In my grandparents' Berkshires house, we kept the sink and stove in their original locations, preserved the existing window, and left the exposed beams intact. To make the kitchen work better for modern living, we knocked down a wall, expanded the footprint by 50%, added a second window, moved the fridge, updated the electrical, and installed all new cabinetry and appliances.
