It’s been a gorgeous week of Personal Styling this week (to be honest, it’s fabulous every week!) with a variety of appointments: two Gents’ Personal Styling appointments, one Online Styling appointment, one full day of prep for upcoming appointments and today sees one of my clients travel from Glasgow to see me to style her for her 50th birthday celebrations. Many of my clients travel to Manchester to see me for their appointments coming from Cumbria, Scotland, Cardiff, Dorset, Dublin, Surrey, Suffolk, Durham and the Midlands because distance is never a barrier to great style. I’ve been busy editing my own wardrobe recently and I decided I need a little refresh this season for both work and play. The initial focus has been on my work wardrobe as I’m wearing that most of the week. I also like separation between my work and off duty wardrobe so tackling each individually is my focus. Two new additions to freshen up my work wardrobe are this beautiful brushed cashmere tee and these pleated wide leg trousers. I’m really leaning into my love of tailoring right now, which is bringing me so much joy.

Despite being a Personal Stylist surrounded by clothes, when shopping for myself I follow the same considered approach that I teach my clients. It’s very rare I make a purchase on the spot as I prefer to ponder and think if a piece will work hard for me and my wardrobe. Shopping with intention and in a considered way means I have a small, but perfectly formed wardrobe that works really hard for me. I have items I love that I wear on repeat, as evidenced by these squares, and I keep my shopping habits to a minimum. That’s not to say I don’t have fun with my wardrobe - my purchases are considered, intentional but also bring me joy.

Good morning pocket pals! I am back in the fitting room all week this week as it’s peak season for Personal Styling appointments. This week sees a mixture of both Men’s and Women’s styling all with clients that I see on a seasonal or annual basis.

The beauty of working with clients on repeat is that you build up a lovely relationship that only strengthens their style confidence. They all have the tools to shop independently now, but they choose not to because they enjoy the whole experience of Personal Styling, it saves them both time and money and I always select pieces that they’d never choose for themselves. Factor in the self care element and the fun then why would you shop any other way?

Well, didn’t this look create a little frenzy on stories when I shared it yesterday? So, I thought it deserved a square of its own and also the story behind it…

You see I never planned to wear this look, it was something that I pulled together at the last minute after a crisis of confidence. I’d planned to wear a totally different outfit, I’d planned it out and it was ready to go but something didn’t feel right about it. So after a little play in my wardrobe I put this look together and it was the look I wore and felt good in.

As a Personal Stylist, I think there is the perception that I always know what to wear to every occasion. Don’t get me wrong, on most occasions that’s true but on this evening it wasn’t. I felt uneasy about the other look I had pre-selected, something just didn’t feel quite right. I started to critique myself and those of you that know me, or have followed me for a while, will know that self loathing is not something that’s acceptable. It’s never ok.

Cue a little wardrobe rummage, a quick styling session et voilà! This look was born.

When I’m working with my Personal Styling clients I am so decisive, my trained eye can scan an outfit and know it’s a winner or not straight away. I find it easy to create looks and be objective. But when it comes to my own wardrobe I can, sometimes, be my worst critic. My own worst enemy. We find it easy to see the flaws in ourselves, but only the wonderful parts of others. If you wouldn’t say it to your friend/sister/daughter then why is it acceptable to say it to yourself? It’s not. So be as kind to yourself as you would to others. Knock that self critical devil off your shoulder, look in the mirror and celebrate all that you are instead of focussing on all you think you’re not. Mind set and language are important tools for our self image. Use them wisely.

After fashion and style related questions, the most common questions are about my makeup and skin care routine.

I’m quite a simple creature when it comes to makeup as I don’t have the time, patience or skills for anything more than a quick ten minute natural look. Over the years I’ve found what products work for me and I stick with them. I’ve made too many mistakes buying into the latest cult makeup products that have then failed to deliver what I expected, so I stick with what I know and what works for me.

You see the skills, tips and tricks I teach you during any of my Personal Styling services are merely TOOLS, NOT RULES. You take from my advice and expertise what you think you need and leave behind what you don’t. Nothing is ever forced upon you, I’m simply here to guide you.

I always say to my Personal Styling clients that if they aim to follow the guidelines for dressing in their best colours and to flatter their body shape 80-90% of the time then they will be winning in the style stakes.

And that’s exactly how I operate too - my best colours 80-90% of the time and clothes to flatter my body shape to create a beautiful silhouette with balance and proportion 95% of the time. Tools not rules remember!

Personal styling isn’t a rigid set of rules that you must stick to at all costs, in fact that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s “personal” styling that’s tailored to you and your needs. Not a one size fits all approach.

September was the month of upgrading my work wardrobe and I’ve loved adding in more tailoring as it really appeals to my classic style personality. Imagine my delight when I found this fabulous jacket that perfectly matches my new pleated trousers and brushed cashmere sweater. I think it “needs” a home in my wardrobe!

Autumn is one of my favourite seasons for style. It’s that time of year where you can really play with layers, textures and deep, rich colours. A question I often ask my Personal Styling clients is do they prefer separation of their work and play wardrobes. Some prefer to mix and match for work and play across their whole wardrobe, whereas I prefer separation of the two. As much as I love my job as a Personal Stylist, I don’t want to be wearing the clothes I wear for work at the weekend - with the exception of a few pieces. There’s no right or wrong answer, so long as you make it work for you.

I had a little moment on Tuesday, a moment that my clients often experience in the fitting room. I absolutely LOVED my outfit! I felt incredible, it gave me swag and made me smile all day. I walked taller, had a spring in my step and a twinkle in my eye. The compliments flowed and I felt good. Really good.

You might be surprised to know that despite being a Personal Stylist that appears to ooze confidence, I’ve not always felt this way about myself. A few years ago I was seriously lacking in body confidence and struggled with my self image. And so I set to work to overcome these feelings. At times it wasn’t easy and even now my body confidence ebbs and flows, but I’ve realised that by growing in self confidence and self love, all areas of my life have been positively impacted.

So the point of this post is to say I get it. I truly do. I’ve been there and I believe that this is why I can share genuine empathy with those clients that feel the same.

So remember:
• You are enough, you are more than enough.
• It starts with you
• Hating your body won’t make you love it
• Speak to yourself with the same words you’d speak to your friends
• Self love costs nothing and you gain everything

There’s one colour that’s in EVERYONE’S WARDROBE and that’s the colour BLACK. I think this is because black feels like it’s always in style - it’s timeless.

DID YOU KNOW though that black isn’t flattering on most complexions, but especially those with a warm undertone. This is because black features only in the Winter palette when you use seasonal colour analysis. Winter, and consequently black, is cool and dark and it’s precisely this darkness that cause it to be unflattering on most people. Why I hear you cry?! Because the darkness of black creates shadows which deepen fine lines and wrinkles and make us look older than we are. Sorry, but it’s true and those of you that have had a Colour Analysis will know exactly what I’m talking about.

As a Personal Stylist, I’m here to advise you on how to look and feel your best. The advice I give is simply that, advice. Ultimately I’m all about building confidence, so if you have a black outfit and it gives you that confidence then own it - wear the outfit whether it suits you or not.

Interestingly, I often find after demonstrating how harsh black can be my clients make an active choice to avoid wearing black directly under their face. This is a decision they come to naturally.

Do I wear black? Yes! In fact my two of my most favourite outfits are black despite it not being my best colour but that’s because these outfits make me feel incredible and ultimately that’s how we should feel in our clothes.

So, if you’re worried that after a Colour Analysis black will be banished forever then fear not because I’ll guide you on “how not to wear black”.

Let’s talk trench coats 🧥

It’s definitely trench coat season and a trench can be a key piece in many wardrobes. You just can’t beat them, they are the ultimate between-seasons outerwear. From the traditional beige coloured double-breasted number, through to the on-trend cropped trench, there’s a trench coat for every body shape.

To ensure a great fit, and prevent you looking too swamped in fabric, you have to take careful account of the proportions and choose a shape to fit and flatter your body shape.

As a qualified Personal Stylist, here are a few of my top tips to ensure you make the perfect purchase when shopping for a trench:

1. TONE - is the colour the right shade for your skin tone?

2. LENGTH - will this work with skirts, trousers and dresses? And most importantly, where does the hem finish? The hem creates a horizontal line so you need to make sure this isn’t cutting through the widest part of your leg.

3. PRICE - a trench should be a piece that you invest as much as you can afford as it’s a classic that you’ll pull out year after year. Consider cost per wear when making your purchase.

4. FABRIC - traditional trench coat fabrics can be quite stiff which won’t work on any body shape with curves, irrespective of size. Curvy body types should choose fabrics that drape to show off the natural silhouette. Straighter body shapes can choose stiffer fabrics.

It’s been a truly versatile piece that I’ve worn all year round by switching up the footwear, accessories and outerwear. It’s probably one of the hardest working pieces in my wardrobe. If I’m ever unsure what to wear then this is one of the pieces that I reach for again and again. It’s a true wardrobe work horse.

Sunny days are my favourite days ☀️ I am having a real focus on self care right now so my time off work so far has consisted of the gym and Reformer Pilates with @jennyatkinson_pilates , dinner dates, time with friends and family, coffee and long lunches in the sunshine at @altymarket and @porta_alt I am especially enjoying mornings with no alarm to set. Today’s task is to finish my packing and get holiday ready.

As women we are expected to be all things to all people and without adequate steps for self care we end up burnt out and unhappy. This is why it’s important for us to factor in small self care steps into our regular routine. Maybe it’s reading a few pages of the book you’ve been meaning to finish, an uninterrupted bubble bath or perhaps it’s a simple as getting out in nature? For my clients their time with me in their Personal Styling appointment is their self care time. Whatever it is that you need to fill your cup make sure it’s a priority as you can’t pour from an empty cup.

A lovely first visit to @another_hand_mcr courtesy of one of my lovely clients as thank you for a special secret Chanel mission I carried out for him. I’d been wanting to visit this Mancunian gem for a little while as I’d heard so many good things, and it didn’t disappoint. Beautiful locally sourced produce and attentive service made for a wonderful evening - I will definitely be back.

Keeping it casual and shopping my wardrobe now I’m currently enjoying three weeks off. It’s been an incredible season of Personal Styling, Wardrobe Edits and Colour Analysis and AW25 is set to be the same, so it’s time to relax before it starts again at the end of the month.

I’ll be catching up with friends, spending time with my men and focussing on a little self care. The days will be filled with brunching, dog walks, gym sessions, Pilates, dinner and wine dates before I jet off for a little sunshine.

I’m back in the fitting room today with client who has previously had her Colour Analysis with me. She needs a whole new wardrobe and I’m very much looking forward to putting into practice everything I taught her about her colours alongside showing her how to dress her body shape and identifying style personality. This is my last Personal Styling appointment of the Spring/Summer season, the remainder of my week will be spent on Colour & Body Shape Consultations before I break for the Summer and rest before Autumn/Winter Personal Styling commences.

QUESTION… Do you dread Summer dressing? Does the thought of losing the layers fill you with trepidation? One of the main reasons I trained as a Personal Stylist is to make women and men feel good about themselves, gain confidence and feel like the best version of themselves.

I’m so passionate about my work as a Stylist because I have struggled so much throughout my life with my own body confidence. It’s taken me a long time to love the skin I’m in, and if I’m honest, it’s something I still work on most days. I also wanted to show the fashion industry that you don’t have to follow “the norm” to look good, have great style and understand fashion. Because style has no size. The more we normalise this industry with acceptance of all shapes and sizes the better.

Personal Styling IS for everyone - it’s for you and me, your brother or sister, your husband, your wife, your mum and dad. Please don’t ever feel like it’s not for you because it is. Every single one of my clients are exactly like you and I - every day normal people - and building their confidence through teaching them how to dress well is empowering to both them and me. Sam, like many, had wardrobes full of clothes but nothing to wear and was feeling overwhelmed by her wardrobe. Morning pocket pals! I’ve taken a few days off work to spend some time with one of my gorgeous gal pals in old London Town.

Day one consisted of a trip to @bondstreet for a spot of shopping and style inspiration. A must for us both when we meet up is always a trip to @victoriabeckham where there may, or may not, have been a little purchase made. Our second stop was @maxmara which is again a favourite of us both. A few items from the AW25 collection have been bookmarked for purchase at a later date, once the weather feels more Autumnal.

A shopping trip always needs a pit stop for refreshments, so we visited @langansbrasserie for a gorgeous dinner. Swipe to the end to see the bathroom which I am obsessing over. I think I might need a pink bathroom - do you think my boys would mind?

There’s no better therapy than girl time, it just has this way of filling your heart with so much joy. I highly recommend it.
