As mentioned in stories, I haven't felt well for a few days now. This meant I was in bed a lot, and fell completely out of my routine. Today was my first day feeling like myself, and all I wanted to do was get back into that routine. Tonight's Princess Diaries Gift Guide is fitting, as it includes my AM/PM skincare routine, as well as hair and makeup for the days I need a little "Mia" transformation. I know the boards have a lot more verbiage than usual, but I'm writing up a complete page with this information for anyone needing help at the beauty counter. I'll share the page in stories when it is complete! Everything in my routine may not work for you, but these are honest reviews and recommendations of things that have worked well for me. On my last solo night in Paris I wanted to do something I’d never forget. So I booked a ticket for a small concert held at Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It’s considered the oldest church in Paris and just one street over from the famed Cafe de Flore. Now Vivaldi and Schubert meet to bring you a night of magic under the cobalt vaulted ceilings.

I chose to walk back to my hotel that night and enjoyed every minute of it. This is the thing about Paris. Magic is around every corner and it’s one of the best cities to explore. The city is beautiful by day and at night it twinkles all around.

One of the best tips I can give for any traveler is to book one thing special like this. I love finding a ballet, opera or concert but also venture to the skies and take helicopter rides. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but these little planned outings become core memories that are unforgettable. Do you have anything special you like to plan on trips? I’d love to hear about it!

You might find this hard to believe, but I was extremely shy when I was younger. So the first time I ate at a communal table in a restaurant I was thrown off. Honestly, it took me a while to get used to this concept. I couldn’t tell you exactly when this feeling changed, but it was around the time I saw the movie “About A Boy”.

It begins with the quote “No man is an island” and the rest of the movie is spent showing just how lonely life would be as an island. We are meant to be social and I’ve come to love and appreciate the communal aspects of life.

Last night I asked for your help in deciding on a dress to wear as a wedding guest. I’m still wading through a sea of messages, and the most beautiful part of it all has been the conversations that sparked from this. One particular message came from Sweden and the ensuing conversation really was so lovely and made my day.

It’s been on my mind since that we have an opportunity and luxury to talk to people all around the world. I wonder how much of this novelty will be lost on future generations and what pieces of convenience I take for granted daily. Pop quiz: but what convenience are you most thankful for today? Hint: there are no wrong answers.

What do you actually want for Mother’s Day? It was the question we’d ask my mom after her reply to our first inquiry was “obedient children”. Her request might have made it easier on my wallet, but it meant that for at least a day I had to mind my p’s and q’s.

Fast forward thirty years and she still uses this same reply, though we’ve been able to wheedle out a few things actually does want. Or perhaps we’ve gotten to know her better as adults. Either way, one thing I know she will love this year is a gift from @HeidiCareyDesign. Rain or shine, most mornings I make my way to the dog park. One day I noticed an elderly man leaving his giant chocolate lab behind and driving off. My heart instantly sunk. What I first thought was him abandoning the dog turned out to be one of the sweetest daily routines I’ve come to love.

The man, Sam, can’t walk Louie anymore so he drops him off at the park and drives the fenced perimeter of the area. Honking the whole way so Louie can “chase” him. I’ve started cheering Louie on each morning as he wildly runs after the car and know now that Sam comes back to throw a ball after a few minutes of car chasing.

Sam wears the same outfit daily and loves to tell the silliest Grandpa jokes. He has a new one everyday and I can always tell he’s excited to share it. I’ve learned that his wife is in a care facility and he takes the same jokes there to “make the old people laugh”.

If you are wanting to go on vacation but can’t at the moment I hope this little story reminds you that people, and places, are not always as they first appear. Go out and explore your town and learn to appreciate the details you’ve missed on the first go around. There is a term in photography coined by Henri Cartier-Bresson called the decisive moment. It’s the point at which the viewer recognizes significance and tension within a moment to capture. It’s the precise second before the splash as a runner encounters a puddle. Or the joy that is seen before it’s felt in an embrace between old friends.

He used this moment to create a unique form of narrative through pictures and it’s remained one of the most valuable lessons I learned in college. A lesson that came back to mind in my early thirties. I was living about a block away from the Gulf in Destin and most everyday I’d get up to watch the sunrise. It dawned on me that behind the decisive moment, just before the wave crashed, there was a whole process that brought the wave there. This wasn’t a new thought unique to me, but this was the moment I understood its importance and changed my perspective.

It’s easy to miss the journey the water takes to become a wave. Or to forget that there is a whole world living below the crash. If you’re looking at someone else’s decisive moment, whether it’s good or bad, I hope we can think about this unknown and unseen factor to provide grace or remove envy.
