Still not over this 90s nostalgia tea party I threw with my friends and our daughters. I found this farm tea set I evidently got for Christmas in 1994 and my parents had held on to… what a great way to enjoy it! Chatting with my girlfriends while our daughters played happily in their dresses and helped pick out their bow colors… What a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

We threw together a dinner party for a couple friends this weekend and I didn’t have anything red, white, and blue… nothing against them, but if you combine a tablecloth, some flowers, and some interesting tableware, you have a special party! I’m trying to host more this year but still keep it laid-back. That doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful though!

I had basically given up on finding a rug that was the right size for this room, but there are great custom options now! A rug that’s the right size, filling the room under at least the front legs of all the furniture, especially in a high-quality natural fiber like wool, makes a space feel so much more comfortable and luxurious.

Lucy’s room was already adorable but the new rug, a more functional and pink-trimmed Roman shade, and some art updates made it feel even nicer. And some additional toys and dolls made it feel more like hers. 💕

My daughter's room was really cute, but needed some upgrades upgrades for function and to make it a little more elegant. First I swapped the Roman shade for this much nicer one… and then the RUG! This made the biggest difference. I found a custom size rug from Sisal Rugs Direct because this room is so long and skinny.

It's a comfortable wool and it comes with a backing attached so it's super easy to lay down. Using a rug the right size gave us enough space for all of her stuff. I was able to clear out some things, get some toy organizers, and then do some final styling touches to make this room feel so lovely and special for her.

I'm going to introduce you to a favorite soup in our house! Otto requested this soup the other day and I figured I would share it with you. The kids call it “Stanley Special,” but I’m pretty sure it’s just a simple Italian sausage white bean soup.

I started making this years ago, inspired by one I think they have it Olive Garden, but this version is dairy free. You can also do it with potatoes instead of beans, but this one is so easy because everything comes from a can.😂

2 pounds of Italian sausage (pork or turkey, though pork is better for sure)
2 onions
3-4 cloves garlic
3 cups broth
2 cans white beans
2 cans diced tomatoes
1/2 bag spinach
Parmesan for serving

I am all about efficiency, so I always use this meat chopper thing instead of a spoon to break up ground meat!

I also hate the smell of garlic on my fingers but I have broken many a garlic press before and they are so hard to clean, so I use this great rocking one. Linking both these tools in my LTK.

Cook for like 30 minutes and it’s done! I add a little parmesan on top because we are low dairy over here.

Sharing the secret to painting a room with just one coat! I learned this on Instagram years ago and it’s life-changing! The trick is, you don’t want to keep stretching the paint farther on your roller. Just paint a 3 ft.² area (or in this case I did a 2 ft.² area because I had a less than perfect roller and a very dark color to go over). Once it starts to get thin, stop and reload your roller!

Edging is a little harder, you may need to do a partial second coat with the brush, or maybe try an edging tool for better coverage. I think I’ll try that next actually!

I’ve totally been there… curtains/window treatments are one of the first things you need when you move in for privacy and light blocking, but they’re expensive and it’s really hard to choose the right ones… so if you’re like me, you might end up living with the IKEA, Target, and Amazon options for a little too long.

I’ve finally decided on the right curtains for almost all of the rooms in my home now. I have a template: pinch pleats, on rings, lined, linen or velvet. Trim tape for some color: texture except on the velvet.

This house was a major fixer upper, and we completely redid every surface in the kitchen. On the cheap, entirely ourselves except for the countertops. But the really amazing thing is that I still love it.

How?

I chose timeless fundamentals like white cabinets and a slate look floor. The white backsplash could’ve felt boring, but I‘ve added interest with things like vintage plates on the walls. I initially did industrial look wood shelves next to the sink, which then felt really dated so I replaced with some white ones with traditional corbels. I swapped the brass hardware for a more timeless polished nickel last year. I replaced the earthy modern block print café curtain with a high-quality off-white one last year too. And of course I’ve changed the styling.

But because I stuck with basics, I’ve been able to keep the foundation the same, and still feel so grateful for my simple, small, but beautiful kitchen!

I’m so grateful to live in the neighborhood I grew up in, and I walked past this house a million times before we found out we might be able to buy it and make it ours. My mom took me here once when I was a kid, some neighborhood organization thing, and I remember sitting in this breakfast nook and appreciating the built-ins.😂🤓 And now I get to store my vases and cookbooks and pretty cocktail glasses here.

(What I didn’t realize back then was that the glass doors were not original…! I’m guessing someone replaced them in the 80s and did the best they could, but I just try not to look at them too closely. Still so cute!)

Hosting beautiful parties inside and outside is one of my life goals but it’s taken me a few decades to build the muscle. Turns out all you need is some beautiful table setting options, colorful fresh food, and children to bring the joyful energy ✨.

I've been helping my friend update her home, but we weren't sure how to solve the slatted blinds problem in this breakfast area. Enter these lovely Roman shades from Neutral Curtains. They are double on one headrail and they easily replaced the slatted blinds on the doors. We also changed the light fixture and added a nice table and chair set… but we had to start with function first, and these blinds needed to block the sunlight and add privacy. I am amazed at how much we were able to transform my friend's breakfast area with this one change! We started with a new table and chair set… these are from Costway and are super affordable and still solid wood and sturdy quality. I absolutely love the chair with this classic rattan caning, and this lovely soft wood color. Plus I always love mixing the table color with the chairs.

I never really considered painting it cause it’s sooo much work, and I couldn’t commit to that big of a change to an old house. But it’s not my favorite wood color and I never really loved it. But the other day I was daydreaming about decorating a new house and I felt a little sad to think of not having the original wood trim anchoring things. Otto’s room had almost no storage, so we just kept stuff sort of pushed against the walls on the floor. 🤦‍♀️ Until I had an idea. We also didn't use his closet at all, but I found a really simple $129 closet system and my friend's husband helped install it 🙏❤️. He custom fit it into this kind of funky old closet, even working around the original angled shoe shelf (we have them in almost all our closets). We didn’t need the top part of the shelf unit, or the other bars that it came with, but we even got an extra bar out of it that I’ve been hanging Lucy‘s summer dresses on.

He’s a 7-year-old boy so he doesn’t have any clothes that need to go in the closet, but now we have room for all his books and toys that we totally didn't before. So simple and gave us so much storage!

I had a corkboard in my room above my desk for years and lovingly added photos, art, keepsakes, movie, and concert tickets… I wanted to create some special places for my kids to put whatever they want up too!

Honestly, my overthinking self took forever to do this because I wanted a real wood frame and the ones I originally ordered from Amazon never came… So I had to compromise with these, but same-day pick up is pretty appealing! These are 24 x 36 which is pretty big.

I have a slightly smaller wood frame one above my desk in my current office, too!
