When I was 20, I had no real concept of what being in my 40s meant. Anything past mid-30s just sat in my mind as one vague category; Old. Not something to aim for. Not something to think about. More just the point where life tapered off. Part of that was what we were shown. Women in their 40s on TV looked like they had opted out. Grey hair, practical clothes, no sense of identity beyond being “past it.” So of course it felt undesirable. Why would you look forward to something that looked like an ending? The reality is very different. Most women are only just starting to figure out who they are in their 40s. Careers stabilise. Standards get sharper. Decisions get better. - The majority of female startup founders are between 40-45 years old. - Most self made female millionaires are between 40-60. - Women’s self acceptance, confidence and life satisfaction is at its peak in midlife. The timelines we were shown were wrong. You’re not supposed to have it all figured out at 25. You’re not “late” at 35. And you’re definitely not finished at 40. If anything, that’s where things really start getting interesting. I really wish I know what I know now then. I would have been a lot more excited about getting older.
