Thanksgiving countdown is ON ⤵️ . 🦃 This is one of my favorite Thanksgiving tablescape ideas. . 🍂 Here is how you create this tablescape: . 1️⃣ Table cloth: . 💫 For this tablescape I used an ivory table cloth for a more muted look. . 2️⃣ Centerpiece: . 💫 I filled my dough bowl with lots of squash, pumpkins and gourds. . 💫 Then added one of my favorite candles to the top, along with my favorite twinkle lights. . 3️⃣ Place settings: . 💫 First, I placed a gorgeous leaf placemat at each place setting. . 💫 Then, topped that with silver chargers. . 💫 Next, I placed china from Andy’s parents on top of the chargers. . 💫 Finally, I added festive Thanksgiving paper napkins. . 4️⃣ Salt and Pepper shakers: . 💫 I love my turkey salt and pepper shakers for Thanksgiving! . 5️⃣ Candles: . 💫 I added a few more of my favorite candles to the Thanksgiving table for a festive glow. . 💫 Along with some fun turkey candles that I used as decoration. 🌿 This tropical beauty is going in the middle of the window box. Easy to care for. Thrives in low light conditions. Annual except gardening zones zones: 9-11.

2️⃣ Sword Fern - Kimberly Queen:
.
🌿 Planting 2 of these ferns on each side of Janet Craig Dragon Tree Dracaena.
.
🌿 Annual except gardening zones zones: 9-11. Full to partial shade. 36” tall.
.
3️⃣ Dracaena Marginata Kiwi:
.
🌿 Planting two of these on each side of Kimberly Queens. Tropical, hardy gardening zones 9-11.
.
4️⃣ Bird’s Nest Victoria Fern:
.
🌿 Planting 2 of these on the end of each window box. Hardy in zones: 10-11.
.
5️⃣ Fern - Asparagus:
.
🌿 Planting 2 of these in the front of the window boxes. They will cascade down the front.
.
🌿 Annual except in gardening zones: 10-11.
.
🪴 All of these beautiful tropical plants can be brought indoors after the season ends to use as house plants.

🪴They do not like temperatures below 50 degrees. So keep an eye on temps in the fall to move them indoors!

Outdoor entryway transformation👇🏻

🌊 What a year it’s been at Empire Beach House!
.
🌊 The beginning of the video shows the outside of the beach house last September.
.
🙌🏻 Then the transformation update last weekend!
.
🌊 I wanted guests to feel a peaceful coastal vibe when they came up to the front door.
.
🌊 The biggest issue we had in this area was the front door.
.
🥶 It had a huge gap in the bottom that was actually letting snow in durning the winter

🥲 Sadly, it was in such bad shape - it had to go.
.
🌊 When designing this space, inside light was my main concern. The entryway prior to the renovation was dark, sad and dingy… it needed light desperately.
.
🌊 So we decided to add a door with lots of glass.
.
🌊 The problem with that is - privacy, not letting passersby see inside.
.
🌊 Picking a glass that worked in the door was a challenge.
.
💦 We ended up choosing - Rainglass. We loved it because it gave privacy - yet still let in a ton of light.
.

What a journey it’s been👇🏻

🏖 A year ago we purchased this rental cottage in Empire Beach, Michigan.
.
🏖 Last October we started a renovation journey of a lifetime. It’s been one of the hardest things we have ever done. I honestly wasn’t sure if we would finish.
.
🏖 It was severely neglected both inside and out. The gardens where so overgrown you couldn't see the house!
.
🏖 Andy and I did majority of the work ourselves. I did all the design work without ever going into a store!
.
🏖 Seeing it all done has been so overwhelming. God has been so loving. He has given us knowledge, wisdom, strength and courage - beyond what we could ever have mustered on our own. He filled our days with peace that where plagued with worry and stress.
.
🏖 I will share the before cottage tour in my stories today. It’s so unbelievable for me to look pack at the old videos.
.

🕊 The number one way to attract birds to your garden is… WATER!!
.
🕊 If you LOVE watching backyard birds while you are gardening you want to do this:
.
*️⃣ Steps to creating a backyard bird bird bath with smart camera
.
1️⃣ Location.
.
🕊A spot in your garden with good cover from predators and a good lookout spot for the birds to evaluate the bird bath. It also has to be close to an outdoor outlet.
.
2️⃣ A large tray.
.
🕊 Large enough and deep enough for the pump and slate/rocks.
.
3️⃣ Pieces of slate & rocks.
.
🕊You need 2 large pieces of slate, each resembling a semicircle. Both need to be different thicknesses to offer a deep and shallow end for your birds.
.
🕊 The deeper end is for larger birds like robin and cardinals. The shallow end is chickadees and titmice. A smaller piece of slate is perfect for covering up the back of the pump to secure it. Varying size rocks are great for filling in any deep pockets.
.
4️⃣ A pump that is equipped with a shut off sensor:
.
🕊 This is essential. Just in case your fountain drains out of water. That way you don’t burn up your motor.
.
5️⃣ A good camera:
.
🕊 If you want to capture all your backyard bird action in your garden you need a good camera.
.
🕊 The camera I use is from Birdsy. It records all your birds and wildlife visitors.
.
*️⃣ BONUS TIP - Cleaning:
.
🕊 Fresh water is essential for birds. Your fountain should be dumped 7 scrubbed every other day. The lens of the camera can be cleaned with a rag and a little vinegar.

How to add a bit of your spring garden to your porch 👇🏻

🌷 This week I have been sharing ideas how to create a beautiful front porch for spring

🌷THREE easy steps for planting tulips in spring container gardens:

1️⃣ Prepare your planter:
.
🌿 Leave last seasons potting soil in your container.
.
🌷 No need for fresh potting soil since these will be staying in the plastic tulip bowls.
.
🌿 Make a well in the center of container with potting soil.
.
2️⃣ Sink Your Plastic Containers:
.
🌷 Sink your you plastic container filled with tulips in your well in the center of planter.
.
🌿 Make sure it’s level and snug.
.
3️⃣ Backfill
.
🌷 Fill around your container with potting soil to hide plastic container.
.
*️⃣ Repeat:
.
🌿 Repeat this process with your other containers
.

🌷 This is a tulip blend from Colorblends called ‘See View Plait’.
.
🌿 It has staggered bloom times so I will be enjoying all spring long.
.
🌷 When you are ready to plant your annuals in your pots, you can pull the tulip bowls. Place the tulips in sun and let them turn brown. This will help them make energy for next season. Tulips will bloom again next season, but not as strong as the first bloom.
.
🌿 In the fall you can transfer bulbs from your bowl into the garden and replant bowl with new tulip bulbs.
.

Simple garden HACK you didn’t know!! ⤵️
.
🌷I have done this hack for years. If you do this in the fall, it will save you money in the spring.
.
➡️ How to plant spring bulbs for your containers gardens.
.
1️⃣ Find plastic containers that you can fit within your planter
.
2️⃣ Fill the bottom of each of the plastic containers with about 2” of dirt.
.
3️⃣ Place the tulips on top of the dirt. Packing them in snugly. I have about 20 tulip bulbs in the bottom of each of my containers.
.
4️⃣ After placing tulips bulbs inside the containers, fill with dirt to the top of the container.
.
5️⃣ Dig out an area to bury your containers.
.
🌷 This can be within a raised bed like mine or in your garden itself.
.
7️⃣ Cover with dirt & mark area with plant tags so you remember where they are next spring!
.
8️⃣ Sprinkle ground Cayenne Pepper evenly on top of flower bed to keep squirrels from digging up (they love to eat them).
.
🌷Doing this hack in the fall months will ensure that you will have beautiful containers for your front porch in the spring. This hack can be done with any spring flowering bulb.
.
🌷 Spring flowering bulbs must be planted in the fall. They need cool soil to help them take root before the onset of winter.
.
🤔 You maybe asking why I don’t plant them directly within my front porch containers? Here in Michigan, the temperatures get too cold. My front porch pots don’t provide enough insulation to keep the bulbs from freezing, killing the bulbs. I have tried and it’s failed for me.
.
😰 I have also tried putting the planted containers in the garage and that failed as well. Being buried with enough soil around them to keep them insulated with sun and rain, seems to be the perfect combination for successful spring bulb growth.

🪴 This may seem like a no brainer, but I have seen many not check for drainage holes only to witness their plants die FAST! Water has to drain out the bottom of your pot or you will have root rot quickly!

2️⃣ Coffee Filters:
.
🪴 I normally add a coffee filter over the drainage holes to keep the soil from flushing out the bottom.
.
3️⃣ Good Potting Soil:
.
🌿 Fill your container with FRESH potting soil. I love Miracle Gro!!
.
4️⃣ Osmocote:
.
🌸 Osmocote is a slow release fertilizer. It will feed your annuals all summer long. This will eliminate the need for liquid fertilizer - time saver! The recommendations for how much to add is on the package. I always add MORE than recommended.
.
5️⃣ Moisten Soil:
.
🚿 I always moisten my soil before adding annuals. The soil will condense upon getting wet, so you will have to add additional potting soil to fill the pot back up. Moisten the soil to a cake batter consistency.

Sharing my FIVE steps for successful window boxes.

1️⃣ Fresh Potting Soil:

Fill your window boxes with FRESH potting soil. I love Miracle Gro!! I always moisten my soil before adding annuals. The soil will condense upon getting wet, so you will have to add additional potting soil to fill the window box back up. Moisten the soil to a cake batter consistency.
.
2️⃣ Osmocote:
.
🌸 Osmocote is a slow release fertilizer. It will feed your annuals all summer long. This will eliminate the need for liquid fertilizer - time saver! The recommendations for how much to add is on the package. I always add MORE than recommended.

3️⃣ Fantastic Preforming Annuals:
.
🪴 Petunia - Supertunia Vista Silverberrry (2 total): Supertunias are self cleaning so no dead heading!! Height: 1- 2’. Spread: 1 -2’

🌿 One of my ABSOLUTE favorite varieties of sweet potato vine. I adore it’s fern like texture in a container. The color is stunning as well. Height 6 -12”. Trailing/spreading: 18 - 30. Plant 1 in the middle of window box.

4️⃣ Full Sun:
.
☀️ To achieve this look the window box must be in full sun. Meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight a day.
.
5️⃣ Water Daily:
.
The importance of this cannot be overlooked. For your plants to thrive they need daily watering. This window box has a water reservoir, but I still water daily because it dries out quickly.

2️⃣ Verbena - Superbena Raspberry:
.
🌿 Plant this beauty on the side of your basket. It will tail out the side. Does not require deadheading, it’s self cleaning! Height: 6-12”, spread: 18-30”. Full to part sun.

3️⃣ Petunia - Supertunia Mini Vista Violet Star:
.
🌿 Plant this mini petunia on the side of your basket. It will form a beautiful mound over the side of your basket. Height: 8-12”, spread: 24-36”. Full to part sun.

1️⃣ Add a coco fiber liner to your basket. Available at most nurseries.
.
2️⃣ Fill with Miracle Gro Potting soil.

🚿 These will dry out a bit faster. I normally water mine daily.

🦌 My gardening advice to make YOUR gardens deer & rabbit resistant:
.
🌿 Behind me in this video are 10 bird feeders. I have 14 deer that come daily to munch.
.
🦌 Out of my love for flowers and gardening, I had to figure out a way to keep the deer & rabbits away.
.
🌿 I am sharing my secrets with you to keep your garden safe from critters. With diligence and a little hard work, I know you can too!

👩🏼‍🌾 My formula for keeping deer & rabbits from eating my perennials and annuals:

🌿 For success you need to use both steps!
.
1️⃣ Spray Liquid Fence:
.
🦌 Spray TWO times a week on all garden beds and container gardens. If you have heavy rain storms, apply again! I have found that spraying MORE than recommended is needed to keep deer away.
.
🐇 Rabbits seem NOT to be not bothered by Liquid Fence. For rabbit issues, go to step 2…
.
2️⃣ Spread Milorganite:
.
🌿 Using a hand spreader, spread Milorganite TWO times a month on all garden beds.
.
🦌 It is a FANTASTIC fertilizer!! YOUR hostas will grow like the wind and the deer will walk away!!! A win! Win!
.
🤔 What is Milorganite?
.
🌿 Milorganite is a non burning, slow release, organically derived nitrogen fertilizer. It is heat dried microbes that have digested organic material in wastewater from Milwaukee. One of the nations oldest recycling programs (starting in 1926).

Part 3 - Decorating my living room mantle and garland for Christmas. ⤵️

🎄 How to make your Christmas mantel look EXTRAORDINARY!
.
1️⃣ Nativity Set:
.
💫 I love to have a small representation of the Christmas story on my mantel.
.
🎄 They represent the true meaning of the season

🎄 I have been collecting nativity sets and scenes for a while.
.
💫 I think they look perfect with my Silent Night scroll!
.
2️⃣ Beaded garland:
.
🎄I hang this garland towards the bottom.
.
💫 I love that it provides a bit of sparkle to my mantel
.
3️⃣ Accessories:
.
🎄 I added in some silver and gold glass balls to the garland. I simply hung them with tree ornaments hangers in the garland
.
💫 Many of you know my dear mom had been giving me angels since I was a little girl.
.
🎄 I have both angel ornaments and stationary angels. I place some of my favorite stationery angels on the flat surface of the mantel. Some of my favorite angel ornaments in the garland itself.
.

The number one question I get asked ALL the time… ⤵️

🕊From all of you bird watchers how do you make your bird bath?
.
1️⃣ Location.
.
🕊A spot with good cover from predators and a good lookout spot for the birds to evaluate the bird bath. It also has to be close to an outdoor outlet.
.
2️⃣ A large tray.
.
🕊 Large enough and deep enough for the pump and slate/rocks.
.
3️⃣ Pieces of slate & rocks.
.
🕊You need 2 large pieces of slate, each resembling a semicircle. Both need to be different thicknesses to offer a deep and shallow end for your birds.
.
🕊 The deeper end is for larger birds like robin and cardinals. The shallow end is chickadees and titmice.
.
🕊 A smaller piece of slate is perfect for covering up the back of the pump to secure it. Varying size rocks are great for filling in any deep pockets.
.
4️⃣ A pump that is equipped with a shut off sensor
.
🕊 This is essential. Just in case your fountain drains out of water. That way you don’t burn up your motor.
.
5️⃣ A good camera:
.
🕊 If you want to capture all your backyard bird action you need a good camera.
.
🕊 The camera I use is from @Birdsy_tv. It records all your birds and wildlife visitors. You can watch live or browse your videos by date or month. You can also save your favorites. The videos can then be downloaded and shared!
.
6️⃣ A heater:
.
🕊 Adding a heater is a must this time of year. I found a fantastic heater that I have used the past couple of years. It does a wonderful job keeping the water from freezing.
.
7️⃣ Cleaning:
.
🕊 In Michigan right now, our outside hoses are shut off to keep our pipes from freezing. So unfortunately, you have to haul out buckets of water to clean and fill your fountain.
.
🕊 Your fountain should be dumped and cleaned every other day. Fresh water is essential for birds.
.

Part 2 - Decorating my living room mantle for Christmas. ⤵️

🎄 How to make your Christmas garland look EXTRAORDINARY!
.
1️⃣ Hang an inexpensive garland first:
.
💫 Find the cheapest garland, and hang that first as a base making sure that it fits the entire length of your mantel.
.
🎄 When hanging, I fold the garland in half to find the middle. Wrap a stem of the garland around a nail placed in the center my mantel.
.
💫 On my mantel I have small nails in the middle, on each end and half way between each end. Wrap a stem of the garland on each nail securely.
.
🎄 I like using nails because I KNOW they will hold the weight of the garland and decorations.
.
💫 I like to hang the garland below the flat mantel surface so I can add decorative elements on the mantel itself.
.
2️⃣ Hang a filler garland:
.
🎄 This garland is going to be a bit more expensive.
.
💫 But, you only have to purchase one.
.
🎄 It doesn’t have to go the entire length of your mantel, just the center.
.
💫 It’s a decorating investment that you be will be able to use for years
.
🎄 For this garland I like to find something with mixed greens, pieces cones and twigs mixed in.
.
4️⃣ Add your lights:
.
💫 I like to add my lights at this stage, before I add my thriller garland.
.
🎄 Make sure to go around the garland at the top and then at the bottom to really light it beautifully.
.
5️⃣ Add a thriller garland:
.
💫 This is your crazy beautiful garland.
.
🎄 It can be frosted or glittery ~ filled with everything you love!
.
💫 This garland generally is less full, but you don't need a lot to make a statement.
.
🎄 Make sure to purchase one that complements the color scheme in the room your decorating.
.
🏆 That’s it! You have a showstopper garland!!
