clients from super hands off to full service, there’s a fit for every photographer. 😍

📣 All Neutrals is just ONE choice.

And the real reason that neutrals work for photoshoots is not what most people think. It's not that they are neutral, or that they are not "colorful".

It's their VALUE, SATURATION LEVELS and lower levels of CONSTRAST that makes them work.

😍Value is the relative lightness or darkness of a color.
😍Saturation refers to the intensity of the color from strong to weak.
😍Contrast is the juxtaposition of dissimilar elements (such as color, tone, or emotion) in a work of art - or the lack therof.

And when you know how to work with these three aspects of color you can put ANY colors together into a well coordinated set of outfits for...ANY editing style, ANY background and ANY group of people.🥳

I don't know about you, but I like to have options!
🤔A little experiment with colors and family photo outfits.

The first set of outfits full of common mistakes:

Matching outfits.
Colors that clash with the location.
Loud patterns.

The next set of outfits:

Coordinated with each other and the location.

Can you see the difference just color can make?
