I’m just so excited I could finally give the laundry room the attention it really deserved.

A moment for Leslie, the crown jewel of the laundry room.

If you’ve been here for a minute you know that lighting is one of my favorite elements when it comes to designing spaces. Just like hardware is jewelry for the room, I think of lighting as artwork for the ceiling. This particular light, the Leslie Flushmount from @lighting_design_company has been on my bingo card for years. I had originally planned to put it in my dressing room four years ago. Last year I almost ordered it for my home office. But this year, when I started designing the laundry room I just knew this was the space for this light.

I’ve always thought it looked a little bit like a crown, and with how romantic the laundry room design is, I think it’s absolutely perfect. I’m sharing more stills on AllisonSkiff.com today, as well as diving into what else I have left to do (we’re not quite done yet!).

There’s this weird shame that exists around buying used. Like somehow it means you couldn’t afford the alternative. But the people asking where my things came from aren’t asking because something looks cheap. They’re asking because nothing in my house looks like everything else.

You can’t replicate that by shopping new. You just can’t. A room full of things with a history feels completely different than a room full of things that came in a box. And once you figure that out it kind of ruins you for shopping any other way.

Estate sales, Facebook Marketplace, the occasional antique store. That’s where so many pieces in my rooms are sourced from.

Anyone else used to feel weird about it and now can’t shut up about where everything came from?

I finally figured out why some homes just feel cool and calm in the summer. Plants. That’s literally it.

Recently I walked into @samsclub , saw the @costafarms summer drop, and could not walk past the prices. I have genuinely paid three times more for the same plants at other stores!

I grabbed a few that caught my eye, brought them home, and started styling them throughout the house. A pair by the fireplace. The monstera in the dining room by the window where you can see the trees outside. A trailing pink and green one on an antique silver tray next to a stack of books. Every spot felt cooler and calmer the second a plant landed there.

If you’ve had bad luck with plants before, this is a low-risk way to try again. They were so lush in person, I was genuinely surprised. This drop sells out fast though, so go check your Sam’s Club now. Ps - you can have them delivered too! 🌿

When I found out I could skip the dry cleaners and get the same results at home, I essentially designed an entire room around it!

Over the past month I’ve been transforming my storageless laundry room into a room that actually works, complete with floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets I built myself and my LG Styler from @loweshomeimprovement It dry cleans, sets creases in pants, and even has a little shelf that’s perfect for storing estate sale finds like decorative pillows.
