Rewearing some of my favourite pieces which are the basics in my wardrobe, yet they are anything but basic. These basics I wear over and over, season after season, year after year because they form the foundations of a great wearable wardrobe. Without great basics you’ll always feel like something is missing in your wardrobe. This is also why understanding your style is key to understanding what basics your wardrobe needs. My wardrobe basics are different to yours. For example, I couldn’t be without loafers but I have clients that wouldn’t even consider them. Likewise, so many of my Personal Styling clients love a leather biker jacket, but it’s just not my style and I’d rather wear a blazer. All of this is perfectly fine because your wardrobe should represent you and your style identity. It shouldn’t be like everyone else’s wardrobe. Establish your style and you’ll know what basics your wardrobe will need. I know some of you will be thinking that this is all well and good, but I have no idea what my style is so here are a couple of tips to get you thinking a little more about your style: • Style Words - think of a handful of words that describe your style. Examples are: edgy, boho, feminine, sexy, elegant, masculine, feminine, minimalist, dramatic… • Gather a mood board of looks you love. Look at the mood board and identify the common elements between them. This should give you clarity about what style you like. Put the two together and you’ll start to gain clarity about your own unique style identity and be able to identify what items your wardrobe needs to be functional and work hard for you.
