As I thought about travel prep for trips, I tried to break down the most relevant things I practice to this day. Before traveling, you need to think about the "3 P's": 1. Packing, 2. Planning, 3. Plane. If you can master those (as a parent), your trip will be a success!
Packing: Keep it MINIMAL. Aim for LESS. Fewer suitcases. Less stuff. Use packing cubes — one per child. Mom gets to bring the most stuff, period! Don't forget the Pepto-Bismol!
Planning: ALWAYS create an itinerary. With a big family, THIS IS A MUST. Even if we don't stick to the plan, it's nice to have one. Print it and laminate!

Plane: 11 years of being a mom, and we have mastered the plane. I don't even wince getting onto planes. It's confidence, but it's also strategy. Bring snackle boxes, and for us, we allow gaming (ONLY ON THE PLANE).

What it takes to have a big family, PART 2. Holy moly. Our days are full. But, I love full. Full means you built something you now have to work to maintain. And the working part. The being productive with my life, working hard to do the things I love ... feels like it's what it's all about.

Do I wonder what a calm life would be like? Sometimes. Do I wish a calm life were my life? I wonder. But deep down, I know (it sounds crazy) this is the kind of life that makes me happy.

Being a mom is a mission. And having five kids immediately puts you on one. Almost as if I can do more because of them. Not just directly through them, but through many other aspects of my life. As if my kids, each one of them, have expanded my capacity for living... and doing.

Days are not perfect. Trust me. But they're full. And they're fun. And they're ours.

Do you have what it takes to have a big family?
Honestly? I never thought I would. I grew up in a 2-child family and assumed I'd have the same. Then I started having babies, and it was the most miraculous experience of my life. But that alone doesn't make someone want five.
So what does?
I think it comes down to personality. The hardwiring of the parents. Me and my husband — and most big-family parents I've met — share a few traits, and I'll just say them plainly:
→ You're okay pushing against norms. (You literally are one.)
→ You're okay being uncomfortable. The more kids, the more there is to manage.
→ You like being challenged constantly — organization, logistics, giving time to each kid, finding creative solutions society won't hand you.
→ You're not chasing margin. You're not optimizing for rest, or quiet, or time alone to just be.
If you want a calmer, more restful life — a big family probably isn't for you. And that's not a judgment. That's just real.
The thing I love most about it is the family unit. There's less individualism (which has its pros and cons — less 1:1 time, for sure), but the togetherness is unmatched. The pack-of-them energy. The way the older ones raise the younger ones. The fact that no one is ever lonely in this house.
It's not for everyone. But for the woman it IS for? There's nothing else like it.

One year in our Texas home 🤍
And almost one year with Cal.

I still remember the day we bought this house—it felt monumental. Like… we did it.
I couldn’t believe it was ours.

But truthfully, I didn’t think much about what came next.

At first, I planned to bring all of our furniture from Virginia.

Comment “SPORTS” to get my favorite sports mom gear! I actually need to snag some of this myself…

I’m definitely in my travel sports mom era. It hit me when my boys started playing travel soccer in 2nd grade. My first thought: Am I REALLY doing this to MYSELF? To my FAMILY? The money. The family dinners lost. The anxiety of getting there on time (trust me, I’m always late). The constant go, go, go.

I had seasons of rebelling. Questioning the validity of youth sports. The seriousness of it all - not to mention the questionable refs, coach calls, playing time, losing streaks, heartbreaks, gas costs, and everything that comes with living out of your car.

When it came down to it, there are many things about youth sports, especially travel, that I hate. And honestly, I still hate. But you know what? There’s more about it that I love. And maybe one day on my death bed I’ll shake my hand in the air and roll my eyes at those “wasted years.” But the irony is… I think I’ll miss it.

I really have given this thought. And I do believe kids, especially at a young age, need something to work toward. They need ownership of whatever that is (still working on passing that ownership button from us to them). I want my boys to understand what it means to struggle. What it means to compete. That life isn’t fair. That playing time isn’t a given. That you don’t always win. That sometimes the new player beats you out. That boring practices still matter. That you still show up when the game doesn’t go your way. That you push through the “I don’t want to do this.”

Because this is the stuff that builds resilience. Character. Grit. The ability to stay when things get uncomfortable. And no, it’s not perfect. But I’d rather my kids learn how to work hard for something that matters than drift through something easy.

Loving you through the wins, supporting you in the losses, sitting with you on the long drives and cheering you on in the late nights — and teaching you that effort matters more than comfort. I love you. And this? This is my sports mom era.

But… Dating your husband? It’s something my own parents always told me mattered. And after we had our second son—when they noticed life starting to slip away from us—they stepped in and treated us to a few date nights, including a babysitter. Looking back, that gift meant more than they probably realized.

Since then, we’ve added three more babies… and my parents stopped treating us (fair enough). But what that season taught me has stayed with me.

Let me be clear when I say this: there have been seasons when I have not dated my husband—and seasons when I still don’t—pregnancy fatigue. Newborn exhaustion. Breastfeeding. The logistics of five kids. Finding a sitter. Running a business. Trying to remember who I am again. Life, as parents, has a way of getting in the way. Add a baby, and dating your husband can easily fall to the bottom of the list.

And I’ve come to believe this deeply: in some seasons, that’s okay.

Because often, the inability to date your husband isn’t really about the date—it’s about the season you’re in. It’s about being so needed by everyone else that you temporarily lose sight of yourself. And that absence, that searching, can be part of the process.

But there is a moment—quietly, gradually—when you begin to find yourself again. And when that happens, I hope you find him too. Because choosing yourself again often leads you right back to the relationship that started it all.

You are worth that return.

Surprising my boys with a John Cena WWE match meant an early morning, lots of logistics, and all the right staples to make it smooth.

Wearing my go-to Free People Going Places cardi, denim vest, and comfortable travel pants — easy layers for long days.
Packed everything in our quilted carryall + 3-piece suitcase set (a must when traveling with kids).
Comfort is non-negotiable, so I lived in these high-waisted leggings and basic tees.

For the baby: our trusted UPPAbaby Vista stroller and lightweight infant car seat — makes airport travel actually manageable.
And yes, the Bose Bluetooth speaker was essential for playing John Cena’s entrance music for the surprise moment.
