My go-to's from COS straddle extremes: the most everyday basics AND standout design pieces. The button-ups and the tailored coats have thoughtful materials and construction that'll stay looking sharp wear after wear. The long-sleeve tees in modern variegated stripes? Love them as a quick update, and I would not spend more. Plus COS' quality for tees consistently delivers. That red coat is excellent for fall and will be that outfit-making star come spring.

Chanel taught a master class in styling red. Mix your reds so it's dimensional, not matchy-matchy. Use different textures. Pair with khakis. The result is chic as ever, and it's testament to the timelessness of these accessories.

Chanel's upcoming spring collection showed a few styling ideas I'll wear now, for fall. Pastel adds a pop of romantic optimism to khakis, and the khakis ground the pastel so it looks sharp enough for any meeting. J.Crew Cosmo pants: I sized down to XS, and my jeans size is 26.

There's a reason The Row's barn jacket looks so good: it's modeled after J.Crew's time-tested classic. We know people who wear them. We've seen glimpses of it in pop culture. Yes, The Row does have crisper corners, but I'd rather save that precision for dressier pieces and go with the right balance of casual vs. precise. J.Crew, Uniqlo, COS, and Mango deliver for me. The Uniqlo jacket has smaller proportions, and the M worked for me better than the S. I sized down with J.Crew to XS.

After comparing these sweaters in person, reviewing and wearing Quince for years, getting your feedback about Jenni Kayne, my conclusion is that they're comparable in terms of softness and wear. Jenni's sweaters have a more generous cut. Quince is still oversized and looks cool to me, and I prefer to save up for shoes rather than basics.

I wear the Quince cotton sweater this time of year. It's oversized but doesn't add bulk. I sized up for the cashmere tee – I usually wear a small, but mine's a medium. I shave my cashmere once a season, and it stays looking smooth after the shave better than when it was new. I wear the suede loafers a few times a week. Super comfortable because of the cushioned insole and smooth lining (I'm sensitive to thick seams and harsh edges, and these I wear without socks). I'll also include pieces I reviewed in the carousel below: the $225 wool-cashmere coat, the $350 camel hair coat, and the sweaters that stay smoother, plus the one silk blouse with a flat armhole seam. Skip the $175 Italian wool coat, the $50 crewneck, the baby cashmere, and the lace. I do enjoy the cashmere crewneck cardigan even though it’s the $50 sweater’s cousin – I scrunch up the sleeves, and it overall looks dainty on purpose. I de-pill once a season with an old school razor. Don’t use a cashmere comb – it made my pilling worse. SWEATERS IN POST: 1. The Quince Italian Suede Penny loafer is very comfortable, so I'm including its cousin with the tassel. I have the tassel loafers from Black Suede Studio, so it's a moment that I support. I'm also including a Stuart Weitzman loafer that's 33% off at the bottom.

Soft leather, thin soles, no hardware: the loafers and slippers I'm wearing all fall, plus animal print on a shape that fits the foot instead of ballooning, and boots that sit close to the leg. The tassel is the one moment I'd ride this season.

Uniqlo's cashmere resists pilling, J.Crew's is now Grade-A (incredibly soft; longevity to be seen), COS outclasses pricier knits with fewer styles, and Nordstrom's is thinner than Uniqlo's. N.Peal is a step up from the mall brands, and Johnston's of Elign is even more luxurious. Those are sweaters you buy for decades and pass on to the next generations. I'm 5'7", and I'm usually size S.
