Sometimes it’s good to be bad. For instance, we’ve been taught that quitting is a bad thing, but what if I were to tell you it was one of the best things I’ve ever done?

It’s been two years since I left my job to pursue Wear to Wander full time and I couldn’t be more thankful for that decision. In two years I’ve learned invaluable lessons, made precious friendships and found my own voice.

If you’re wanting to step into this Instagram space or looking for encouragement in your journey shoot me a message. I don’t have a course to sell. Or a product. Or even a plan. Just a passion for seeing women succeed and want to share what I’ve learned along the way.

It was this time last year that I was heading to the mountains with Mr. WTW and we were setting goals for the months ahead. Little did I know how different my life would look in a years time. I know this because I pulled up my (digital) journal that I’ve been keeping for years. Do you keep one too?

Some days have more extensive writings, others just snippets of thoughts. Doing this has helped me sort through ideas and come back to check on my goals. Other times it’s just nice to look back on trips with the happiest memories.

Paris is one of those places I have written about and each trip I take makes me fall more in love with the city. Each trip I’ve picked up little mementoes, one I wear on a necklace almost daily. What do you like to bring home from trips as a memento?

I grew up on the prettiest beaches in Florida and I’m sharing all the details for you to fall in love with my hometown area! Visit Destin and 30A for this year but make sure you take this guide!

#LTKGiftGuide #LTKxMadewell #LTKFestival
Rain or shine, most mornings I make my way to the dog park. One day I noticed an elderly man leaving his giant chocolate lab behind and driving off. My heart instantly sunk. What I first thought was him abandoning the dog turned out to be one of the sweetest daily routines I’ve come to love.

The man, Sam, can’t walk Louie anymore so he drops him off at the park and drives the fenced perimeter of the area. Honking the whole way so Louie can “chase” him. I’ve started cheering Louie on each morning as he wildly runs after the car and know now that Sam comes back to throw a ball after a few minutes of car chasing.

Sam wears the same outfit daily and loves to tell the silliest Grandpa jokes. He has a new one everyday and I can always tell he’s excited to share it. I’ve learned that his wife is in a care facility and he takes the same jokes there to “make the old people laugh”.

If you are wanting to go on vacation but can’t at the moment I hope this little story reminds you that people, and places, are not always as they first appear. Go out and explore your town and learn to appreciate the details you’ve missed on the first go around. The full guide to my hometown area is almost finished on Wear to Wander and I’ll send out an email so you can discover one of my favorite places, too!

Today happens to be my sweet mom’s birthday, so what better time than to take you all with me on a staycation in my hometown area. From an early age she taught me about the 10 minute vacation where she’d get away to the beach and watch the waves come in. This was a regular occurrence for her and from time to time I’d go with her.

We’d dig out feet into the sand and focus on the crashing waves. I always knew our time was up when my feet had sunk in and my ankles were now covered. Sometimes we’d talk when the waves were quieter but most of these little vacations were spent in silence. Much can be said and felt even in silence, and getting to that place of quiet comfort is the vacation I often need. So whether you have ten minutes, or a whole weekend to explore I hope you take this as a sign to enjoy where you’re living. Find your spot for a ten minute vacation and mentally take it easy.

Many of your are heading to my hometown area of 30a and Destin this spring and summer, so I’m sharing my favorite spots from a true local’s perspective. If you are heading there and have a question about it, please reach out! I love my beach town home and will happily answer questions you have.

Tonight’s looks all include pieces from @heidicareydesigns. I’d highly recommend their beautiful line of pajamas and accessories for your staycation starting point! #heidicareydesign

Long before I started Wear to Wander, I was creating handmade jewelry. For all I know, some of you may even wear it still. From the beginning my sister was my number one cheerleader, similar to the way she is here.

We’d have long calls discussing improvements for current designs and talk over inspiration for new pieces. After the first year of business, she asked me if I was ready for something bigger. That’s when she introduced me to a friend who helped me get into a dream location- the Pebble Beach Golf Club.

I still have to pinch myself sometimes when I think about that opportunity to not only be sold in the store but also set up a display for the AT&T tournament. Seeing Carmel/Pebble Beach during that time was a whirlwind of excitement and one of the most memorable moments for many reasons.

All of this to say, I’m certain that the dreams we see fulfilled are in large part due to the hard work we put in. But I’m even more certain that without the support system of our cheerleaders and sounding boards, many of those dreams would never come to fruition or even be realized. Thank you sissy, for always showing your support.

For her entire life, my grandmother cut her own hair and set it in foam curlers ever. Single. Night. She taught me how to do it and some night would even let me do most of the curls. In the morning she’d brush through the tight curls and spray on so much Aussie mega hold hair spray that it’s a wonder she got it out each night.

This peculiar memory came about today while I was sitting in my stylist’s chair chatting with her about cosmetology school. She mentioned that the school she went to was old school and mostly taught roller sets. Out of this, we started talking over the concept of not despising small beginnings.

While she didn’t go to one of the top schools, I’ve watched her chase after continuing education to better herself and the experience for her clients. It got me thinking about how and where I can continue to grow. Which leaves me curious- what is a skill you’d like to improve in yourself? I suppose the new year offers an opportunity or “reason” to attack it, but what if instead we start now?

On Monday I began my first official volunteer day at the art museum where I get to teach basic printmaking and watercolor. It’s a fast paced day full of opportunities to treat everyone with kindness and introduce them to something I love.

Towards the end of my day, I met a woman who told me that she is a fashion teacher at a university. When it was time to collect the artwork she had created, she let me know she would be keeping the carved “block” from the printmaking area. It’s something most people throw away as they only want the printed image created from it.

Only for her, it was something different. She explained that her son is blind and she wanted to take it home so he could get an idea of what she created. I’ll never be able to look at those little boards without thinking about that. I’m so grateful that she took the time to explain that to me and offer a different perspective.

Life is precious. I think this is something we can all agree on. Each day is a gift and we are met with moments, choices and possibilities. Occasionally, even an opportunity to witness a different perspective to learn from.

Whenever I was feeling sick my grandmother would scramble me an egg, toast a slice of bread and serve up a small cup of applesauce on a tray. She swore hydration, rest and good plain food would get me back to feeling better.

Most of the time, it did. If I wasn’t feeling too bad we’d eat it on the back porch and she would tell me about the birds that were in the yard. Or talk to me about the flowers that were coming up.

There were hydrangeas and camellias. Giant red geraniums. Snapdragons and lantana. I’m sure there were plenty of times that she told me what flowers were out there, but for whatever reason I remember it most when we’d sit there in the quiet mornings eating breakfast on the porch.

Oddly, this makes me grateful for not feeling well those few times. It slowed down life and I was able to listen. Did your grandmother teach you about flowers or something else? I’d love to know what you learned from her!

In 2014, I started a jewelry business and hand made bangles, necklaces, and more. Much like Wear to Wander, I started it without realizing who it would bring into my life. Fast forward to last month, and I found myself spending the night in Scottsdale, Arizona at the home of one of the dearest friends I met through that business. We’ve remained long distance friends for nearly ten years, but the distance hasn’t interrupted the friendship. Katie’s been a constant and we’ve been through the ups and downs of life together. When I called her to see if I could stay the night on my cross country trip in February, there wasn’t a moments hesitation. The answer was of course.

Often we make life decisions with the hopes of one thing happening, but then something or someone else comes along. In this case it was one someone who is a personal hype woman. Katie is a a true gem of a human, and I’m grateful our paths crossed at that moment. I didn’t know how much of a friend like her I’d need through the last few years. So, let’s be like Katie and cheer on the friends in our lives! Check in on a friend and see how they are doing tonight. Set up a coffee date or even a FaceTime coffee date and find out how you can cheer them on in their life, too!

A bit of a side note: if you have never heard of Marco Polo, check it out. This isn’t an ad, it’s just the facts. It’s been the best way for me to keep in touch with my friends with kids.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. It’s something we all have heard for years, but if we were all honest we would admit that we do that at least sometimes. I was recently out to dinner and my server was a nice young guy, but I made assumptions based off of what I could see. I thought for sure he would “fit” more into the skater crowd.

At the end of the meal, we started chatting and I learned more about him. How a simple request his father gave him as a child turned into a lifelong habit of writing the total in large numbers at the bottom of the bill for someone with poor eyesight. How he had seen nearly every football movie and the ones he loved most were from my childhood. How at 20 he had already learned that give and take in a relationship was the best way to have shared experiences.

In a five minute conversation, the scope of my lens on this guy had completely changed and I was a bit embarrassed that my initial thoughts had such a limited viewpoint. Learn from my mistake, and be willing to start conversations with others who you might think you know. Because more than likely, you’ll find that the world is full of surprises and when you show an interest in learning about others they come to life. It was an honor to have Sean as our server. He will almost certainly never know the impact of our short talk, but I’ll remain grateful always for it

In Pilates you start with the basics. Whether you’re on a mat or the reformer, you build your foundation first then progress. When I started Pilates a few years back, I thought the basics were easy and I needed more of a challenge. I’d add heavy spring loads, high hand weights, increased bands. It wasn’t until a teacher flat out told me “if you’re not getting work out of the basics you’re doing it wrong”. My first reaction was ego driven and I thought she was wrong. Once pride settled, I was able to see just how right she was.

That began my quest to do it “right” to the best of my ability. This required a different type of focus that was more aware of my muscles and form. Next week ends my in studio training with the most incredible set of teachers in training and master trainer. I’ll still have many more hours of observation/teaching/training to do, but it’s a foundational block to the process.

In the same way, the basics that we have in our closet are the essentials to build upon. I’ve been expanding each section to “The Essentials” so that you have more options, and I’m excited to share tonight’s essential: the basic white tee. It’s plain. It’s classic. It’ll never go out of style. Just like the rest of what I call “The Essentials”.

School is starting back up soon for most, and I keep hearing from friends about their last travel hurrah of the summer season. There’s something so special about that last trip before kids get back into school. Somehow it feels like summer just began, but I remember it lasting for what felt like forever as a kid.

I’ll be taking a few end of summer trips soon, and wanted to put together a few looks that I could take with me. Each of these looks comes exclusively from @Saks and I’m highlighting my favorite skin care line that I can get there as well. It’s one of the best for making my skin glow, and after a full summer in head to to sunscreen- my skin needs a little extra attention.

Will you be taking any last trips this summer? I’d love to hear about where you’ll be heading! I’ll be selecting a few of your trips and styling them this week to help you pack for the vacation. #Saks #SaksPartner

Beauty
We grew up watching a lot of black and white films at my house, and many of the scenes from those movies still play over in my mind. Outside of books, these films were a portal to other countries and cultures and the idyllic view of each created a narrative in my mind of a world I wanted to explore. There were two women in particular that I loved to watch on screen and they both had the surrname of Hepburn. Tonight’s iconic style focus is on Audrey Hepburn, but a full break down of Katharine Hepburn’s outfits will certainly be coming!

Both on screen and off, Audrey Hepburn’s style is not only still noteworthy but applicable to our modern times. She was at the beginning of a major shift in fashion, and the choices she made created classic styles that we all wear today. If you look closely, you’ll notice that a few of the pieces from this collection can also be found on other style icons I have covered. It’s a testament that shows classic pieces truly never go out of style. There will be small tweaks and trends, but the essentials of a classic won’t change. Who is your style icon you’d like to see covered next?
