Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult is a powerful novel about race, bias, privilege, and the assumptions we carry, sometimes without even realizing it. Told through multiple perspectives, it challenges readers to consider how seemingly ordinary choices and interactions can reveal much larger inequalities, without offering easy answers or reducing its characters to simple categories. Reading it, I kept thinking about Dolly’s “Coat of Many Colors”: the reminder that worth has never been found in sameness, status, or what the world sees on the surface. Dolly spent a lifetime showing that kindness, dignity, and love can cross every divide. The world is a little less colorful without her in it.
