Can you believe it’s been a decade since I shared a tutorial for Caramel Apple Slices that went crazy viral and continues to be one of my most popular recipes?
A while back I wanted to make something similar for summer, using some edible gold paint and a star theme.
I love how it turned out to look like falling stars! And who doesn’t love stargazing late at night after a day of fun in the summer sun!?
While I typically cut the apple from side to side (not eating the core, just around it), this time I decided to turn it on its side when cutting and then remove the core with a star cookie cutter.
I have made these chocolate-covered apple treats countless times. I even have a blog post with over 10 tips, tricks, and hacks you need to know to help you make them.
Below are some basic tips, but I recommend checking out the full post, filled with many more helpful tips.
3 (out of 10) recommendations:
Cut thick apple slices so the stick stays secure in each slice. Approximately 1/2–3/4-inch thickness works well.
Make sure to pat each apple slice down really well with a towel to soak up any extra apple juice, so the chocolate will stick better and not slide off.
Allow some of the dark chocolate melting wafers to drip off the apple slice and onto the stick. This will act as a sort of edible glue that holds the stick and apple together.
Be sure to check out my blog post tutorial for 7 more tips.
I hope you have fun making, sharing, and eating these Star Apple Slices!
Note 1: I used edible paint and a pastry brush (not a paintbrush) only ever used with food.
Note 2: You can find a caramel version (caramel apple slices) on my blog too.

I really wanted to make a DIY Mermaid Hairbrush for Sabrina, as I’m working on creating a whole collection of mermaid accessories and crafts for her to play with and use in the future.
But then I couldn’t decide whether to make a small one for her to use now (because she loves to brush her hair with dinglehoppers) or a big one for when she is a little older.
So I decided it would be even more fun to make two, a mommy & me set of mermaid hairbrushes.
A small one for her now and a big one for her to use later (or for me to use until she is older).
I was going to completely cover them in pearls, but then I realized I didn’t have enough, so I opted for these craft crystals to fill in the space around the shells.
I wasn’t sure how it would look, but I’m in love with how it turned out.
The craft crystals kind of look like the bubbles and foam from waves crashing against the shore.
Plus, they sparkle beautifully in the sunlight!
When I handed it to her after her nap (oh yes, Rog & little Rog were up in the condo building LEGOs while Sabrina took a nap, and I decorated these hairbrushes on the beach), she immediately started brushing her hair.
And then she tried to pull the pieces off, because she is one, and that’s the stage we are in.
So I decided to tuck it away with the other shell crafts I’ve made over the last few years, so I can gift them all to her in the years to come.

This DIY Mermaid Seashell Compact is the most fun beach craft that you can enjoy using all summer long for years to come.
As I was making this seashell pocket mirror, I decided to make a whole array of beach and shell items for my baby girl to play with when she is older.
I plan to make a shell box and put all my homemade seashell treasures in it, and then gift it to her in a few years.
So far, I have this mermaid makeup mirror and some handmade seashell hairpins.
I think my next project will be a hairbrush to go with her growing collection of seashell accessories!
Will you be making a DIY Mermaid Seashell Compact this summer?
ps. This would make such a fun project for a craft night or on a rainy beach day!

This summer marks fourteen years since we said ā€œI doā€!
Long-time readers might remember that my mom and I, with incredible help from friends and family, crafted dozens of DIY projects for our backyard wedding back in 2013.
We made everything from book paper wreaths to doily cones filled with popcorn and nuts for guests to enjoy before the ceremony. Those early tutorials are still hiding somewhere in my blog archives, complete with questionable photography!
If you haven’t guessed already, it was the epitome of shabby chic, the signature style of early 2010s weddings.
My mom went all out on the decor, we spent weekends antiquing together, and my dad devoted countless hours to perfecting the yard.
Though my style has evolved far beyond shabby chic over the years (although it’s inching its way back into my heart and our home), I’ve held onto my love for glass jars. I have a sizable collection tucked away in various cabinets and containers around the house.
At our wedding reception, we filled the jars with sand and topped them with real candles. This time, I opted for battery-operated tea lights paired with fresh flowers instead.
Which do you prefer? Glass jars with candles, flowers, or both?

Something I have been doing for years is placing plants in planters without removing them from their original plastic planters, and placing marble rocks on top.
The first time I shared this, it went crazy viral, and people had a lot to say (especially those who didn’t read the caption)!
I have many reasons for doing this on my front porch, one of which is that I love shopping for plants!
It’s so much fun to pick out plants, enjoy them all season long, and then swap them out for something new!
But before you get upset, this setup is very temporary, and these plants won't be tossed once the season is over.
Oh no! We’ve already got plans for them. We have four of these on our front porch, and they will be planted around our 2-story shed (which we got last fall) once this fall rolls around.
And once we have cooler weather, I plan on replacing all these trees with mums.
So not only do I get to enjoy them on my porch, but I’ll also get to watch them grow in our yard.
And then I get to get all new plants for our front porch and enjoy something new for a time.
But why not just fill it with dirt? Mainly because dirt is messy. But also, have you seen the cost of good dirt these days? I’d rather save it for when we plant them in the ground and give them a good fertilizing then.
And for those who are worried this is bad for the plant, a nursery left a comment on my previous video years ago and said, ā€œFor those worried the tree won’t survive. They sit for years in these pots where they are produced, & again for months & years at Garden Centers. The caption makes clear that this is for a temporary display & will be planted out properly when the season changes. We think it’s a great idea.ā€
And I have to agree, as this is the front porch trick that I go back to year after year!
Ps. I repurposed a pool noodle (this is the second time I’ve done this) around the edges so I wouldn’t have to fill it with rocks, and they could just sit on top of the noodles.

For years, I’ve been gifting store-bought flowers wrapped in tissue paper.
They look so much prettier than the standard plastic sleeves from the grocery store and feel a little more special.
The only downside is that tissue paper can be fragile, so I’d often wrap the flowers in the car just before gifting, worried the paper might rip in transit.
Then I saw @andeelightful’s version wrapped in paper, and it looked gorgeous!
Inspired, I decided to combine the two wrapping styles into one.
While I still had plenty of tissue paper, I was running low on craft paper.
Unfortunately, the dollar store where I usually bought it was completely out of stock.
I scoured the internet and read countless reviews searching for the perfect brown paper.
So many of the options online were thick and heavy-duty.
While those qualities are great for other projects, I needed something thin and easy to work with for these bouquets.
After lots of searching, I finally found the right one!
Now I have everything I need to make bouquets for Easter, Mother’s Day, birthdays, parties, hostess gifts, or just for fun!
What’s your favorite grocery store to get flowers from?

This viral Watermelon Cake is one of my favorite summer fruit DIYs.
With over 120 million views and 2.6 million likes, I’m guessing it’s one of your favorites too!
It’s made entirely of fruit and finished with extra fruit and fresh mint leaves.
I secured the watermelon layers with long wooden skewers and attached the hanging fruit using wooden toothpicks.
We took it to a large family gathering that night with Roger’s family, for 30+ people to enjoy.
And serving was as easy as slicing and enjoying.
Don’t worry! We weren’t responsible for dessert!
This was just a fun alternative to a fruit platter (and I brought a traditional dessert, too).
Here are some answers to a few recurring questions I’ve received:
Serving:
Cutting and serving is simple, just like with a regular cake.
When it was time to eat, I immediately cut into the watermelon cake so no one hesitated to be the first.
You can remove the toothpicks from the fruit before serving or leave them in for easy finger food.
Cleanliness:
For anyone concerned about hygiene, I’m diligent about washing my hands. I don’t sell my creations; I share them only with family and close friends.
When to Make:
I made this Watermelon Cake in the late morning/early afternoon and served it in the evening. More details about refrigeration and transportation are on my blog.
Are you planning to make a Watermelon Cake this summer?
P.S. My (then) 2-year-old son and 92-year-old grandmother both loved snacking on the extra watermelon while I made this summer cake.
