A little shortcut that really helped me figure out my personal style. Sometimes you do not actually know what you like until you see it. Inspiration can be a really useful starting point when you feel a bit stuck. We are often told to look at fashion magazines, celebrities, or “it girls” for style ideas. The problem is that most of those references are very trend driven, so their look changes all the time. That can make it hard to build a wardrobe that actually lasts. You can look at classic style icons, of course, but there is not always that much material to study, and their lives and lifestyles were very different to ours. What worked much better for me was finding a TV show where I genuinely loved the styling. For me, it was Suits. The women are dressed in a very timeless way, but they all have distinct personal styles. It gave me a wide range of looks to take inspiration from without it feeling messy or confusing. I pulled neutrals and beautiful fabrics from Jessica, more fitted silhouettes from Donna, and simple tucked-in shirts from Rachel. That became the base of my wardrobe. From there, I started building a capsule that actually felt like me. It has evolved over time, but that original foundation is still there.
