Every September, the sun hits my kitchen at an angle that only lasts about two weeks.

It catches the edges of the cabinetry and kitchen table and turns the whole room almost amber. My first instinct is always to start pulling down Grannie’s Franciscan Apple and reaching for the heavier pieces, getting everything staged and ready for crisp mornings.

Then I catch myself.

The Canonsburg Ironstone Gold will still be waiting in the cupboard when fall officially comes. For tonight, I am leaving the stacks right where they are, slicing late tomatoes for supper, and enjoying the in-between light.

Dining room views

When I first started decorating with heirlooms, I wanted to honor everything…but ended up overwhelmed, unsure, and afraid I’d get it wrong.

Through trial and error (and a whole lot of rearranging), I found a way to decorate with confidence by layering my home with meaning, not just stuff.

These are the three mistakes that taught me how to become the Storykeeper my home deserves.

1. Hiding Sentimental Pieces Because They Felt “Off Style” - I kept heirlooms tucked away because they didn’t fit a Pinterest-perfect aesthetic. Now? They’re the soul of my home.

2. Thinking It All Had to “Match” - I tried to make everything match, and the meaning got lost in the process. When I stopped styling for cohesion and started styling for connection, everything changed.

3. Overthinking form the Fear of Getting It “Wrong” - I second-guessed every decision and was afraid of clutter, afraid of doing it “wrong,” and unsure where to even start.

For me, joy is built in the small, intentional moments. Walking into a room I love. Flipping on my grandmother’s chandelier for added warmth. Tending to something beautiful…even if it’s just grocery store orchids I arranged yourself.

My grannie started collecting this Homer Laughlin Majestic Brittany china pattern long before I was old enough to appreciate it. She picked it because of my name…her way of building something just for me, piece by piece, before I even knew what it meant. Now every time I set a table with them, I feel her with me.

Some people unwind with a glass of wine. I unwind by pulling out the good dishes and making something ordinary feel special.

Y’all, I didn’t have a dish problem. I had a storage problem. 😅

So I built my dish pantry. And now it’s basically where all my stories live. Vintage charm, heirloom memories, and a little bit of “too much” (but in the best way). Some were collected at estate sales and thrift shops. Some were inherited from women who taught me that gathering matters. And some were gifts from people who enable my obsession. All of them are staying.

And that commitment is to me.

Not because I don’t love the people in my life. But because a quiet night at home, tending to my space and my peace and surrounded by my memories, IS the commitment sometimes.

When I saw my house for the first time, it was when I was shopping the estate sale after its previous owner passed away.

I fell in love with many many things about the house. And I definitely loved the original yellow tiles. Because it’s currently the main bathroom until I hopefully one day add on a larger bathroom for me, I want it to be pretty, guest-ready, but functional for me!

I switched out the vanity for a larger one, replaced the vanity lights for better glow, hung a vintage bamboo mirror, and added some great art and other pieces that could withstand the bathroom environment. But I’ve always envisioned a wallpaper that tied the yellow tile in!

@artscape_design_studio ‘s Cosmos completely transform the space. It’s even more happy and vibrant than it was before. I chose traditional paste the wall since it’s a bathroom occasionally humidity.

This little corner gets rearranged and revamped often throughout the year to showcase some of my favorite things, but it always tells the story of how I have been loved and cared for.

Some heirlooms aren’t originally family pieces. They’re chosen…piece by piece, with love.

My grandmother started collecting these Homer Laughlin Majestic Brittany plates for me long before I was old enough to appreciate them. She accumulated quite a lot for me! She probably imagined me using them at my wedding, setting a table for a new chapter, the way women before me had done with their fine china.

But life unfolded differently. And I truly love the life I have.

So instead of waiting for a traditional occasion, I gave them a place where I see them every day. Some on a gallery wall in my dining room, others mixed in with my mom’s Kings Crown Ruby and my grandmother’s Haviland Apple Blossom.

Oh, and the pattern? She picked it just for me…her “Brittany.”

I think it’s time I set a big banquet table with them and throw a shindig, celebrating the life I have.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned about living well at home is this: rituals matter. Not as a means to an end, but as a way of paying attention to the life we’re living right now.

Rituals aren’t about making life look pretty or perfect. They simply help us *experience* it more fully and more beautifully.

As Alexandra Stoddard so beautifully wrote: “Rituals and details are not ends but steppingstones, tools to aid us in the enjoyment of the actual process of living as fully and creatively as we possibly can.”

I’ve learned that when I honor the current season and choose not rush past it, my home becomes a place of dignity, vitality, and joy.

Lighting the candle because it makes things look cozier. Using my “good dishes” for a regular weeknight meal because today is worth celebrating.
Really, just letting small habits reinforce what I value most.

“Living well is a habit,” Alexandra reminds us, “and rituals improve and reinforce good life habits.”

And that’s why this matters. A life well-lived is more than just the grand gestures. It’s shaped by the daily ones.

Thanksgiving Tablescape Tuesday – Week 4
 If I had to pick a favorite from the Thanksgiving Tablescape series, this might be it. There’s just something about green, amber, and candlelight that feels like Thanksgiving to me.

This table layers sentimental pieces from the women who came before me… Grannie’s Johnson Brothers Friendly Village dishes, Mema’s turkey figurines, and Mama’s gold-rimmed glassware. These pieces share the spotlight alongside my own favorites: a green block print tablecloth, Bordallo Pinheiro lemon leaf chargers, and woven placemats.

The centerpiece is a magnolia wreath framing a stone fruit topiary from @willowandpearls. The perfect mix of classic and Southern. Add in a glow from the candles, and it’s everything I love about this season: memory, warmth, and gratitude gathered around the table.
