Six weeks in the living room… all for this moment. ✨

Chaos, dust, and kids sleeping on the couch — there were nights it felt like the mess would never end. We were tired and stretched thin, wondering if we’d regret taking this on. But underneath all the hard moments was the hope of what was waiting at the finish line.

Little by little, the dormer started to feel real. The outside still isn’t finished, but stepping into those rooms for the first time with the kids running around… it was everything we’d been working toward.

After years of squeezing into one bedroom, we finally have space to breathe. The house feels calmer, lighter, and like such a gift.

It’s been hard, but it’s also been everything we hoped for. And for the first time, it finally feels like we truly have enough space for our little family. 🏡✨

Late nights, paint clothes, and a lot of tape later… Hazel’s checkered wall is done. She picked Deep Mauve by Benjamin Moore for the color, and the checkers are a little nod to the theme she chose (I’ll save the full reveal for later 💕).

I’ve kept Fossil (BM) running through the dormers — it feels calm and soft, not stark, but still clean and bright. Nugget curled up on the floor while we pulled the tape, Nala found her perfect sun spot on the trailer, Gryffin wandered around proud with his empty beer bottle, and Kyle kept things moving outside.

We’re tired, but the finishes are going in — flooring, trim, all the details — and we’re finally in the homestretch. Thought we’d have the kids moved in this weekend, but it’s looking like mid-week instead. Either way, we’re close ✨

I pulled together three different design ideas for the boys’ room, each with its own vibe.

First up is Vintage Explorer — maps, plaid, and that old-world adventure feel.

Then Modern Industrial — darker tones, metal details, and some really cool engine prints, because Evan loves anything mechanical.

And Rad Racing — bold red, checkerboard, and all the car artwork… because like most boys, Evan is all about cars.

Just like Hazel’s room, we’re keeping the same beds and dresser — hand-me-downs from my brother and my dad. No need to replace everything when we can work with what we already have. A new rug, fresh paint, and some fun accents can totally transform the space.

Evan’s already picked his favorite — and since Gryffin’s still too little to weigh in, his big brother made the call. Which one do you think he chose?

I thought I knew which design Hazel would choose… turns out I was wrong 👀 But when I asked Evan which one he thought she’d like, he actually guessed the right one (still amazed by that).

I pulled together three different design ideas for Hazel’s room just to see what direction we might go in.

There’s Moody Vintage with darker tones and a cozy patterned rug.

Rad Girl with checkerboard bedding and bold art.

And Groovy Flower with big floral accents and a colorful rainbow rug.

For all three, I kept the bed and dresser the same. The bed is hers already and the dresser has been in the family for generations. No sense in blowing money on all new furniture when we can work with what we have.

A fresh rug, new paint, and a few accent pieces can completely change the vibe without starting from scratch.

We’ve been dreaming about more space up here, and it’s finally starting to take shape. The dormers went from bare framing to fresh drywall, and now Evan and Hazel are helping pick colors for some fun accent walls in their rooms (big decisions when you’re 6 and 3!).

This coming week we’ll wrap up spackling, priming, and painting. Then it’s on to flooring, trim, light fixtures, and those last little details that make it feel complete.

Outside, the roofing is ready and the siding is on the way — piece by piece, this project is moving forward. It finally feels like the finish line is in sight, at least on the inside.

Back at it again with my favorite design experiment!

There’s something about building in the middle of your real, everyday life that makes the dust and chaos feel different. This isn’t just a project on a job site — it’s our home, our kids’ space, and the walls that hold the loud, messy, beautiful parts of our family.

Last week, our Houseal Construction crew stepped away from other jobs to spend a few days here, and in the thick summer heat, they worked their hearts out to get this dormer standing. Watching it take shape so quickly was incredible — not just because it’s progress, but because it’s possibility.

Hazel will soon have her own room, the boys will have theirs, and we’ll finally reclaim our living room from the maze of mattresses it’s been this past week (though we know there are still several more weeks ahead). In the meantime, we’re making it work — movie nights, staying up later than we should, laughing in the mess, and knowing this season won’t last forever.

One day, we’ll look back at this project and remember not just the walls we built, but the nights we spent together in the middle of it all. That’s the thing about building your forever home — it’s not just about the finished space. It’s about the life you live while you’re making it.

If your fridge always feels overstuffed… you need to see this.

We’ve been trying to eat healthier, meal prep more, and just keep our kitchen functioning better overall — but our old fridge/freezer combo wasn’t cutting it.

We needed space for all the fresh produce (seriously, why does lettuce take up an entire shelf??) — and running out to the garage freezer every time we wanted to grab venison or frozen meals? Not the vibe.

So we made the switch: a stand-up fridge and a full stand-up freezer. More room, better flow, and way less digging.

No ice maker or water dispenser (our old ones were broken anyway), but the extra storage has been a total game changer.

It’s been a minute since I shared an update on what we having going on at the cabin.

As you know if you’ve been around awhile, my kids all share one bedroom. We love our cabin and have done so well adapting to the space we have (even as our family has continued to grow), but we are so ready for this next step.

Right now we have one main bedroom and a secondary “bedroom” or play space connected by this catwalk. Filling in the space beside the catwalk to create more floor space is the first step to creating another bedroom up here. Once the floors are in, we will be putting on dormers along the front to gain straight walls as opposed to the A-frame we have had until now.

This change is only going to get us about 150-ish square feet, but my goodness is it worth it! So many more options for storage, organization, and just space to LIVE!

Every detail is planned with purpose to make the space work for our family... not just today, but years from now. It is not fast, and it is not always pretty in progress, but it is ours.

Turning this loft into a real bedroom—one weekend and one project at a time. While we’re still mid-renovation (hello spackle dust and missing IKEA parts), I wanted to share some of the cozy pieces we’ve added to make this space feel lived-in even while we work. Linking the curtains we used, a similar dresser and rug, and a lamp that gives that same warm, soft glow we love up here.

Building the big stuff takes time, but these little layers of decor are what make it feel like home already.

Our mudroom is clean(ish) and I’m calling it a win.

For a family of 5, this space does a lot of heavy lifting—yes, there are still backpacks, bike helmets, and Kyle’s tools (because: life), but it works for us and that’s what matters.

Sharing a few of the things that help keep it functional—hooks, baskets, and the butcher block bench we put together that I’m super proud of.
