When we were budgeting for our home renovation, we created a new budget, and separated it by each room. We created subcategories for each room for all of the expenditures: labor costs, vanity, bathroom fixtures, tile, sconces, grout, mirror, etc. This helped us to stay on budget. Having an “unforeseen” renovation budget category also helped us stay on track because there were quite a few things that came up, that we forgot, or didn’t know about. I can see how it would feel very overwhelming, and out of control without a clear financial plan for a renovation. We waited a while before repairing the beam on our garage because it is such a big expense, and because we didn’t want to use too much of our emergency fund. Cracked, load-bearing beam is definitely a reason to dip into the emergency fund!
