I’m so grateful to live in the neighborhood I grew up in, and I walked past this house a million times before we found out we might be able to buy it and make it ours. My mom took me here once when I was a kid, some neighborhood organization thing, and I remember sitting in this breakfast nook and appreciating the built-ins.😂🤓 And now I get to store my vases and cookbooks and pretty cocktail glasses here.

(What I didn’t realize back then was that the glass doors were not original…! I’m guessing someone replaced them in the 80s and did the best they could, but I just try not to look at them too closely. Still so cute!)

Hosting beautiful parties inside and outside is one of my life goals but it’s taken me a few decades to build the muscle. Turns out all you need is some beautiful table setting options, colorful fresh food, and children to bring the joyful energy ✨.

I've been helping my friend update her home, but we weren't sure how to solve the slatted blinds problem in this breakfast area. Enter these lovely Roman shades from Neutral Curtains. They are double on one headrail and they easily replaced the slatted blinds on the doors. We also changed the light fixture and added a nice table and chair set… but we had to start with function first, and these blinds needed to block the sunlight and add privacy. We chose a lined Roman shade with an edge binding. Such a difference and so simple!

I am amazed at how much we were able to transform my friend's breakfast area with this one change! We started with a new table and chair set… these are from Costway and are super affordable and still solid wood and sturdy quality. I absolutely love the chair with this classic rattan caning, and this lovely soft wood color. Plus I always love mixing the table color with the chairs.

We also changed the light fixture and Roman shades instead of the slatted blinds on the door. What a big change we made and still so simple and affordable! Linking everything in my LTK and my bio.

I never really considered painting it cause it’s sooo much work, and I couldn’t commit to that big of a change to an old house. But it’s not my favorite wood color and I never really loved it. But the other day I was daydreaming about decorating a new house and I felt a little sad to think of not having the original wood trim anchoring things. I even think it works well with some dark antique wood pieces, nothing is too overpowering or dusty old lady. Here’s to blooming where you’re planted, I guess??

Otto’s room had almost no storage, so we just kept stuff sort of pushed against the walls on the floor. 🤦‍♀️ Until I had an idea. We also didn't use his closet at all, but I found a really simple $129 closet system and my friend's husband helped install it 🙏❤️. He custom fit it into this kind of funky old closet, even working around the original angled shoe shelf (we have them in almost all our closets). We didn’t need the top part of the shelf unit, or the other bars that it came with, but we even got an extra bar out of it that I’ve been hanging Lucy‘s summer dresses on.

He’s a 7-year-old boy so he doesn’t have any clothes that need to go in the closet, but now we have room for all his books and toys that we totally didn't before. So simple and gave us so much storage!

I had a corkboard in my room above my desk for years and lovingly added photos, art, keepsakes, movie, and concert tickets… I wanted to create some special places for my kids to put whatever they want up too!

Honestly, my overthinking self took forever to do this because I wanted a real wood frame and the ones I originally ordered from Amazon never came… So I had to compromise with these, but same-day pick up is pretty appealing! These are 24 x 36 which is pretty big.

I have a slightly smaller wood frame one above my desk in my current office, too!

My friend and I totally transformed her living room with so many amazing changes, but one that we debated about forever was the chairs. She tried just one, but decided we really needed a pair, but that’s expensive (and/or only available in beige)… We found this beautiful light blue woven texture armchair that’s an amazing price. It swivels, rocks, and looks so elegant!

Full disclosure, the seat cushion is not as soft and comfy as a down wrapped one would be, but again… The price is right. Plus, her kids love swiveling in these!

I have loved white bedding since I first started decorating my bedrooms and it just can do no wrong! The trendy patterns come and go and honestly the reason isn’t that they’re better—it’s that the brands want you to keep shopping. I’ve loved my white linen sheets for years now and I keep an extra pair and different seasons of duvets and quilts (all white). It’s not boring cause it’s so pretty. Have you tried all white bedding?!

I’ve seen the charming aesthetic reels of “romanticizing your life” and it’s not quite this… every day suburban mom.

But I think that’s what I’m doing this year… I don’t need a European vacation, perfect morning routine, fresh flowers on a marble island… just swapping the garland over the sink for the kids makes me feel so happy and calm in my home!

My house is not immaculate, and there are usually toys and kid art
around, but it never looks like a bomb went off. I’m pretty sure this is why…

Two things: I set up a good system, and then I model.

1) I choose nice stuff to store our toys that’s large enough and fits in the rest of our home. None of those white plastic or melamine shelves that are too small for anything.
2) I give my kids a home where the grown-ups pick up. I don’t leave my clothes on the floor or chairs, so they’ve never seen anyone do that. I ask them to pick up their toys. (Sometimes I end up doing it, but still… Then they are used to a clean home.)

That way, we never have to do a massive deep clean, it’s always just a little maintenance stuff.

Step 1 is easier than step 2 if you’re struggling though, and it’s definitely a mindset thing… But even if you struggle with this, you can use your design brain to think of storage solutions that work for your home in the best case scenario and start there.

Im a purist for down comforters and natural fiber bedding, and I just found the perfect comforter to put in my basement guest room. My home is lovely, but it’s not my dream, and it took me years of pining and feeling frustrated with its quirks, wishing for something different, and then I realized… I can love my home just the way it is, and still want something different in the future. It’s uncomfortable for me to not have a plan laid out, but with all the turns my life has taken the past few years, I’ve gotten a little more used to that.

I’m honestly so happy living in my home now. I’ve made the changes I could, never knocking down walls or doing a full renovation but starting with a foundation I liked (lots of warm white paint) and then adding beautiful details.

There’s no point feeling frustrated when it doesn’t make any sense for me to have bought my dream home at any point in my life thus far! But I can do so much, and feel so grateful, with what I have.

Even if you can’t do anything to your home, not even paint, you can still hang a Valentine’s garland, pick out dishes that make you happy, get yourself some fresh flowers…! No need to wait for the perfect home.

I searched for months and could not find antique or vintage dressers or nightstands for the guest room I’m working on in my basement. I love an antique when I can find one, but it wasn’t happening!

But I finally found these charming dark wood nightstands from @hulala_home. They’re solid wood construction and have some beautiful details that make them feel perfect for this sort of vintage-inspired guest room. Very happy and honestly a little surprised at how cute this room turned out! It’s a basement so I didn’t have high hopes… I threw something together before Christmas, but it needed a little bit more cohesive planning, including better nightstands, lamps, and styling… And the all white bedding really helped to make it not feel thrown together!
