Coffee at @themarket_kc after I dropped Arlo off at preschool. He’s started going 3 mornings a week and is loving it.

It’s so weird not having him with me every second, but it’s good for us both, and it’s so exciting to be tackling new and exciting creative ventures! I have the best news for your hair! @beauty.brands is now carrying @livingproofinc and the hype is true. This stuff is life-changing! I mean, have you ever seen my fine hair full of so much volume? 😍 In my 33 years of life, I have not.

I used the PhD 5-1 Styling Treatment, the PhD Heat Styling Spray, and the PhD Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo
and the result was pure magic.

The most trip-related questions I had were regarding our 32 hours of driving time with a 2 year old, which actually went really well! So, I’m rounding up everything that worked well here.

✨Car seat tray: this must-have was perfect for drawing and activities and had a cup holder and spot for markers. It also has a tablet sleeve with a stand.

✨MagnaDoodle: probably his favorite new activity. He constantly asked for his “drawing pad.”

✨Mr. Potato Head: He’d never seen one before the trip. He spent so much time playing with it!

✨Scratch pads and one-color marker books. Hit up the Target $1 section for these. He did all the pages in all the books!

✨Seek-and-find books. He had so much find with a new dino book, I should have gotten him more I Spy type books!

✨New books and sticker sheets! Just prepare for everything to be covered in stickers.

TIPS
✨Use one activity bag for the way there and a new one for the way back, it’ll keep everything new and fresh!

✨Wrap activities like presents. The best bribe for getting him back in the car seat after a stop was getting a present. Thomas the Train mini trains were the biggest hit!

✨Pre-load your tablet. Load up shows and movies on different apps. Our Disney app stopped working due to an app update, so we had no access to anything we’d downloaded on there. Luckily we had shows on other apps saved too. Overall, he only spent about 2 of the 36 hours on a tablet. Be very careful on windy or hilly roads. Reserve it for open, flat highways or deal with the carsick consequences 😳

✨Get melatonin gummies: a recommendation from our mail carrier who had just done a Florida trip too. The @ollywellness kids kind are just .5 mg of melatonin, just enough to help a bit when he was overtired.

✨Pack tons of protein and fiber filled snacks. Homemade trail mix was the biggest hit!

✨Hit up garage sales and consignment sales and shops for toys, books and stickers so you don’t break the bank!

Warm days and cool waves. ☀️🌊Our first couple of days in Florida have been so fun! Arlo was terrified of the water yesterday and couldn’t get enough today. We found a few moments of sun amongst the rain this weekend to get out and explore! We had lunch at @pigwichkc at @citymarketkc in @rivermarketkc. (Trigger warning: birth trauma) Motherhood. Where I’ve experienced my highest highs and the lowest lows. It’s hard for me going into Mother’s Day weekend not thinking of my first Mother’s Day 2 years ago which was horrible. We’d been home from the hospital for 2 days and I was in rough shape. I couldn’t walk, was bleeding, and trying to care for a newborn while grappling with the fact that I’d almost lost my life delivering him. He was borderline jaundice and we had to go in for blood tests daily. As we were leaving the house, we realized our tiny dog had eaten a good amount of dark chocolate. So, an emergency vet trip, a stomach pump, and many tears later, we headed to the lab for Arlo, but they’d sent us to one that was closed on Sundays. I was being wheeled all around the hospital by my husband looking like death (still very pale from birth blood loss) and the lab nurse there even asked if I was OK. It was a day for the books. Our story has a happy ending, but my therapist reminded me not to gloss over the worst parts of motherhood, because they are part of the journey too, and to heal, you can’t ignore them as part of your experience. Here’s to the good, the bad, the amazing, and the terrifying that is motherhood. It’s different for all of us, and I know there are so many women who have lost mothers, babies, or spent ages trying to become mothers that this weekend may be especially difficult for.
