Sanding might not be the most glamorous part of flipping… but it’s exactly what makes your finish look professional — whether you’re staining or painting. Today we’re breaking down everything you actually need to know: 🪵 Grits explained — low grits remove old finish, medium smooth it out, and higher grits prep the surface. Most flips only need up to 220! 🎨 For stain — 180–220 grit is the sweet spot. Anything higher burnishes the wood and leads to blotchy stain. 🖌️ For paint — don’t skip the scuff sand! A quick pass with 180–220 gives your paint/primer something to grip onto. 🔧 Tools — orbitals, detail sanders, foam pads… and why I use my SurfPrep 3×4 for both flat surfaces and curves. 📏 Veneer vs solid wood — how to tell the difference (and why sanding veneer requires a very gentle hand). If you’ve ever felt lost on where to start with sanding, I hope this helps you feel way more confident going into your next flip! 🤎 Tell me what you want next in the Furniture Flipping 101 series — staining? priming? painting? furnitureflipping101 furnitureflip diyfurniture furniturerestoration woodworkingbasics sanding101 thriftflip beforeandafter fliphut LTKHome LTKvlog LTKGiftGuide
