“First, my hand was dipped in perfumed water,” stated British writer Veva Karsland as she described a visit to Mary E. Cobb’s Manhattan salon.

“Then the nails were skillfully shaped by Miss Cobb’s experienced fingers, [using] a small file made expressly for the purpose, the sides rounded with a sharp pair of scissors.”

Karsland made sure to highlight Cobb’s newest innovation: the emery board.

“Next, they were rubbed with the little emery boards and polished with Cherri‑lip paste,” she noted in "The Nursing Record" in 1889.

Before Cobb co‑founded the emery board with her ex-husband, manicures were performed with dentistry tools and products. Her invention became a global staple. This is evidence that some of beauty’s biggest innovations started in the hands of women.

Even now, as pain settles into her joints, there’s a tenderness in her hands that time can’t erase.

Surprise surpriiiise! Of course, some things didn’t fit or flatter my body the way I had pictured, but this feels like a great start.

I donated most of my clothes 2-3 years ago, and am now building my “adult” wardrobe from the socks up 🤭. My goal is more pieces of quality like the @cottonon cropped quarter-zip, more modest pieces like the midi dresses, and comfortable, tall-girl-friendly pants like these pairs from @asos and @tommyjeans. Am I headed in a good direction?
