I swear there is a reason for this story…In second grade, a girl named Petunia (not actually her real name, but I digress) sneezed while simultaneously farting. Of course it was during a quiet moment in class and everyone heard it. Subsequently, we all fell into giggles but thankfully our teacher reigned that in quickly. The following year “P” didn’t return to our school and there will always be a part of me that feels like our childish outburst might’ve added to that change in schools. That was almost thirty years ago yet I remember it vividly. Does she? Today I understand the absolute horror and mortification a young kid would feel being in that situation. Let alone a girl who was sweet and newer to the school. I recalled this story after having a conversation with my sister about the speculations and hype surrounding Kate Middleton. How awful it would feel to be the center of attention as a kid who had something embarrassing happen, let alone a whole world looking in and making assumptions about your private life as you’re trying to survive in the fish bowl. Lately, it’s stopped me in my tracks whenever I think about adding to a narrative that isn’t my own. Mostly because I’ve been wondering how I would feel in the midst of speculation. Especially if it’s something I’d like to keep private. But also because my mom was right. If I have nothing nice to say, why bother saying anything at all. It’s weird to mix farts and introspection but here we are. My mom would also tell me never to use the “f” word (fart haha), but clearly that advice didn’t take. Whats a piece of advice your mom gave you that you now use? #LTKGala #LTKFestival
