HOME DECOR ON A BUDGET

I’m a firm believer that you can make spaces look great within the bounds of your budget. I originally started this account to document our home renovation journey.

This is the niños bathroom. Our goal was to make it slightly modern and colorful, and functional.

This space was formerly a weird, long closet that was wood-paneled, and was original to the house as it was built in the 70’s.

We already had one bathroom upstairs so we decided to create another one for our niños to share.

Here are some tips to create your space on a budget:

1. Follow home decor inspiration accounts, and start browsing on Pinterest to get an idea of what you do and don’t like.

2. When you start searching for specific products, shop around! Compare prices! Download the Honey browser and app to see when your favorite things go on sale.

3. Be very specific when creating your budget for a space. For example, when looking at photos, write down everything you see: bathroom hardware, rug, shower curtain, sconces, etc, and budget for every single category that you want to include in your budget. This way there are no surprises. I would also include a subcategory called “unknown expenses” and put some money in there. This can help cover something that you might have forgotten, or an item that is slightly more expensive than anticipated.

4. Don’t settle and buy something just because it’s on sale. If you don’t love it, don’t buy it.

I’m almost done reading “I will teach you to be rich” @ramit , and I love how he has a whole section dedicated to automating finances. We have been doing this for years, including our retirement investing. Every paycheck, money is automatically diverted to our retirement accounts without my husband or I spending a second thinking about it. The money goes in, and automatically goes to our future, freeing up our time/calendar for other things that matter to us like spending time with our kids.⁣

We do a couple of budget check-ins throughout the month, and as long as I stay on top of reconciling my transactions, the most time we spend on our budget is once a month for our budget meeting!⁣

It’s all about figuring out a system that works best for you, and for us, it’s a system that requires the least amount of time to maintain.⁣

When we were budgeting for our home renovations, we knew we weren’t going into debt again. A few year ago, we did a total home renovation. Here are some things I learned:⁣
⁣
1. Start planning as far in advanced as possible. These things take time, and planning, and I’ve learned that the decisions I made that were one year in advanced were much better than those I had to make under a short time constraint.⁣
⁣
2. Establish a budget for your project. How much can you reasonably afford? Decide what it is, and if you need to wait and save up for the renovation, the extra time will give you insight on the things you really want to do, and don’t want to do in your reno.⁣
⁣
3. Break down your budget into all of the projects you want to do. For example, If you want to do several things to your home, break it down to things like: flooring, windows, bathroom reno (which can be further broken down to the things you will need to buy like a vanity mirror, a vanity, sink, sconces, vanity hardware, etc), labor, etc. The more detailed you are, the more likely you will be in budget.⁣
⁣
4. Establish a budget category called unforeseen expenses. These things will most likely come up no matter how much you plan. If you budget for it, then it won’t derail your debt-free journey.⁣
⁣

A few days ago for our giving advent, we made a snack station for all of the postal delivery people! I originally got the idea from @helmick_hacienda ! ⁣

We got some water bottles, a bulk package of snacks, and I let the kids do most of the work to assemble the station. They now look forward seeing if the delivery carriers grab snacks, and they get really happy when they do! It’s been fun to find things to do for our giving advent that’s within budget. It turns out there is LOTS to do that doesn’t require much money!⁣

This quote speaks so much truth. I remember when my daughter was a baby, and she was choking, I had to give her back thrusts to dislodge the foreign body out of her mouth. I will never forget that moment. Everything was in slow motion, and I couldn’t even find my cell phone that was in plain sight because I was so focused on getting my daughter to stop choking. For what seemed like forever (it was only a few minutes), my daughter kept struggling despite my back thrusts so I ran to the neighbor’s house and had them call 911 for me. Despite being an ER nurse, and knowing what to do, I knew that enough time had elapsed where my daughter was struggling and I needed backup. Between the time it took for me to get to my neighbor’s house, my daughter dislodged the item that was obstructing her airway and started crying (crying is great a sign that an airway is clear).⁣

I remember calling my mother-in-law after that and I remember her saying “this is one of those moments after which the sun seems a littler brighter, the grass a little greener, and the sky a little bluer.” She was right. I was so incredibly thankful that my baby girl was ok.⁣

I’ve been writing in a gratitude journal in the morning semi-regularly, and it feels like nothing can go wrong the days when I start with a grateful heart.⁣

I love an easy DIY! For the longest time after our renovation, my husband would ask me if we were ever going to put up family pictures in the house. After looking at lots of beautiful gallery wall ideas, I decided to make our own! This is how we did it:⁣

We purchased our frames from Michael’s. I have linked some very minimal ones in the @liketoknow.it app. You can sign up for their emails and receive coupons, or simply check their website for deals and coupons. The matting is from Hobby Lobby. I purchased them in February and paid $45.26 for all three. I would make sure you pick out the exact color you want. I said I wanted “white” matting without looking at the one they were going to use, and it ended up being more yellow than I hoped. ⁣

I purchased the prints from @costco online. Their prices are excellent for big prints, and I love the lustre finish. ⁣
⁣
My frames aren’t quite 24 x 36, but I should shoot for a frame size close to that. I think that minimal frames look great, just beware that they can be a little bit challenging to hang depending on how sturdy they are. The stronger the frame, the easier it is.⁣

This was inspired when I was reading “Atomic Habits” by @james_clear . He says something very similar, and I found that changing one small word makes a big difference!⁣

I specifically thought about this the other day when we had to take my husband’s car in to the mechanic because it was making weird noises. Turns out, something was really wrong with his tires, and we made the decision to move forward and pay $600 to repair his car.⁣
⁣
We like to keep our “Tires/Repairs/Maintenance” category funded, but what we had in this budget category didn’t fully cover the expense. Considering that our family’s safety was at risk, and because we depend on my husband’s car to get him to and from work (as well as to help mama with drop off and pick up from school), covering this expense was necessary.⁣
⁣
We ended up transferring money from another budget category to cover the expense, and at first I was really bummed out. $600 is alot of money. Then I remembered, that I have the option to fix it, or not. Do I want to keep my family safe? Can I shuffle some money around to make this happen? Yes, and yes. ⁣
⁣
Gratitude is something that I want to constantly keep in mind, all-year-long, even if it’s being able to pay $600 to repair my husband’s car.⁣

Let’s talk about the cost of a curated instagram bathroom shot. This is a picture of one of my favorite bathrooms we had remodeled, our powder room. ⁣

Budgeting is a very personal thing. We saved up for many big-ticket items because they meant a lot to us (our fridge, oven, and accordion window/doors), and we saved money by spending less on other items. If you budgeted for an expensive mirror, because it’s the one you dreamed of, that’s your choice. You gave yourself the permission to spend money on it when you budgeted for it!⁣

When we were remodeling and decorating, I spent HOURS looking for ways to save money. Now that my son will be starting kindergarten, I feel like I need to be especially mindful of our family calendar, and how we manage our time.⁣
⁣
Celeste, the creator of the wall calendar that we use, has put her heart into creating something beautiful and functional for anyone that needs to keep track of their monthly events.⁣
⁣
To stay organized, I’ve assigned each member of the family a color on the calendar, and I use certain colors for activities that involve all of us, and just the kids and I.⁣
⁣
I’ve also decided to keep scheduling certain days of the week as “nothing” days. These are days that are off limits and we say no to commitments that arise so that we can have family time. Being married to a fireman makes an awesome schedule. With his schedule, it’s important that I'm intentional about not scheduling away all of the time he has off, because I’m the family’s chief scheduling officer.⁣

What I realized when we were paying off our debt, is that there is lots of freedom in saying no. I’ve heard it said that when you say “no” to something, you are actually saying “yes” to something else.⁣

The kitchen is my favorite room in our home, and it currently doesn’t look as tidy as it did for this photo. We have been getting alot of use out of the accordion windows and doors with this summer weather. Since we don’t have A.C., it’s nice to get a cross-breeze by keeping the windows and doors open, and the dutch door half-way open. At this point, A.C. isn’t an item on our list of “things to save for” because we are fine without it, and it could potentially incur lots of extra monthly expenses.

Another thing I’m thankful for: tile that looks like wood!!! It’s cool (literally), and easy to clean!!

There are so many projects that can be done on a budget. I believe that you can live well on a budget, in order to do that, one must be resourceful and creative.

My husband took on the organizational task of organizing our spices several months ago. He spent less than $50 building this spice rack behind our pantry door. It took some time, and we were willing to trade that in order to achieve the result we wanted without having to spend lots more hiring someone else to do this.

On the other hand, within the next year, we will be hiring someone to grade our backyard and install a proper drainage system. This task is not a strength of mine, or my husband’s, so we will happily interview several landscape specialists, and budget for this project.

With most DIY projects nowadays, you can google or youtube how to do them, and have success doing DIY projects with the proper resources.

My favorite DIY is the Pottery Barn look-a-like daybed that my husband made in our playroom! It’s beautiful!

We were fortunate to be able to live with my mom for the 4 months our home was undergoing renovation. Not having a kitchen, and having lots of dust in every room because we were painting, removing walls, and replacing floors throughout the entire home made an easy decision to move out.

Even though we moved out of our home, it was still very stressful. Our contractor moved fast, and we had to make lots of decisions that we hadn’t anticipated, quickly. I can’t imagine what the process would have been like if we hadn’t started looking at appliances, bathroom fixtures, tile, and sconces one year before we started renovation.

The great thing about planning so far in advance was that we were able to buy lots of things on sale, and have time to make the best decision on big ticket items like our accordion windows & doors, fridge, and oven.

Having our “Remodel” budget was such a lifesaver. Stoked that @youneedabudget created a program that’s versatile; we used it for the remodel, for our monthly budgeting, and for my blogging budget! I love it so much!

When we were budgeting for our home renovation, we created a new budget, and separated it by each room. We created subcategories for each room for all of the expenditures: labor costs, vanity, bathroom fixtures, tile, sconces, grout, mirror, etc. This helped us to stay on budget. Having an “unforeseen” renovation budget category also helped us stay on track because there were quite a few things that came up, that we forgot, or didn’t know about. I can see how it would feel very overwhelming, and out of control without a clear financial plan for a renovation.

We waited a while before repairing the beam on our garage because it is such a big expense, and because we didn’t want to use too much of our emergency fund. Cracked, load-bearing beam is definitely a reason to dip into the emergency fund! Have you had to use your emergency fund?

This pizza was a variation of @sk_cookingclub Emerald Pizza, kid edition. Can’t take any of the credit, as Sara came over, and helped me make it! Thanks girl! One of the biggest ways we save money on groceries is by having a meal plan, and sticking to it. I’m so thankful for @skcookingclub as it has made the planning phase of the meals so easy. I feel confident knowing that a professional cook has made, and tested these recipes so that they are delicious and nutritious for my family. Other favorite cookbooks for meal planning that I use include: The Sprouted Kitchen cookbooks, Magnolia Table Cookbook, Cravings by Chrissy Teigan, and most recently “5 Ingredients: Quick and Easy Food,” by Jamie Oliver. In all seriousness, budgeting was hard the first few months. My husband and I were learning how to use a totally new system of managing our finances; we were making financial decisions about how we spent every single dollar, and we had to navigate how to “roll with the punches” that came up those first few months. My advice is: don’t be discouraged! Keep trying until you get it right, and give yourself extra grace during this time! I have a new article on the blog with over 100 budget categories that we use for our own budget! It’s loooooooooooooooooooooong, so find a time when you can settle in, maybe some coffee, hot cocoa, or wine, and check it out if you want to geek out on budgeting!

Looking back at our home remodel experience, it was the culmination of more than 8 years worth of work, and planning our finances. It’s easy for me to look around on Instagram and get caught up with “how does everyone afford all of this stuff”, the reality is that 1. It’s truly none of my business, and 2. It doesn’t matter…….as Brene Brown said “Stay in your lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy.” When those thoughts start to creep up, I quickly make myself shift to gratitude. There is a random quote I found on pinterest (if anyone knows, please tell me so I can tag the source) that says “In a heart filled with gratitude there is no room for discontentment.”

A couple of choices we made in the kitchen that I’m very happy about:
1. The color of the kitchen. We went with Super White by @benjaminmoore in the entire main living area downstairs, including the kitchen. It brightens up the space so much. We saved money on the paint by having Dunn Edwards color match the paint for us.
2. We went with a Quartz countertop! It has held up very well thus far, and it was our most budget friendly choice that had the look we were going for.
3. Maximizing the storage in our island. The island measures roughly 6 x 11 feet. We lost almost all of our uppers, and to mitigate that, we needed to make the island accessible from all sides with lots of space to store our kitchen accessories. I would have loved to have an island that had tile on one side, but this was not in the cards for what we needed.

Every morning right after I get breakfast squared away, I pack the kids lunches so we can go off and adventure together. I have been digging pesto mayo ever since Sara, @sproutedkitchen , mentioned it to me. I usually do something fun in the smallest compartment (cheez-its, @annies, etc), trail mix, some kind of fruit, and some kind of vegetable. The main dish is usually some form of sandwich or burrito. These @bentgo lunch boxes are my favorite so far. I’m thinking I might need something a little bigger once my son starts in the fall. Anyone have any suggestions?

I had purchased the original pulls from this bathroom online, and they were nothing how I imagined. They were bigger, bulkier, and didn’t quite fit what I had in mind for this bathroom. I returned them, and hastily ran to a local home improvement store, and found these pulls, which were exactly what I had in mind, and they were only $5 each!!!!! Total win!

When we were planning the remodel of this bathroom, we decided not to move the plumbing, because it wasn’t cost-effective, and because everything was functional in it’s original space. We set out to make the bathroom feel bigger, brighter, and fresh! Swipe to see the before of this bathroom!

I went to @target several weeks ago, and really enjoyed some of their classic pieces they had in stock. I’m all about buying classic pieces that can be worn over, and over, and over again without looking off trend too quickly. This sweater was only $24.99! I also saw a really cute @fawndesign look alike fanny pack that’s only $19.99. I’m gonna take a second here, and just acknowledge how much I love that fanny packs are in! They are so incredibly functional…..I LOVE being hands free when I’m with my kids!!!

When I am spending money, my budget is ALWAYS on my mind. Thankfully, if I am ever unsure of how much I have to spend in a category, all I need to do is pull up @youneedabudget app on my phone, and see how much money is left in that particular category. This weekend we spent money in at least 4 categories: His Fun money (purchased a mountain bike for my husband), Her Fun money (coffee), Groceries (we went and picked fresh strawberries at @theecologycenter), and Potluck/Serving other’s with food (picked up potato wedges for a potluck at church).

I’ve recently started thinking about doing cash envelopes for a few categories. We used to do cash envelopes, but I lost them twice!!! Thankfully people turned them in both times, and I received them totally intact twice. I’m thinking it would be helpful for My "Fun Money” to carry cash, because I might be less likely to spend the money if it’s more tangible, and in my hands when I want to spend it.

Going to hop on stories later today to talk about another budget category. I’m finishing up my budgeting categories post which will hopefully help those of you who budget, or who are interested in starting a budget.

We loved shopping at @flooranddecor for most of our bathroom tile! They have very reasonable prices, and you can order online! I’m glad we went with subway tiles, and black grout in our showers, as it looks clean all the time. We do make it a point to get the water spots off after every time we shower with a squeegee, otherwise the water spots would take over!

Colin Powell once said “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.” There is nothing accidental about becoming debt free. It takes lots of planning, deliberate decisions, and lots of hard work. No matter how long it takes to complete the debt-free journey, I promise it will be worth it! The process forever changed me and gave me a completely different outlook on life that I’m thankful for. If people think you are crazy for working hard and trying to become debt-free, let them...no one will want this more than you, and if you get too caught up in what others are thinking, you will never get anything done.

It’s the end of the month which means for me that it’s time to write out the next month on my favorite calendar! Some things I do to keep myself and my family organized:

*Color code days that I’m working, my husband is working, and different activities for the kids.
*Look at appointments that need to be made, or things that need to be done and schedule them (ie, finish cleaning out and going through all my clothes).
*Schedule date nights, and fun family time (bonfire, going to a museum, and a one-on-one date with one child…..we try to alternate every other month)
*Take inventory of the fridge, and pantry, and make sure that I have the basic “staples” for the next month.
*Do a quick inventory of clothes, or things that we are no longer using, and put them up for sale. (I try to sell at least 6 things a month)

What kinds of things do you do to keep your family organized? Side note: If you are thinking of what to ask for Mother’s Day, this calendar is a good one ;)

It’s so important to get on a budget if you want to change your financial trajectory! @daveramsey is right! There needs to be an intentional, written plan, about where your money will go, otherwise it can slip through your fingers without a trace! And remember, it doesn’t have to be “boring” or “restricting”. On the contrary, you figure out what goals are important to you, and give yourself the permission to spend on what matters!

The neat thing is that there are so many different resources out there on budgeting: @youneedabudget (what we have used for the past 7 years, well worth the annual fee), or @mintapp , or if you are into written budgets, @thebudgetmom is coming out with a workbook, and @pennypinchinmom also has some great printables as well!

It’s starting to warm up in Socal! Hooray!!!!! When it gets got, I would prefer not to cook, and to instead use the Crockpot or Instapot. Anyone else? I’m an instapot newbie, anyone have any good instagram accounts or blogs to go to for Instapot recipes? Trying to stay on track with the menu plan for the next few months as it gets warmer.

I was at work yesterday writing that it was Tuesday in all of my patient’s rooms ….when I finally figured out it was Sunday, I was so embarassed!!! Dis anyone do anything fun for St. Patrick’s day?

Sometimes, less is more! I made most of the design decisions when we were renovating our house, so when my husband said he wanted to buy this guitar hook for our room, I said “yessssssss.” The guitar hook wasn’t the most budget-friendly, coming in at $70, but we had money in our home decor fund, and I think that beautiful handmade items that require lots of craftsmanship are well worth it. This guitar hook is by @one_forty_three !
