“The Art Of…” Episode 1: Manicures “First, my hand was dipped in perfumed water,” stated British writer Veva Karsland as she described a visit to Mary E. Cobb’s Manhattan salon. “Then the nails were skillfully shaped by Miss Cobb’s experienced fingers, [using] a small file made expressly for the purpose, the sides rounded with a sharp pair of scissors.” Karsland made sure to highlight Cobb’s newest innovation: the emery board. “Next, they were rubbed with the little emery boards and polished with Cherri‑lip paste,” she noted in "The Nursing Record" in 1889. (Karsland, Veva. “The Manicure.” Women and Their Work. The Nursing Record, 24 Oct. 1889, p. 241.) Before Cobb co‑founded the emery board with her ex-husband, manicures were performed with dentistry tools and products. Her invention became a global staple. This is evidence that some of beauty’s biggest innovations started in the hands of women. foryou beauty manicures nailcare explore (women's history month, international women’s day, women entrepreneur, women-led business, woman-owned, beauty industry, nail care, hair care, makeup industry, beauty salon, nail salon, boss woman, career woman, manicure and pedicure, asian immigrants, French manicure, French tips, self care, beauty maintenance, mani pedi, hand modeling, nail designs, nail shape, acrylic nails, natural nails, Russian manicure, gel manicure, gel polish, womanhood, girlhood, divine feminine, minimalistic nails, chic nails, modest, nude nails, neutral nails, kbeauty, 3d nail art, henna nails, 90s nails, self expression, hip hop culture, Black American culture, beauty content, lifestyle content, writer life, cinematic, journalistic, reporter, journalist, lifestyle journalist, documentarian, creative producer) LTKselfcare LTKBeauty LTKdayinmylife
