My Favorite Supplements to support menopause and midlife to look and feel your best!

These four supplements are science backed to help with anxiety, as a pharmacist, always surprised more women don’t know about them!

Here’s what the research actually says about anxiety in midlife… (and what helps).

Feeling overwhelmed, wired, or just not like yourself lately?

It’s not “just stress.” Hormonal shifts in midlife can directly impact mood, sleep, and anxiety levels.

As a pharmacist of 37 years—and a woman in midlife myself—these are the supplements backed by studies I pay attention to:

✨ Magnesium

Shown to improve anxiety and depression scores on validated scales—especially in women under stress.

✨ Vitamin D

Low levels are strongly linked to mood disorders. Supplementation has been shown to improve symptoms of generalized anxiety.

✨ Ashwagandha

An adaptogen clinically studied to lower cortisol and significantly improve scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale.

✨ Probiotics

Your gut and brain are deeply connected and specific strains have been shown to reduce anxiety and support mood ( look for lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) .

🕒 Most studies show benefits in as little as 4–12 weeks and quality, dosing, and consistency matter.

And always check with your healthcare provider before starting anything new, especially if you’re already dealing with anxiety.

When you’re 60 but still feel you’re 30…here are 3 multitasking supplements that can help you keep up!

⭐️ Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s support brain health and cardiovascular health—especially important as estrogen declines in midlife. They can also help reduce inflammation, support mood, and may even contribute to that healthy skin glow.

⭐️ A Probiotic

A quality probiotic can support gut health, immunity, and mood (hello ageless attitude). Better gut health may also help with regularity and reduce bloating so you can feel your confident best.

⭐️ Collagen Support

Women can lose up to 30% of collagen in the first five years of menopause, and levels continue to decline each year. Supporting collagen can help with bone health, joints, hair, and skin.

As a pharmacist, I would never not consider these questions before adding in a supplement.

✨Does this interact with any medication I’m taking? For example, many supplements including my favorite Omega 3’s can have a blood thinning effect and interact with blood thinners. I check this all of the time for family members.

✨Can I take this with certain disease states? For example Vitamin C can affect women who have a painful bladder 🙋‍♀️( I wound up in a severe two year flare this way) or supplements like guarana can increase blood pressure and affect those with cardiovascular disease.

✨Can I take this long term? Certain supplements are best for short term use only for example Kava is recommended for no longer than 4 weeks to not cause liver damage.

✨ Do I really need this? Just because your BFF is taking a supplement doesn’t mean it’s right for you! I’m a gal who loves supplements but have trimmed down the list of what I’m taking. I don’t need to take every supplement I see on Instagram to feel my best!

Be sure to check with a doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement routine!

Three Simple Steps I took to reduce Bloating and Inflammation in my Body.

Reducing inflammation can transform your energy, mood, and even your skin. I often notice inflammation showing up as puffiness in my face..

I started by cutting back on these big triggers:

🚫 Gums & fillers like guar gum and xanthum gum (often hiding in “healthy” foods & snacks). I switched from the vegan protein that I had used for years to a grass fed beef protein.

🚫 Refined sugar- I look at sugar content for EVERYTHING and aim for less than the 25g per day recommended by the American Heart Association for women.

🚫 Gluten & dairy (common culprits for bloating and joint pain) . I learned I was gluten and lactose intolerant through DNA testing.

Bonus:

✅ I Add in Omega 3 Fatty Acids through supplementation and food and also use Quercetin a supplement that is often thought of as a natural antihistamine that can be helpful for inflammation.

Honestly, I started to see puffiness and inflammation disappear within a month and continue to reduce while following this plan.

See below for my favorite supplements that I use in my inflammation reduction journey!

As a pharmacist, I would never ignore this trio of supplements when it comes to bloating and gut health.

🔥 My supplement trio that never fails:

• Probiotic for gut balance ( I take before bedtime to stay regular)

• Digestive enzymes (a MUST if you’re 50+)

• Magnesium glycinate to keep things moving + keep YOU calm

My favorites are by @pureencapsulations — and total menopause MUST HAVES.

Also, 💯 THE fan-favorite I keep hearing in my DMs:

Bloating SOS by @glowbyhormoneuniversity — the product friends recommend to friends… who recommend to more friends.

Formulated with Morosil (red blood orange extract) for antioxidant support, inflammation balance, and smoother digestion.

As a pharmacist, I don’t dislike supplements, I actually really LIKE them for midlife health.

It’s just that I would recommend these three shifts first before spending another dollar on supplements.

What worked in the past may not work now in midlife, simple lifestyle tweaks may be just what is needed to feel vibrant and energized.

Before buying anything new, start here:

✔️ Eat enough protein so your body feels supported- including breakfast…aim for about 30g per meal .

✔️ Stabilize blood sugar (this alone helps energy + cravings) by prioritizing fiber and protein and movement especially after larger meals.

✔️ Reduce daily inflammation through simple habits like reducing inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy and sugar and avoiding processed foods.

Because when those things improve…many menopause symptoms improve too and you can truly feel your best at every stage of life! Supplements are the icing on the cake, not the only go to!

Three 3️⃣ UNDERRATED Drug Store Finds to support bladder health in menopause: Pharmacist Approved!

Many women experience Genitourinary Symptoms in Menopause such as UTIs and Overactive Bladder due to a decrease in estrogen.

✨Prelief- is a calcium based product that takes 90% of acid out of acidic foods like coffee, or tomatoes. These foods can all be a bladder irritant for women with a painful bladder, overactive bladder or just after having a UTI. Prelief ( calcium glycerophosphate) is considered to be a medical food for women with Interstitial Cystitis as it can be helpful for reducing bladder pain . It is helpful for those with GI issues that cannot tolerate acidic foods too.

✨Azo Standard- @azoproducts has several very useful products including Azo Standard. This is known as Pyridium or Phenazopyridine by prescription and can ease pain and burning upon urination. Note - the red coloration of urine caused by these tablets will not interfere with bacterial growth when determining if you have a UTI but may affect the quick urine dipstick in office that can be affected by the color.

✨ Good Clean Love- feminine dryness in menopause can cause an increased chance of UTIs and overactive bladder symptoms. Many feminine products may contain harsh chemicals. This is brand is a fantastic option that can be found at your corner drugstore!

This post is for information only and is not meant to be medical advice. Please see your medical practitioner if you are experiencing bladder issues.

50% of all women will experience a UTI at least once in their lifetime.

Here are my top strategies on preventing UTIs.

🍰Reduce Sugar- even holiday dried fruits are high in sugar which can provide ‘fuel’ for the bacteria that cause UTIs.
Use the American Heart Association recommendation of 25g of sugar per day of added sugar or less for women to prevent disease as a STARTING point in sugar reduction and read labels to achieve this goal.

🦠Probiotic: This will boost your natural amount of good bacteria and help to prevent infection. A healthy gut also boosts immunity and mood which are also essential during the holiday season.

Look for - lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 (shown to be very effective in studies).

🔆 D- Mannose: a natural sugar that provides a preferred surface for bacteria in your urinary tract. The bacteria will stick to the D- Mannose and then be excreted out instead of sticking to your bladder lining.

D- Mannose is very soothing to a painful bladder as well. This is HANDS DOWN the number one product I hear positive feedback on in my DM’s. My favorite is @westcoastmint .

✨ Feminine Lubricant- a decrease in estrogen can cause feminine dryness and an environment where the bacteria that cause UTIs thrive.

Check out @glowbyhormoneuniversity’s Daily Intimate Hydrator with colAsk your doctor if supplementing with vaginal estrogen is right for you. This can be imperative in reducing the Genitourinary symptoms of menopause even if using BHRT.

I recommend digestive enzymes for gut health as we get older. Mineral Moon’s product also contains senna leaves that can be helpful for the laxative effect if you are traveling or experiencing issues from a medication or a GLP-1.

I also recommend probiotics and magnesium to help with staying regular.
