There is a term in photography coined by Henri Cartier-Bresson called the decisive moment. It’s the point at which the viewer recognizes significance and tension within a moment to capture. It’s the precise second before the splash as a runner encounters a puddle. Or the joy that is seen before it’s felt in an embrace between old friends. He used this moment to create a unique form of narrative through pictures and it’s remained one of the most valuable lessons I learned in college. A lesson that came back to mind in my early thirties. I was living about a block away from the Gulf in Destin and most everyday I’d get up to watch the sunrise. It dawned on me that behind the decisive moment, just before the wave crashed, there was a whole process that brought the wave there. This wasn’t a new thought unique to me, but this was the moment I understood its importance and changed my perspective. It’s easy to miss the journey the water takes to become a wave. Or to forget that there is a whole world living below the crash. If you’re looking at someone else’s decisive moment, whether it’s good or bad, I hope we can think about this unknown and unseen factor to provide grace or remove envy.
