A couple days ago I shared a reel where I talked about where I budget things for the house. Yes, I believe in budgeting.🤯

This morning, it occurred to me that the areas I splurge on are the workhorses. What gets used the absolute most and could, potentially, take a beating? I am not a fan of replacing things multiple times… even if it means I could sell it before I replace it. It’s still a loss, the time it takes to list something, manage those horrible FB Marketplace transactions. It’s a nightmare. I will hold out until I have saved for a really well made sectional, or a high-end plumbing fixture. For me, those things aren’t splurges, but areas to invest in, knowing that they’ll last.

Kitchen elements that were a splurge (unnecessary & expensive) but also necessary for my design…

Someone once said to me: “I wouldn’t call you cheap, I’d call you a strategic spender.”

I shop sales, buy refurbished but drive a nice car and have kids in private schools. I am VERY picky about where I spend my money. I don’t care about labels… but I like nice things. I’ll splurge when necessary… ie my kitchen! 🤑Who’s with me?

On that note, I feel like IKEA gets a bad rap… like once we reach a certain tax bracket we should no longer buy IKEA and instead pay for custom pieces only?!? Eff that!!!

I worked with @ModernTwigLA to spruce up my IKEA Besta units… saying ✌🏼 to the generic white fronts and swapped those out for a real wood version. These walnut fronts and top are so lovely! It would have cost twice as much to get something custom made for this 13’ wall… and your girl ain’t about that!

Patterned tile can be a bit overwhelming… there are endless options for how to layout the pieces. Again, you want it to feel balanced.

Before ordering these @concretecollaborative x @sarahshermansamuel tiles, I made a full layout in InDesign… this helped me in ordering the correct amount of each pattern. HOWEVER that design went totally out the window and I came up with a new one right before install. Trusted my gut, didn’t overthink it too much and made sure it felt balanced yet playful.

When it comes to design, and I suppose life, in general, it’s all about balance! A lot of people can be afraid to use color, pattern, and maybe even texture in a space as prominent in the house as a kitchen. Typically a small powder room is a “safe space“ to take some big risks. But I say, in the iconic words of Sheryl Crow “If it makes you happy, I can’t be that bad.”

I balance busyness like the wallpaper or island tile with minimalism. The black tile on my cooking wall, is grouted with black to downplay that area. It offers just a hint of texture versus additional pattern.

The continuous flow of the walnut grain in the cabinetry, while visually very appealing, also lends itself to a bit of minimalism. If the grain were broken up and not continuous, or I would say even vertical instead of horizontal, it would not be as pleasing to the eye, and would be more of a pattern than a flow. Keep in mind that we read left to right, at least in this country, and our eyes are next to one another versus on top of each other.

When it comes to using more than one color, my rule of either going complementary or analogous is a safe bet! The muted blue with the mustard yellow, feels harmonious against all of the neutrals in the space. These colors are also very era appropriate and do not feel out of space in my 1962 home.

In the end, if you’re paying the mortgage, do whatever the fuck you want because if it makes you happy, I can’t be that bad 🤣

I’m not professionally trained on lighting but here’s what I like for lighting schemes in a kitchen…

💡Main light - island lighting generally, as a chandelier or pendants, cooler… 4000°K is my temp preference & 2400-3200lm 🤓
💡Mood lighting - dimmable, warmer at least two of them…
💡Light it like an airport just incase… aka recessed lights - Dimmable, enough for the room… overhead on the edge of task areas. I rarely turn these on but they seem necessary and I always overthink the layout.

My fav element in this kitchen isn’t any of the tile, the cabinets or the appliances.

It is the SKYLIGHTS!

Light is transformative… we take vitamin d supplements because it can affect our mood and health. It was a no brainer to add skylights above the island and take this dark, sad kitchen to bright & happy status. There are a handful of Velux “No Leak” skylights we’ve added over the years… it has NEVER been an issue that we didn’t put them in at the same time as a new roof.

MYTH.

Loading my jumbo island with plants has been my fav bonus to the skylights.

When I started collecting mid century modern pieces it was such a rush… especially when I found something special AND cheap! My trick was to co tact people on Craigslist who didn’t put photos in the listings. It was how I scored my Broyhill Premier pieces for less than it costs to fill a car up with gas 🤣

This piece was one I bought for my 31st birthday. It was a whopping $550… that was expensive for me back then. Over the years, I’ve used it in many different ways. In the boys “playroom”, my family room, sales room and office. It’s not unusually rare, I am sure a lot of you have the same piece! I would love to see how YOU have styled it! Listen… I followed the lead of the original owner when designing this kitchen. I didn’t choose the Bimini Blue tile in the entry or the clear cedar statement wall. Those glorious choices were made in the ‘60s and I am honored to elevate that and give the psychedelic 60s the tribute it deserves.

I am not a simple and safe kinda girl. I CAN design that way but I am more of a subtract the extra then slowly add in layers.

A modern kitchen with client’s adjective requests of: earthy, minimal, and warm.

My goal was to bring the outdoors in, as their 1940s home sits on a wooded lot that is the real star of the property. By using zellige tiles, that have a lovely high variance of warm and cool greens, the landscape is brought inward and blends seamlessly with the space. On paper, it is a bold choice but *actually* feels quite subtle once installed!
