A room this large can be surprisingly hard to get right. With soaring ceilings, a 17-foot fireplace wall, and a generous footprint, this family room didn’t need more “stuff”—it needed the right living room layout, scale, and layers to make it feel warm, connected, and inviting. For our ProjectRusticContemporaryRanch family room, we created multiple conversation areas with a large sectional and four accent chairs, then layered in an oversized rug, custom drapery, sculptural lighting, large-scale art, and plenty of natural texture. The floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace received a lime slurry treatment, which softened the entire room. Changing original brick can be controversial, and I certainly don’t think every brick fireplace needs to be painted or covered. In this case, my clients strongly disliked the original brick, and across a 17-foot wall, it carried too much visual weight for the quieter, more contemporary palette they wanted. The lime slurry softened the color while allowing some of the brick’s natural texture and variation to remain. The before felt expansive but a little disconnected. The after feels grounded, comfortable, and intentional—proof that in a large living room, scale matters just as much as style. One of my favorite parts of a transformation like this is seeing how the furniture plan, textiles, art, and styling can completely change the way a room feels.
