Food scale + tracking app = body goals

Yes, it’s that easy to get started on a better path.

Ok, so maybe summer was a little too fun. It didn’t do my body any favors. Time to get back on track.

Weighing and measuring my food to get portions back in check + tracking what I eat with an app or journal is a great way to kick start weight loss.

I love this little scale and keep it easily accessible on my counter while I’m recalibrating my portion sizes. I’ve had mine for 12 years so I don’t even know if they make it anymore, but here are a few highly rated ones under $20.

I’ve tried a ton of different tracking apps and journaling methods, but the one I consistently use the most is myFitnessPal. Their features make it the most seamless and easy to track.

Ways I try to minimize single-use plastic:

- Glass or metal water bottles
- Glass Tupperware (with plastic locking lids)
- Baggu bags for groceries
- Silicone stretchy lids instead of plastic wrap for covering bowls
- Metal straws (silicone straws for kids)
- Stasher silicone bags instead of ziplock bags
- Blueland for soap and detergent
- Bentgo lunch box and Stashers for school lunches
- W&P tumbler for to-go drinks
- W&P wine glasses for to-go wine
- Aluminum solo cups for parties (and putting them in the dishwasher to reuse)
- Paper or banana leaf disposable plates instead of plastic for parties
- Real silverware or bamboo silverware at parties
- Skipping the thin plastic produce bags at the grocery store and putting produce directly in my cart and then using a reusable bin to store them
- Avoiding produce wrapped in plastic or Styrofoam
- Minimizing food wrapping by choosing unprocessed food as much as possible
- Generally avoiding disposable items in favor of high-quality reusable ones

We’re loving the look of our new fire pit and Adirondack chairs! I love the more modern spin that still feels familiar and inviting. I knew I wanted chairs that would be comfortable without cushions. Having to store and drag out cushions every time you want to sit outside sounds like my own personal nightmare.

The fire pit is perfect all around. It looks chic, is a great height, and the wide rim is perfect for kicking your feet up or resting your glass. The fire output has a good range. The lower settings don’t put out a ton of heat making it perfect for warmer summer nights. It came with a matching box to cover the propane tank that can double as a side table. It includes a cover for the fire pit as well.

The chairs look great, but they are already showing wear after 2 weeks. I suspected this would be the case. We live in Florida where harsh sun and tons of rain are extremely hard on outdoor furniture. Unless you are buying teak wood (which typically 3-8x’s the price), it’s just not going to hold up as well over time. I’m going to get some sort of protective spray and try to seal them to see if that will extend longevity.

Ultimately, if you can swing the budget, I’d opt for real teak chairs. But if you want something that’s cheaper but still looks good, and are ok knowing you’ll have to replace them sooner, then I’d definitely suggest these. I’ll keep you posted on how the protective spray goes.

GRWM: skin care edition!

As I’m entering my 40s, retaining youthfulness is my biggest priority. One of the best ways to do that is by maximizing hydration daily. Here’s the skin care routine I’ve found that works best for lasting hydration:

1. Vitamin C serum - I swear by SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, and every dermatology professional I speak with swears by it as well.
2. Spritz with a hydration mist (I only do this if my skin isn’t still damp from washing my face and applying C serum.) This one I got from a spa in Scottsdale.
3. Hyaluronic acid - I’m currently using Kiehl’s Ultra Pure Hyaluronic Acid 1.5% serum. At $35, it’s a great budget pick! I’ve heard the Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier is really amazing but I haven’t tried it yet.
4. Eye cream - Right now, I’m using Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus+ eye cream, but my favorite is SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Advanced Eye.
5. Moisture barrier - I’m loving Dr. Jart+ Ceramididin Skin Barrier Moisturizing Cream. It really locks in moisture all day. If you’re looking for a more luxury option, I also love SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore. If you want something that feels a little lighter, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial cream is great too.
6. Deodorant - I usually let my face absorb all the goodness above for a few minutes before applying sunscreen. So I typically use this time to apply deodorant, haha.
7. Mineral sunscreen - I’m a huge believer in using a mineral sunscreen for daily use. This is mostly because a mineral block is going to keep protecting you all day while the chemical blocks wear off after a couple hours. Plus, who wants more chemicals if you don’t need them? I’m a die-hard Elta MD fan. UV Physical, UV Elements, and UV AOX are my favorites because they’re chemical free and tinted.

This setup keeps my skin looking dewy ALL DAY LONG. Which makes me look younger and keeps my concealer from looking cakey or settling into my fine lines.

Last tip: if you have bangs, you may want to gently blot your forehead to absorb some of the oil to keep your bangs from looking greasy.

I recently ran out and was going on a trip, so I ran to CVS to try to find a replacement. Y’all! I was appalled at the daily sunscreen options there! There was only 1 mineral sunscreen in the whole store that was tinted (a must in my opinion.) I bought it and it was meh. And I’m pretty sure it’s giving me little breakouts. No wonder people don’t like wearing face sunscreen every day! If those were my options, I wouldn’t either.

Metal skewers are soooooo much better than wood ones. They’re cheap and reusable and you don’t end up with wood splinters in your food. I’ve included 2 options: the cheaper ones that are pictured here… I like them but they are CRAZY sharp and slightly more flimsy than I want them to be. But the length is great. The other set are probably what I’d get next time. The reviews show that they’re sturdier and not quite as sharp. But they’re also 2” shorter which I don’t love. You choose!

I’ve had this cookbook for a long time and still reference it a lot. It has the best roasted chicken recipe that I have found to date. Of all Thomas Keller’s cookbooks, this one is actually approachable and doable on a week night. I also love his “lifesavers” chapter, that focuses on pickles, jams, and other sauces that can be made and stored for awhile. These can help elevate a simple salad or grilled chicken when you want something quick.
