As we were cleaning up after hosting our new community here in VA, our hearts felt so full. Two years ago, when we moved here, we never imagined we’d meet these people — doing life together, raising our kids together, sharing meals, faith, and memories. Making friends in your 30s is hard, especially with a partner and kids involved. But it’s also been such a hopeful season — a reminder that there are still good people trying to do good in the world. Through the ups and downs of friendships, I’m learning to let go of unrealistic expectations and pride, while becoming more aware of my own capacity, weaknesses, and strengths. Maybe meaningful community isn’t built by being everything to everyone, but by consistently showing up, as you are, for the people meant for this season of life.
