Try this test to see if you might have DeQuervain’s.

✨Before we explain it, don’t forget to SAVE this for later/SHARE this with another/FOLLOW us for more tips and education on DeQuervain’s!✨

It’s called the Finkelstein test:

-Place the thumb of the injured side into the palm (again of the injured side). -Wrap the other four fingers around the thumb (that is placed in the palm).
-Then move the pinky side of your hand towards the pinky side of your wrist (by bending at the wrist).

If you are experiencing more than discomfort (like a pain/sharp pain or a feeling like something might snap) where the thumb and wrist meet, then you could possibly have DeQuervain’s.

What is DeQuervains?!

DeQuervain’s is a condition where the tendons of your thumb are not gliding as smoothly as possible whenever you move your thumb or wrist.

There are changes to the tendon sheath, which covers your tendons, and to the tendons themselves. It is often due to poor use of the hand and wrist. You’ll often feel a sharp pain with use of the hand, gripping, pinching and doing everyday activities. It might even feel like something is about to snap or tear!

a. Opening and closing your hand and/or gripping.
b. Moving your hand side to side.
c. Moving your thumb away from the rest of the hand.
d. Pinching.

However, it’s these movements in addition to doing them significantly throughout your days/weeks/months/years AND with poor mechanics.

It is important, however, that we are aware of what may put us at risk! So pay attention throughout your day!

We’ve been talking about the importance of core strengthening for keeping your hand, wrist, arm, (and shoulder) safe from injury! (See previous posts).

So make sure to start with these!

You can even do them if your pain is still high and uncontrolled.

The main thing is to make sure that if you do add weights to these exercises, make sure to not use weights that you have to grip! That will put extra stress on your healing body parts!

This vertical mouse is ergonomically better for decreasing and preventing hand/wrist/forearm/shoulder pain than traditional ones because it keeps your hand to your shoulder in a neutral position.

And the neutral position is the best position because it is the most rested position for your body.

The other day I had a conversation with an individual who couldn’t be convinced that doing activities repeatedly could lead to injury because, as this person said, “Our bodies are meant to move.”

And that’s true. However, we are not machines therefore we are not meant to do the same movement over and over and over again without damage (even a machine would eventually break down).

Also, like I mentioned, doing these movements to an excessive amount can leave you VULNERABLE to DeQuervain’s but it does NOT guarantees you will get it.

It is important, however, that we are aware of what may put us at risk! So pay attention throughout your day!

What is a TFCC injury?

TFCC stands for triangular fibrocartilage complex.

A lot of words for a spot so small on our body!

However, the TFC is very important in providing stability and mobility to the wrist!

So when it is injured, it can cause not only a lot of problems with wrist use but PAIN also.

What is lateral epicondylitis?!

Lateral epicondylitis is another tendon injury again due to poor use of the hand, wrist and forearm.

Typically, it is a condition that builds up overtime and then eventually, *bam*, your arm, and elbow are yelling at you!

The pain is felt usually around the elbow and with activities where you have to grip repeatedly or with exertion.

We’ve been talking about the importance of core strengthening for keeping your hand, wrist, arm, (and shoulder) safe from injury! (See previous posts).

So make sure to start with these!

You can even do them if your pain is still high and uncontrolled.

The main thing is to make sure that if you do add weights to these exercises, make sure to not use weights that you have to grip! That will put extra stress on your healing body parts!

It’s more than just a massage!

Even though soft tissue work feels great (and sometimes it does not!), it is beneficial in many more ways!

Soft tissue work:

Helps decrease tightness in muscles.
Helps decrease tightness in the fascia.
Helps improve circulation.
Helps decrease swelling.
Helps break down scar tissue/adhesions.

All of this helps to DECREASE PAIN AND HELP THE HAND/THUMB/WRIST TO HEAL!

So make sure you are incorporating it into your management program!

By the way, soft tissue work (or massage) is just one part of a therapeutic management program.

Always watch…

The alignment of your hands and forearm when you are doing your everyday tasks!

Keeping your hands and forearm in a straight line as much as possible when doing your everyday tasks makes sure we take strain off the tendons/bones involved in lateral epicondylitis!

Now I know for some tasks/activities in our day that is challenging, but there are still ways to solve it (e.g. ergonomic equipment).

So watch that alignment!

These exercises are an important part of recovering from your DeQuervain’s!

✨First, don’t forget to SAVE this for later/SHARE this with another/FOLLOW us for more tips! ✨

They are called ACTIVE RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES!

When we hurt, we don’t want to move that body part because we fear it will hurt more.

And true, we need to rest the injury, but if we completely not move the injured body part then we can end up with more stiffness AND THAT CAN LEAD TO MORE PAIN!

Not to mention additional problems that make it even harder to decrease our pain and heal down the road!

So make sure you are incorporating these exercises, but do them gently and to your tolerance!

1. Thumb slides: With the injured hand, bring your thumb to your pinky finger and slide down the pinky finger to where you can.

2. Wrist circles: Make big wrist circles (to your tolerance) in one direction 10 times. Now go in the other direction 10 times. Do 3 times per day.

3. Forearm supination and pronation: Start by having your arm by your side and bending your elbow to 90 degrees. Then rotate your palm up (while keeping your elbow by your side). Then rotate your palm down.

Now a lot of us have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome,

But do you know what is actually happening?

In carpal tunnel syndrome, there is nerve compression.

Specifically, the median nerve is being compressed.

The median nerve is in charge of a lot of things in your hand including how it feels and how it functions.

So when you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you can feel numbness and tingling in your fingers (to be specific, with the thumb, the index finger, the middle finger and part of your ring finger)

And you can feel weakness and clumsiness in your hand.

It’s important to get help for it as soon as possible because these problems, with time, can become permanent.
