For the longest time running was my only form of cardio. Flashback to just over a year ago now and I hurt my knee. I had a Doctor who leveled with me. I could rehab and get back to running and my body would continue to degrade and I may get another 5 to 7 years of running. Or I could slow down and switch gears and take up cycling.
