(Trigger warning: birth trauma) Motherhood. Where I’ve experienced my highest highs and the lowest lows. It’s hard for me going into Mother’s Day weekend not thinking of my first Mother’s Day 2 years ago which was horrible. We’d been home from the hospital for 2 days and I was in rough shape. I couldn’t walk, was bleeding, and trying to care for a newborn while grappling with the fact that I’d almost lost my life delivering him. He was borderline jaundice and we had to go in for blood tests daily. As we were leaving the house, we realized our tiny dog had eaten a good amount of dark chocolate. So, an emergency vet trip, a stomach pump, and many tears later, we headed to the lab for Arlo, but they’d sent us to one that was closed on Sundays. I was being wheeled all around the hospital by my husband looking like death (still very pale from birth blood loss) and the lab nurse there even asked if I was OK. It was a day for the books. Our story has a happy ending, but my therapist reminded me not to gloss over the worst parts of motherhood, because they are part of the journey too, and to heal, you can’t ignore them as part of your experience. Here’s to the good, the bad, the amazing, and the terrifying that is motherhood. It’s different for all of us, and I know there are so many women who have lost mothers, babies, or spent ages trying to become mothers that this weekend may be especially difficult for.
