It was this time last year that I was heading to the mountains with Mr. WTW and we were setting goals for the months ahead. Little did I know how different my life would look in a years time. I know this because I pulled up my (digital) journal that I’ve been keeping for years. Do you keep one too? Some days have more extensive writings, others just snippets of thoughts. Doing this has helped me sort through ideas and come back to check on my goals. Other times it’s just nice to look back on trips with the happiest memories. Paris is one of those places I have written about and each trip I take makes me fall more in love with the city. Each trip I’ve picked up little mementoes, one I wear on a necklace almost daily. It probably won’t surprise you that I make fast friends on trips and talk to anyone I’m sitting next to. Airplanes. Restaurants. Museums. Wherever. The life stories, advice, and recommendations that come from this can give mental foundations to build stronger memories and ties for an area.

As much as I enjoy traveling to big cities, I’ll forever be the girl from a small town in Florida who loves the charm of a quaint area. While I often leave big cities energized and excited, I find that most often when I leave a small town I leave refreshed and relaxed. How about you?

On my last solo night in Paris I wanted to do something I’d never forget. So I booked a ticket for a small concert held at Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It’s considered the oldest church in Paris and just one street over from the famed Cafe de Flore. Now Vivaldi and Schubert meet to bring you a night of magic under the cobalt vaulted ceilings.

I chose to walk back to my hotel that night and enjoyed every minute of it. This is the thing about Paris. Magic is around every corner and it’s one of the best cities to explore. The city is beautiful by day and at night it twinkles all around.

One of the best tips I can give for any traveler is to book one thing special like this. I love finding a ballet, opera or concert but also venture to the skies and take helicopter rides. You might find this hard to believe, but I was extremely shy when I was younger. So the first time I ate at a communal table in a restaurant I was thrown off. Honestly, it took me a while to get used to this concept. I couldn’t tell you exactly when this feeling changed, but it was around the time I saw the movie “About A Boy”.

It begins with the quote “No man is an island” and the rest of the movie is spent showing just how lonely life would be as an island. We are meant to be social and I’ve come to love and appreciate the communal aspects of life.

Last night I asked for your help in deciding on a dress to wear as a wedding guest. I’m still wading through a sea of messages, and the most beautiful part of it all has been the conversations that sparked from this. One particular message came from Sweden and the ensuing conversation really was so lovely and made my day.

It’s been on my mind since that we have an opportunity and luxury to talk to people all around the world. I wonder how much of this novelty will be lost on future generations and what pieces of convenience I take for granted daily. Pop quiz: but what convenience are you most thankful for today? Hint: there are no wrong answers.

What do you actually want for Mother’s Day? It was the question we’d ask my mom after her reply to our first inquiry was “obedient children”. Her request might have made it easier on my wallet, but it meant that for at least a day I had to mind my p’s and q’s.

Fast forward thirty years and she still uses this same reply, though we’ve been able to wheedle out a few things actually does want. Or perhaps we’ve gotten to know her better as adults.
