Making over my walk in closet as part of the One Room Challenge. Here’s everything I used to make it

A peek inside one of my husband’s Ikea pax wardrobe for his work clothes. This is the shorter, deep version of the 29” wardrobe. He has two 29” wardrobes that are side by side & we split the doors so there's two 19” mirrors in the center & the 9” flat doors that got painted blue on the outsides. This side features a hanging section on top, a shelf, more hanging for pants, and then two slide out trays with some dividers for extra hangers & belts & another shelf below for additional shoes. A little look at my DIY walk in closet makeover using the Ikea pax system & adding wood face frame, light blue paint, striped wallpaper lining for the backs & polished nickel hardware. The shoe tower is the 29” and holds 3-4 pairs of size 8.5 shoes on each shelf. The other wardrobe is also 29” but in the deeper size & has a spot for long hanging clothes, as well as large drawers, an area for sweaters & a shelf above for additional storage. I also swapped the hanging rods to metal ones & it feels so luxe.

The valet hook that retracts into the wall to fit perfectly behind a door & makes for the ultimate spot to pull clothes & steam them next to my ikea pax shoe shelves / wardrobe which I wallpapered, trimmed out with 1x2s, and primed then painted the prettiest shade of French blue as part of my diy walk in closet makeover 🤍

The prettiest traditional polished nickel valet rod that retracts into the wall for extra space! Such a luxe closet upgrade that you’ll end up using & loving.

Why does no one talk about how ugly the ikea closet rods are?

I knew I wanted to swap to metal rods, but the real surprise was that “upgrading” actually cost less than the IKEA version! ✨

I swapped out the standard komplement closet rods for a more elevated, oval metal option that fit perfectly into the adjustable holes for a much more high end look 🙌

I purchased in 24”, 36” & 48” sizes to be cut down for all three pax sizes (19 5/8”, 29 1/2” & 39 3/8” widths) and all of the tools to do this easy upgrade 🛒

It was the easiest DIY - just measure, mark, wrap the rod with painters tape, saw through it with a small jack saw, sand down the edges, and then install the bracket & insert the rod 🪚

When we planned out our walk in closet with the Ikea pax system this slide out tray was originally intended to hold belts & sunglasses but it ended up being so much more useful as a drop zone. Our closet is all wardrobes & doesn't have any table top or work surfaces so this slide out tray in the middle of the room ended up being the perfect space saving solution for placing clean laundry and using it as a work surface to fold and sort things & get them on the wooden hangers before sorting them into their perspective wardrobes.

The Ikea pax hack that actually saves you money! I upgraded the basic white Ikea closet rods in my pax system closet to these gorgeous chrome rods with coordinating brackets. All I had to do was trim them to size, with a little hack saw, and install normally. The craziest part about this upgrade is that these high end looking rods cost less than the cheap plastic looking ones that you get from Ikea. The walk in closet renovation is coming along! We reframed the wall so took that opportunity to add in some frameless jib doors that will look as if they’ve almost completely disappeared once we add trim. I also added this gorgeous class light for a traditional & elegant touch

The knobs for my closet drawers just arrived 📦

Now that they’re here, I can finally install the drawer fronts which is the very last step in completing the wood trim in my walk in closet - which was my goal for week 4 of the @oneroomchallenge ✨

What started as basic IKEA Pax wardrobes has completely transformed into something that looks beautiful & built in. I can't wait to show you the difference extending the cabinets to the ceiling, and adding baseboards & trim to make the doors & drawers appear inset makes 🔨

Next week I’ll be painting the cabinets to match this striped wallpaper & I’m still deciding between these dreamy shades of blue. Which one would you pick? 💙
