Isle Royale National Park — an island in the middle of Lake Superior and one of the most remote, least visited national parks in the Lower 48. There are no roads or cars, and it’s only accessible by ferry or seaplane.

We did a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip, covering 21 miles and staying at backcountry campsites along the way. It’s a park that takes more effort to reach—but totally worth it if you want a unique, off-the-grid experience.

Taylor’s right — Redwood trees aren’t hard to see 🌲
You just have to know where to look.

Redwood National and State Parks in northern California are home to the tallest trees on Earth, some soaring over 350 feet high. The park is actually a collection of protected areas — Redwood National Park, plus Prairie Creek, Jedediah Smith, and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Parks — all connected along Highway 101.

📍Location: Northern California coast, about 5–6 hours north of San Francisco
🚗 Getting There: Fly into Medford, Crescent City, or Eureka, then drive scenic Highway 101.
🥾 Don’t Miss:
•Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail – classic, easy loop with massive trees
•Fern Canyon – lush, Jurassic-looking canyon (permit required in summer)
•Tall Trees Grove – remote and magical hike deep in the forest
•Jedediah Smith Redwoods – home to some of the park’s most impressive giants

Best time to visit? Late spring through early fall for clear weather — though the foggy mornings are part of the magic.

The Kaymoor Mine Trail in New River Gorge is one of those hikes that perfectly blends history and adventure. It drops you straight into the story of the old coal mining days — with nearly 800 steps leading down to the remains of the Kaymoor Mine and processing plant hidden deep in the gorge. It’s definitely a leg burner coming back up, but totally worth it for the views, the eerie quiet of the forest, and the feeling of walking through a piece of West Virginia history.

Distance: ~3.6 miles round trip
Elevation gain: ~800 feet
Rated: Strenuous (those stairs!)
