Linked my kids’ current favorite books! I’m not anti-technology. And I’m certainly not here to tell another parent how to raise their kids. But I do know mine… And if they had a screen in their hands every time we got in the car, I’m pretty confident those books wouldn’t be getting nearly as much attention. Not every car ride looks like this. Sometimes it’s chaos, arguing, or asking how much longer until we get there. But I love seeing what they choose when there’s room for something else. Sometimes it’s a book. Sometimes it’s a conversation. Sometimes it’s just being bored. And I think there’s something really good about that. Here’s the thing, though. Not all of my kids are naturally readers. That 13-year-old? She’s fought reading practically her entire life. But she FINALLY found a series that sucked her in, and now I can’t get her to put it down. And I think that’s what I’m getting at. Sometimes we have to give our kids enough space to discover the things they don’t even know they’ll love yet. And sometimes that means letting them be bored. Letting the car ride be quiet. Letting them figure out how to entertain themselves. We talk a lot in our house about how choosing one thing often means missing out on something else. Screens aren’t inherently bad, but they can certainly crowd out other things. So no, this isn’t a post about why kids shouldn’t have phones. It’s just a little reminder that sometimes what our kids need isn’t more entertainment.
